The gluten-free Christmas market in the Black Forest: Sasbachwalden

The short answer

Sasbachwalden, in the Black Forest, holds one of the rarest things in coeliac travel: a Christmas market that its organiser runs as 100% gluten-free. It’s the one market where the things that are wheat everywhere else are the point, not the problem. In 2026 the 10th edition runs in the Kurpark over two Advent weekends, 27 to 29 November and 3 to 6 December, as the organiser prints it. We went in 2025, and it’s why the Black Forest leads our Christmas guide.

This season’s market

The Glutenfreier Weihnachtsmarkt Sasbachwalden, 10th edition, is in the Kurpark. Dates and opening hours for 2026, as the organiser prints them:

The organiser’s page describes around two dozen exhibitors, with food that is gluten-free and in part also lactose-free and vegan. It mentions children with coeliac disease specifically: they can decorate a gingerbread man, or recite a poem to St Nicholas for a present from his sack.

This is also the real market behind the winter rumour of a “gluten-free market on the Feldberg”. No organiser lists one there; the Black Forest’s 100% gluten-free market is Sasbachwalden, around 80 km north.

What a gluten-free market is like

At an ordinary market you spend the evening asking questions. Here the organiser’s rule does the first part of that work, so the things that are off-limits everywhere else can be back on the table. When we went in November 2025, we ate Strauben, the fried batter fritter that is wheat at every other market, from a stall with its own fryer. We also had a Bratwurst in a roll, Schupfnudeln and Kässpätzle.

Stalls change from year to year, so we name no individual stall, and what’s on sale in 2026 depends on this year’s exhibitors. The guarantee here is the market’s rule, not any one vendor’s protocol. If anything is unclear, ask the stall as you would anywhere.

Where to eat around the market

The market is organised by the Petermann family and run by the team of Gasthaus Bischenberg in Sasbachwalden. The organiser’s page says the Gasthaus serves a gluten-free breakfast buffet from 8:30 to 11:00 on both market weekends. The Gasthaus is not a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, so tell them you have coeliac disease and confirm on the day.

Sasbachwalden works as a day trip. We based ourselves in Freiburg, where the dedicated gluten-free places are. Gengenbach, the Advent-calendar town, makes a natural second Black Forest market on the same trip.
