Gluten-Free Lanzarote: Where Coeliacs Can Eat, Resort by Resort (2026)

Gluten-free island guide · the places worth planning around

Gluten-Free Lanzarote

An evidence-led guide to eating gluten-free across Lanzarote, resort by resort. Naturally gluten-free Canarian ground helps here: papas arrugadas (wrinkly salt-baked potatoes) with mojo sauce, and fresh-caught fish, are gluten-free by tradition. One flag: gofio, the beloved toasted-grain flour stirred into everything from soup to dessert, is usually wheat. Never assume it’s gluten-free without asking.

Lanzarote now has one dedicated (★) gluten-free kitchen in our Atlas: Vive Libre, a small bistro in Puerto del Carmen. The other 19 places serve gluten-free on a mixed menu, and each earns its listing on evidence (a marked menu, a separate fryer, a specific practice).

How to read this guide

We publish evidence, not vibes. Every card carries the rating we give it, the venue’s own described handling, a street address from our records, and how we know it, with the date. The ★ is set by How to Gluten Free from the venue’s own published words, and a community report never earns it on its own.

★ DedicatedA kitchen with no gluten in it, as the Atlas holds it. On Lanzarote: Vive Libre.
GF-servingA gluten-free option on a mixed menu: every other place in this guide.
Visited / Own website / ListedEach place says how we know it. “Visited by us”: someone from HTGF was there in the month shown (a visit, not a lab test). “Checked on its own website”: we read the venue’s own gluten-free wording in the month shown. “Listed by” and the name of a coeliac association (AIC, Coeliac UK and others): that association lists the place. “Listed by a directory”: a gluten-free directory lists it and we have not read it at the source yet.
01 · PUERTO DEL CARMEN

Puerto del Carmen

The island’s biggest resort strip carries the deepest bench of gluten-free-aware kitchens on Lanzarote: several with a genuinely separate fryer, not just a marked menu. A short detour inland to Puerto Calero adds one more.

01

Vive Libre

★ Dedicated

A small gluten-free bistro in Puerto del Carmen, and the first kitchen on Lanzarote we mark ★: its own page says “no gluten is permitted on the premises”.

The gluten-free angle

It calls itself “a gluten free bistro” and writes about “our 100% gluten free kitchen”. Open Thursday to Monday from 11 am, last entry 6 pm, closed Tuesday and Wednesday; cash only, no bookings (its own page, October 2026).

Order

Anything on the menu; ask about the day’s specials.

Restaurante Mumbai Masala

GF-serving

A GF-marked menu and a dedicated fryer, plus GF beer: a short detour from Puerto del Carmen worth the drive for the fryer alone.

The gluten-free angle

This branch’s dedicated fryer is the strongest single claim in this chapter.

02 · PLAYA BLANCA

Playa Blanca

The newest resort strip, built around the Marina Rubicón and the CC Papagayo mall: several dedicated-fryer claims here, plus one clear watch-out. A 20-minute drive out to El Golfo, on the wild west coast, adds two of the island’s strongest single claims.

08

The Codfather

GF-serving

GF batter advertised on the menu and a separate fryer; the owners know coeliac disease and specifically warn that the malt-vinegar sachets on the tables are not gluten-free.

The gluten-free angle

Ask for a fresh, unopened vinegar sachet or skip vinegar altogether: the sachets on the table are shared stock.

Order

GF-battered fish and chips, own vinegar.

GF-serving

GF pizza and pasta are available, but made in the SAME kitchen with no separate preparation area.

The gluten-free angle

This is a place to ask hard questions, not assume.

Order

If you order here, ask exactly how the GF dish is kept apart before you commit.

Watch out

Same kitchen, no separate area: the venue itself says it cannot guarantee zero cross-contact. Ask in detail before ordering; this is not a low-risk pick.

13

04 · ARRECIFE · THE REAL CAPITAL

Arrecife · the real capital

Most visitors never leave the resorts, but Arrecife is where locals actually eat: cheaper, less touristy, and home to the single strongest claim we hold for the island.

16

Perla Negra

GF-serving

Most dishes are gluten-free or adaptable, GF beer is stocked, and staff are described as knowledgeable: the strongest single claim we hold for the capital.

The gluten-free angle

Its own website is live and current: check the day’s menu before you go.

