Coeliac groups and meet-ups: where to find your people

The short answer

Most countries with a coeliac association also have local groups: a monthly Stammtisch in Munich, a meet-up in Central London, family picnics in Graz. They’re the quickest way to hear where locals really eat and to meet people who don’t need the explanation. Below are the groups we checked, country by country, with how often they meet and a link to their own page.

Before you go

• Check the group’s own page first: dates and places change.
• Many groups meet at a restaurant. We don’t list those restaurants here, because we only name places we’ve checked ourselves. The group will tell you where.
• Some meetings are for members only, and we say so where the group does. Joining your national association is usually inexpensive and it keeps these groups going.
• Travelling? Write to the group before the date and ask whether visitors can join.

Is there a coeliac support group near me?

Start with your national association’s group finder, listed first under each country above. In Germany the DZG lists around 200 local groups, in the UK Coeliac UK has a postcode finder, and in the US the National Celiac Association lists its local and online groups.

What is a Zöliakie-Stammtisch?

A regular, informal get-together of people with coeliac disease, usually over a meal at a restaurant the group has arranged in advance. Swapping tips on where to eat and what to buy is the main point.

Do I have to be a member to join?

Often not, but some groups keep meetings for members. Where a group says so on its own page, we mark it.

Can I join as a visitor from abroad?

Ask the group first. A short message with your dates is the simplest way.
