Baden-Baden Christmas market, gluten-free: the Christkindelsmarkt and where to eat

UPDATED=2026-09-24READ=6 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

The short answer

Baden-Baden’s Christkindelsmarkt sits in the Kurgarten in front of the Kurhaus. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, a mulled wine, a coffee or a pure tea, and a plain grilled sausage taken off its roll once you’ve asked. Most baked and battered food is wheat. We walked this market ourselves in November 2025 and ate a gluten-free meal in town. For a fully gluten-free kitchen, base yourself in Freiburg.

New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market

This season’s market

The Baden-Badener Christkindelsmarkt is held in the Kurgarten in front of the Kurhaus, and entry is free. It’s run by the Christkindelsmarkt GbR. It runs from 26 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, as the organiser prints it. Opening hours are on the organiser’s page: baden-baden.com, Christmas market.

It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes: a market stall is a food business, and asking what’s in the food, and what else touches it, is your right.

What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t

Same tiers as anywhere, and no stall named. Roasted chestnuts, Glühwein, coffee and pure teas are reliably gluten-free by their nature, handling permitting. Glühwein is legally wine, sugar and spices, and the allergen duty applies even though the mug carries no ingredient list, so ask only about a ready spice or punch mix.

If you see Rote Wurst, the Baden grill sausage: by the German trade guidelines it’s pork, beef and fat, with no cereal in the definition. The guidelines don’t stop a maker adding a labelled binder, though, and the gluten you can see is the roll, the sauce and the shared grill. Ask what’s in the sausage and the marinade, ask what else goes on the grill, and take it on a plate without the roll.

Flammkuchen, Schupfnudeln, Strauben, Lebkuchen and Stollen are wheat. Roasted almonds, potato pancakes, fries and currywurst sauce are ask-first: the questions are what’s dusted on or mixed in, the shared fryer and the ready sauce, not the potato.

Where to eat gluten-free in Baden-Baden

We don’t have a fully dedicated gluten-free kitchen in Baden-Baden on our list, so we don’t claim one. What the town has is a handful of places that offer gluten-free options. Always tell them you have coeliac disease and confirm how they handle it on the day.

Gluten-free options, listed by a directory or Google, not yet checked by us

  • Rivazza, restaurant
  • ColleGelato, café
  • Patisserie by Anna, bakery

These are options, not dedicated kitchens. If you know a gluten-free-friendly kitchen in Baden-Baden we should look at, tell us. A reader’s tip is how this page grows.

Getting there and staying

Baden-Baden works well as a day trip from a base in Freiburg, where the region’s gluten-free dining is. If you’re doing the French markets, Strasbourg on the Alsace side is the other base. Check the connection for your date before you set off. It’s also a spa town people happily stay in, but we don’t yet have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a Baden-Baden stay, so we don’t name one here.

Combine it with Gengenbach and Offenburg, or with the Black Forest’s entirely gluten-free market at Sasbachwalden, the one to plan a day around.

FAQ

What can I eat at the Baden-Baden Christmas market if I’m coeliac?
The reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, a mulled wine, coffee or a pure tea, and a plain grilled sausage off its roll once you’ve asked. Is there a dedicated gluten-free restaurant in Baden-Baden?
Not on our list, so we don’t claim one. Three places offer gluten-free options: Rivazza, ColleGelato and Patisserie by Anna, listed but not yet checked by us. For a fully gluten-free kitchen, look to Freiburg.

Is the Baden Rote Wurst gluten-free?
By the trade guidelines the sausage has no cereal in its definition, but the roll is wheat and the grill is shared. Ask what’s in the sausage and the marinade, and take it on a plate without the roll.

Is Glühwein at the market gluten-free?
By EU definition Glühwein is wine, sugar and spices, with no gluten-containing ingredient. Ask only about a ready spice or punch mix; the allergen duty applies even though the drink carries no ingredient list.

Where should I base myself for gluten-free eating near Baden-Baden?
Freiburg, for the region’s gluten-free depth, or Strasbourg if you’re doing the French markets. Baden-Baden itself is an easy day trip.