05 · THE NORTH LOOP · TEGUISE, HARÍA, LA GRACIOSA

The north loop · Teguise, Haría, La Graciosa

Lanzarote’s quietest, most dramatic corner: the old capital, the volcano country of César Manrique, and the sister island of La Graciosa offshore. This is also where the island’s one ‘almost-★’ story lives: read it below.

18

Esquina Teguise

GF-serving

A wonderful 100% plant-based kitchen where most dishes, including the GF bread and cakes, are gluten-free. It is not, however, a dedicated gluten-free kitchen: we found it still handles wheat, so we list it as a place with gluten-free options.

The gluten-free angle

We checked it harder than any other place here; it doesn’t earn the ★, but it’s still one of our favourite stops.

Order

Ask what today’s GF dishes are; the GF bread and cakes are a good place to start.

La Graciosa. We don’t yet hold a single independently checked gluten-free listing for La Graciosa itself: a small restaurant in Caleta del Sebo appears on one local directory, but we haven’t been able to verify it beyond that. If you find something there, tell us: hello@howtoglutenfree.com.

06 · Plan your trip

Plan your trip

Where to base yourself

  • Puerto del Carmen: the biggest resort, the deepest restaurant list, the strongest cluster of separate-fryer claims, and the island’s only ★ kitchen.
  • Playa Blanca: newer, marina-facing, family-friendly, with easy access to the wild west coast around El Golfo.
  • Costa Teguise: quieter and more residential, good for families and kitesurfers, a shorter list.
  • Arrecife · the real, working capital: cheaper, less touristy, home to our single strongest claim on the island.
  • The north (Teguise, Haría): day-trip country and a good lunch stop, not really a resort base.

A car is close to essential outside the resort strips: Lanzarote’s gluten-free-aware kitchens are spread across the whole island, not clustered around one bus route. Supermarkets (Hiperdino, Spar) stock a reasonable own-brand gluten-free range, and most pharmacies (farmacias) carry certified basics if you run out.

Gluten-free-aware stays

All ○ (gluten-free-aware), never a ★: always confirm on booking.

  • ○ Sandos Papagayo Beach Resort · Playa Blanca (Yaiza) · C. las Acacias 6, 35580 Playa BlancaOn our list as a hotel; ask about gluten-free breakfast when you book.
  • ○ HIPOTELS Natura Palace · Playa Blanca (Yaiza) · (confirm the street address when you book)a stay in our Atlas, but we hold no gluten-free specifics on it yet: confirm everything on booking.
  • ○ Hotel Costa Calero · Puerto Calero (Yaiza) · (confirm the street address when you book)a stay in our Atlas, but we hold no gluten-free specifics on it yet: confirm everything on booking.
  • ○ AEQUORA Lanzarote Suites · Puerto del Carmen (Tías) · (confirm the street address when you book)a stay in our Atlas, but we hold no gluten-free specifics on it yet: confirm everything on booking.

Along Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca you’ll also find several large chain resorts. Their gluten-free handling is usually a chain-level claim rather than something checked hotel by hotel, so ask before you book, and again at check-in.

The one sentence to say

Say it before ordering, every time: dedicated kitchen or not.

Soy celíaco/a. No puedo comer gluten, y también necesito evitar la contaminación cruzada de harina de trigo, pan, pasta, pizza, migas de pan y aceite de fritura compartido.

I’m coeliac. I can’t eat gluten, and I also need to avoid cross-contamination from wheat flour, bread, pasta, pizza, breadcrumbs and shared frying oil.

Two more worth asking: ¿Tienen menú sin gluten? (“Do you have a gluten-free menu?”) and Para los fritos, ¿tienen una freidora dedicada sin gluten? (“For fried food, do you have a dedicated gluten-free fryer?”) New to all this? Start with our gluten-free 101 and how cross-contact works.

Good to know

  • Many kitchens outside the big resort strips close Sunday and/or Monday: check before you drive out.
  • Menus are printed in Spanish first; English is near-universal in the resorts, less so inland and in Arrecife.
  • “Sin gluten” is the phrase to look for on a menu; it does not by itself mean a separate fryer or kitchen: always ask.
  • August is local fiesta season in several towns (Ye/Haría, Teguise): expect shifted hours.
