What is How to Gluten Free?
How to Gluten Free is a free guide and app for coeliacs and everyone who has to eat gluten-free for medical reasons. It brings four tools together: the HTGF Atlas for gluten-free places with their evidence, Compass for planning a trip (in beta), the Label Lab for reading food labels and ingredient lists, and Meal Lab, a week planner (in beta). Around them sit travel and city guides, translation cards for restaurants, and a live recall tracker for food recalls over undeclared gluten.
Who runs How to Gluten Free?
How to Gluten Free is Andreas Fulde’s project, run together with Ilaria, who has coeliac disease. We live between Kiel, Genoa and Naples, which is why the site is in German and Italian as well as English; our registered address is in Hannover. We are a coeliac household, not clinicians: we explain labels, kitchens and travel with a source and a date for every claim, and for medical questions we point you to your doctor or dietitian and to your national coeliac society.
What does How to Gluten Free cost?
The core of How to Gluten Free is free, always: looking up places in the HTGF Atlas with their tier and evidence, recall alerts, the curated country pages, translation cards on screen, and checking any label by pasting or typing it into the Label Lab.
What does HTGF+ add, and what does it cost?
HTGF+ is the optional membership behind the tools. A 3-day pass costs β¬2.49 and a 7-day pass β¬3.49, and neither renews; a year costs β¬24.99. HTGF+ adds unlimited trip boards in Compass, offline city packs in the Atlas app and unlimited Label Lab camera scans (your first scan is free), and the year membership can also be given to another coeliac.
What do β Dedicated, β Serves gluten-free and “Listed, not yet checked” mean?
β Dedicated means a 100% gluten-free place with no gluten on site, and the gold β comes only from evidence: the venue’s own published words, or a check by our team. β Serves gluten-free means a shared kitchen that offers gluten-free food, where the remaining cross-contact risk depends on how the kitchen handles it, so you tell them you have coeliac disease and ask on the day. “Listed, not yet checked” means the place is in the HTGF Atlas but we haven’t reviewed its evidence yet.
How does How to Gluten Free check a place?
Every listing in the HTGF Atlas starts from a source: the venue’s own published gluten-free information, an official register or accreditation, a report from our community, or our own research. Operating status, address and gluten-free protocol are checked against that source, and every listing shows when it was last verified. No listing without a source, no source without a date.
Can a restaurant pay for a better tier or a higher place?
No venue can buy a tier, the β or a listing on How to Gluten Free. Venues can pay for a member profile: on our free city guides, country pages and territory pages, places are grouped by tier first, and within a tier the ones with a member profile come first, marked Partner. The map, search and our paid guides have no partner order.
Do reviews change a place’s tier?
No. Reports from our community are welcome and can make us look at a place again, but a community report on its own never sets a tier or earns the β . Only reviewed evidence moves a place up a tier.
Where can I get the HTGF Atlas app?
The free HTGF Atlas app is available for iPhone on the App Store and for Android on Google Play.
How do I report a mistake or suggest a place?
Write to hello@howtoglutenfree.com if something on How to Gluten Free is wrong or out of date, or use Suggest a place on the site. Venues can list or claim their own entry for free; what a venue says about itself is shown as its own statement, never as our check.
