The Gengenbacher Adventsmarkt is held on the Historischer Marktplatz, around the Advent calendar, and is run by the Gengenbacher Adventskalenderverein. This year’s dates and opening hours are on the organiser’s page: stadt-gengenbach.de. The schedule for the Advent calendar windows is on the tourist office page: gengenbach.info. The windows are lit in the evening, so time your visit for dusk.

Offenburg, close by, has its own Christmas market on its Marktplatz. The town posts its dates at innenstadt-offenburg.de; check there for this year’s.

Both are mixed markets, not gluten-free ones, so treat them the way the hub describes: asking what’s in the food, and what else touches it, is your right.

What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t

Same tiers as anywhere, and no stall named. Roasted chestnuts, Glühwein, coffee and pure teas are gluten-free by their nature, handling permitting. A plain grilled sausage, such as a Rote Wurst, taken off its roll is the reasonable savoury order: German trade guidelines define it by its meat and fat, with no cereal in the definition, but the roll, the marinade and the shared grill are the questions to ask. Flammkuchen and Schupfnudeln, if you see them, are usually made with wheat dough, and Strauben are a wheat batter at an ordinary market.
