Gluten-free at the Basel Christmas market

UPDATED=2026-09-24READ=5 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

The short answer

The Basel Christmas market spreads across the city centre, with Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz at its heart and a food-and-drink square on Claraplatz. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts (Marroni), Glühwein in your mug, coffee or a pure tea. Lebkuchen, waffles and most baked stall food are wheat. Basel’s real strength is off the stalls: a dedicated gluten- and lactose-free bakery on Tellstrasse, plus a few places with gluten-free options.

New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market

This season’s market

The Basler Weihnachtsmarkt runs from 26 November to 23 December 2026. Opening hours, as the organiser prints them: Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz daily 11:00 to 20:30 (on 23 December Barfüsserplatz closes at 20:00 and Münsterplatz at 18:00). The Märchenwald, the children’s fairy-tale forest on Münsterplatz, opens Monday to Friday 13:30 to 19:00 and Saturday to Sunday 11:00 to 19:00, from 26 November to 22 December. Claraplatz is the food and drink square. Official page: bs.ch, Basler Weihnachtsmarkt.

It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes.

What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t

Same tiers as any German-speaking market, and no stall named. Roasted chestnuts, Glühwein in your mug, and coffee or a pure tea are reliably gluten-free by their nature, handling permitting. Roasted almonds (gebrannte Mandeln) are ask-first: is it just sugar, almonds and cinnamon, or is something dusted on after roasting, and are they sitting open beside the Lebkuchen? Lebkuchen is a wheat- or starch-based bake, even in its almond-rich forms, which sit on a wafer. Waffles and crêpes need their own labelled flour and a clean iron to be genuinely gluten-free, and most stall versions aren’t.

Sausages follow Swiss labelling here. The Swiss coeliac society, IG Zöliakie, notes that wheat or barley in a spice blend must be named in brackets on the label, so “Gewürze” (spices) on its own means nothing gluten-containing was declared in it. Ask anyway, and take the sausage off its bread, on a plate. On Swiss labels and menus, flour is often named by its grade rather than its grain: Weissmehl, Halbweissmehl, Ruchmehl and Zopfmehl are all wheat flours.

The three questions to ask a stall

Where to eat gluten-free in Basel

Except at the dedicated bakery, always tell them you have coeliac disease and confirm how they handle it on the day.

★ Dedicated gluten-free

  • Glutenfreie Köstlichkeiten, bakery and café, Tellstrasse 7, 4053 Basel. A gluten- and lactose-free bakery by its own description. Bread orders go in by 11:00 the day before, and cakes need 4 to 5 working days. It’s closed on Sundays and Mondays. There’s a second shop in nearby Riehen, Äussere Baselstrasse 255, with shorter hours. Checked against its own site, 24 September 2026.

Getting there and staying

Basel’s airport is the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, shared with France and Germany, so Basel pairs naturally with an Alsace or Black Forest leg of the same trip, Mulhouse in particular. We don’t yet have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a Basel stay, so we don’t name one here.

FAQ

By recipe, Glühwein is wine, sugar and spices. Ask about a ready spice mix before you assume.

Yes. Glutenfreie Köstlichkeiten on Tellstrasse is a gluten- and lactose-free bakery and café, checked against its own site. It has a second shop in nearby Riehen.
