Gluten-Free Verona: pastry, gelato, seafood and pizza for coeliacs

Gluten-free city guide Β· the places worth planning around

Gluten-Free Verona

This guide to gluten-free Verona lists 9 places: 2 marked β€œβ˜… Dedicated”, 1 marked β€œGF-serving Β· written protocol” and 6 marked β€œGF-serving”. Every card gives the street address, what to order and how we know it: 7 checked on their own website and 2 listed by a directory (not yet checked by us); the guide was last updated in October 2026. Say you have coeliac disease every time you order, at a β˜… place too.

Verona is the city of the Arena, Juliet’s balcony and pandoro, and pandoro is wheat. So are the gnocchi and the bigoli pasta. Risotto (here often made with Amarone) and polenta are gluten-free at the base; ask about the stock and any flour. The city has a small but real gluten-free bench: a seafood restaurant where the whole menu is gluten-free, a pastry shop that is gluten-free by name, and pizzerias in the Italian coeliac association’s network, one of them facing the Arena.

This is a short list on purpose: 9 places whose own website or page we read on 28 September 2026, each quoted in its own words. Two describe themselves as entirely gluten-free; the rest are mixed kitchens, a pastry shop and gelaterias with a clear gluten-free line. Everything else we track in Verona is on the live map, one link down.

How to read this guide

We publish evidence, not vibes. Every card carries the venue’s own words about how it handles gluten, a street address, and the date we last checked it. The β˜… is set by How to Gluten Free from the venue’s own published words, and a community report never earns it. Our four promises are public at howtoglutenfree.com/what-we-promise.

β˜… DedicatedA bakery, kitchen or shop with no gluten in it, in its own published words.
GF-serving Β· written protocolA kitchen that also cooks with wheat and describes its gluten-free handling in writing.
AIC networkThe venue’s own site or page states an AIC link: staff trained by the Italian coeliac association. Never a reason to skip the sentence.
AIC Β· AFC accreditedThe venue’s own site claims AIC’s Alimentazione Fuori Casa (AFC) accreditation, the association’s formal eating-out programme.
Visited / Own website / ListedEach place says how we know it. β€œVisited by us”: someone from HTGF was there in the month shown (a visit, not a lab test). β€œChecked on its own website”: we read the venue’s own gluten-free wording in the month shown. β€œListed by” and the name of a coeliac association (AIC, Coeliac UK and others): that association lists the place. β€œListed by a directory”: a gluten-free directory lists it and we have not read it at the source yet.
Before you go

Verona on foot, gluten-free

Verona’s centre is compact, and most of the places on this page are inside it. La Costa in Bra is on Piazza Bra, facing the Arena; Gelato Crea is on Via Roma, between Piazza Bra and Castelvecchio; Vittoria 1938 is on Via Diaz and Corte Farina on Via Farina, both a short walk from the Arena; and Osteria Il Bertoldo is in a lane of the old town, about 5 minutes on foot from Piazza delle Erbe and the Duomo, by our estimate. The two entirely gluten-free places sit just outside that core: Dolci Sogni Gluten Free on Stradone Porta Palio, south-west of the centre and about 15 minutes on foot from Piazza Bra, and L’Amico Mio across the river in Veronetta, about 10 minutes on foot from Juliet’s House by our estimate. Pasticceria Roma, in the south of the city, and Quattrocento, out in Valpantena, are a bus or taxi ride away. The centre itself is easy on foot: from the Arena, Castelvecchio and Piazza delle Erbe are each about 10 minutes away, and the Duomo, Ponte Pietra and San Zeno about 15 to 20, all on foot and by our estimate. Porta Nuova station, where the airport bus arrives, is about 25 minutes on foot from the Arena, by our estimate.

A day that works (not a Monday, when the Arena and Castelvecchio are closed): start at Dolci Sogni Gluten Free, an entirely gluten-free pastry shop that carries it in its name, with whatever sweet pastry is in the counter that day; message first to check the hours and the day’s range, as its card says. Castelvecchio and its museum are about 5 minutes on foot from there, by our estimate. Walk back along Via Roma to Piazza Bra and the Arena, with a stop at Gelato Crea, where all the flavours are gluten-free in its own words (take a cup unless the cones are confirmed). Lunch is the gluten-free sourdough pizza at La Costa in Bra, facing the Arena: a mixed kitchen that says it has been in the Italian coeliac association’s network since 2014. In the afternoon, see Piazza delle Erbe, the Torre dei Lamberti and Juliet’s House at the time you booked, then cross the river to the Giardino Giusti. Dinner is at L’Amico Mio in Veronetta, about 10 minutes on foot from the garden by our estimate, where the whole menu is gluten-free, fried seafood included; check its opening days first, as it is a small place.

