The mochi itself usually is. Mochi is made from glutinous (sticky) rice. “Glutinous” describes the sticky texture; the rice contains no gluten.

What to check

  • Dusting: most mochi is dusted with potato or corn starch, but some ready-made mochi contains wheat flour or wheat starch. Read the label; in Japan look for ๅฐ้บฆ (wheat).
  • Fillings: sweet bean paste is usually fine; fillings with biscuit, cookie or cake pieces aren’t.
  • Mochi ice cream: check the ice cream flavour and any coating.
  • Savoury mochi dishes are often brushed with soy sauce, which usually contains wheat.