Across Italy, many places belong to the coeliac association’s eating-out programme, Alimentazione Fuori Casa (AFC). AIC calls them Β«informatiΒ», informed: staff trained on coeliac disease, AIC’s rules for preparing gluten-free food, a signed agreement, and an in-depth visit from AIC at least once a year. It is not a certificate, and joining is voluntary: plenty of kitchens serve gluten-free food outside it. In Veneto, trained AIC volunteers visit a place before it joins and keep checking it afterwards; the training ends with a practical test at the venue, and a place that completes it receives the AFC sticker for its window, so look for it at the door. AIC’s list of member places is for its members, but visitors can buy AIC Mobile Welcome, a 15-day version of the AIC Mobile app, also in English. AIC advises booking ahead so the kitchen can get ready. When you book, and every time you order, say you have coeliac disease: Β«Sono celiacoΒ» or Β«Sono celiacaΒ».

Verona’s own food is where the traps are. Pandoro, gnocchi and bigoli are wheat. Gluten-free pandoro exists at Christmas, but only from a gluten-free baker or with the label; Pasticceria Roma, a mixed pastry shop in the south of the city, makes a gluten-free panettone worth ordering ahead, so ask for it packed. Risotto, here often made with Amarone, and polenta are gluten-free at the base, but ask Β«Il brodo Γ¨ senza glutine, anche se usate il dado?Β» (is the stock gluten-free, even if you use a stock cube?) and whether flour went into the sauce. Every pizzeria on this page also makes wheat pizza, so ask Β«Come preparate la pizza senza glutine? Impasto, banco e forno sono separati?Β» (how do you make the gluten-free pizza? Are the dough, the work surface and the oven kept separate?). The one with a gluten-free zone of its own, with its own oven, mixer, counter and fridges in its own words, is Quattrocento, a bus or taxi ride out in Valpantena. At the gelato counter, take a cup, not a cone. For a day trip to Lake Garda, pharmacies (farmacie) carry gluten-free staples for a picnic.

05 Β· Getting around

Getting around

From the airport, around the city by bus, and what the station has. Fares change, so each line carries the date we read it.

From Verona airport (Villafranca)

  • Verona Airlink (ATV line 199) links the airport with Verona Porta Nuova station in 15 minutes, every day, every 20 minutes (every 40 minutes at Christmas and New Year). A ticket costs €7.00, valid 75 minutes from validation and also on Verona’s city buses. Buy it in the ATV Ticket Bus Verona app, at the machine in the Arrivals area, at Porta Nuova (the ATV ticket office in the bus station, the tobacconist in the station hall or the ATV machines), or on board with no surcharge, from the driver or by card. 06 Β· Gluten-free shopping

Gluten-free shopping

For a picnic on a Lake Garda day trip or a stocked hotel fridge.

Pharmacies and supermarkets

  • Pharmacies (farmacie): AIC says gluten-free products are found there, but we found no list of which pharmacies keep them on the shelf. If one hasn’t got them, ask whether it can order them for you; some pharmacies take bookings by phone or online for you to collect. Two questions to show: Β«Potete ordinarmi prodotti senza glutine?Β» (can you order gluten-free products for me?) and Β«Quando arrivano?Β» (when will they arrive?). The coeliac vouchers you may read about go only to people resident in Italy, so as a visitor you pay like any other customer.AIC and Farmacie Gluten Free, read 3 October 2026
  • Supermarkets and shops across Italy that sell labelled gluten-free products are on the shops map of our Atlas β†—.How to Gluten Free Atlas, 4 October 2026
  • Supermarket own ranges: Conad Β«AlimentumΒ», Despar Β«Despar Free FromΒ» (not every Free From product is gluten-free, so look for the ones marked senza glutine), Esselunga Β«Equilibrio Senza GlutineΒ» and Coop Β«Bene.Sì».Conad, Despar, Esselunga and Coop, read 29 September 2026
  • Central supermarkets: Eurospar at Via D. Manin 7 and Tuday Conad at Piazzetta Pescheria 3. Their pages don’t list gluten-free stock, so ask in store.Despar and Conad store pages, read 29 September 2026

What to look for

  • Β«Senza glutineΒ» on a label means no more than 20 mg/kg (EU rule). The crossed-grain symbol (Spiga Barrata) is AIC’s licensed mark on suitable products.AIC, read 29 September 2026
  • For cakes and sweet pastry, the entirely gluten-free pastry shop on this page (Dolci Sogni Gluten Free) beats any supermarket shelf. At Christmas, Pasticceria Roma, a mixed pastry shop, makes a gluten-free panettone to order: ask for it packed. This page

Stock varies from shop to shop. Check the label of every product, every time.

07 Β· Plan your trip

Plan your trip

Where to base yourself

  • The centre (Piazza Bra, Via Roma, Via Diaz, Via Farina, the old town lanes): La Costa in Bra, Gelato Crea, Vittoria 1938, Corte Farina and Il Bertoldo are all within a short walk, and Dolci Sogni on Stradone Porta Palio is about 15 minutes on foot from Piazza Bra (chapters 1 to 3).
  • Veronetta, across the river: L’Amico Mio, for a meal where everything is gluten-free (chapter 2).
  • Further out: Pasticceria Roma (south) and Quattrocento (Valpantena) are a bus or taxi ride away (chapters 1 and 3).

We haven’t checked a Verona hotel breakfast yet, so confirm the gluten-free breakfast when you book. Pharmacies (farmacie) carry gluten-free staples for a picnic or a day trip to Lake Garda.

The one sentence to say

Say it before ordering, every time, dedicated kitchen or not.

Sono celiaco/a. Non posso mangiare glutine e devo evitare anche la contaminazione con farina di grano, pane, pasta, pizza, briciole e olio di frittura condiviso.

I have coeliac disease. I cannot eat gluten, and I also need to avoid cross-contact with wheat flour, bread, pasta, pizza, crumbs and shared frying oil.

Get the full Italian dining card with the follow-up questions β†’

Two follow-ups that help in Verona. At a pizzeria: Come preparate la pizza senza glutine? Impasto, banco e forno sono separati? (β€œHow do you make the gluten-free pizza? Are the dough, the work surface and the oven kept separate?”). For risotto: Il brodo Γ¨ senza glutine, anche se usate il dado? (β€œIs the stock gluten-free, even if you use a stock cube?”)

Good to know

  • β€œSenza glutine” means 20 mg/kg (20 ppm) or less, the EU and Codex threshold. A label that says it, means it.
  • Pandoro, gnocchi and bigoli contain wheat. Gluten-free pandoro exists at Christmas, but only from a gluten-free baker or with the label.
  • Risotto and polenta are gluten-free at the base. Ask whether the stock comes from a cube and whether flour went into the sauce.
  • An AIC link is a strong signal in a mixed kitchen, not a guarantee. It means the staff have been trained by the Italian coeliac association. Say the sentence anyway.

08 Β· Questions

Eating gluten-free in Verona: common questions

Where can I eat gluten-free in Verona?

The cards are grouped in 3 chapters, β€œPastry & gelato”, β€œLunch & dinner” and β€œPizza”. Each card gives the address, what to order and how we know it. Before you go, check the opening hours, and say you have coeliac disease when you order.

Are there fully gluten-free places in Verona?

In this Verona guide, 2 places are marked β€œβ˜… Dedicated”: Dolci Sogni Gluten Free and L’Amico Mio. Each β˜… card says how we know it and when; still say you have coeliac disease when you order.

Is pandoro gluten-free in Verona?

The classic is not: pandoro is wheat, and so are gnocchi and bigoli. Risotto and polenta are gluten-free at the base; ask about the stock and the sauce. In this Verona guide, 2 cards name gluten-free pastries under β€œOrder”: Dolci Sogni Gluten Free (β€œβ˜… Dedicated”) and Pasticceria Roma (β€œGF-serving”). At a place that also bakes with wheat, ask how the gluten-free bakes are kept apart from the wheat flour.

How do I ask for gluten-free food in Italian?

In Verona, say this sentence in Italian before you order: β€œSono celiaco/a. Non posso mangiare glutine e devo evitare anche la contaminazione con farina di grano, pane, pasta, pizza, briciole e olio di frittura condiviso.” In English: β€œI have coeliac disease. I cannot eat gluten, and I also need to avoid cross-contact with wheat flour, bread, pasta, pizza, crumbs and shared frying oil.” Say it every time, at a place marked β€œβ˜… Dedicated” too, and then ask how your food is kept apart.

Is Verona safe for coeliacs?

It depends on the kitchen, not the city. Each card says how we know it and when. Say you have coeliac disease at every order, β˜… places included, and ask how your food is kept apart from flour, crumbs and shared fryer oil.
