Gluten-Free Lake Garda: pizza, pasta, gelato and Gardaland for coeliacs

Gluten-free regional guide ยท the places worth planning around

Gluten-Free Lake Garda

Lake Garda is three regions around one lake: Veneto on the east shore and around Peschiera, Lombardy on the west and south-west, Trentino at the northern tip, and each has its own branch of AIC, the Italian coeliac association. Around the shore you mostly find mixed kitchens serving pizza and pasta, and the good news is how many of them say plainly on their own sites what they do for people who cannot eat gluten: a gluten-free dough, a separate gluten-free menu, pasta cooked gluten-free on request, and in Desenzano a restaurant that describes itself as gluten-free from top to bottom. This guide goes round the lake by area, from Peschiera and Gardaland in the south to Riva, Arco and Torbole in the north.

This is not the whole map. We chose the 16 places below for their evidence: each one says in its own words, on its own site, what it offers gluten-free, and we quote those words on every entry. There is no โ˜… in this edition. A few places near the lake describe themselves as gluten-free only, and we show them as they describe themselves, but the โ˜… waits until a person at How to Gluten Free has checked. Mind the season: from November to March the boats stop, bus lines thin out and many kitchens close, so every entry carries its season as the venue states it.

How to read this guide

We publish evidence, not vibes. Every entry carries its tier, the venue’s own words about its gluten-free handling, a street address, its season and the date a person last checked it. The โ˜… is set only by a person at How to Gluten Free: software never sets it, and a community report never earns it. Our four promises are public at howtoglutenfree.com/what-we-promise.

โ˜… DedicatedA kitchen or shop with no gluten in it, checked by a person at How to Gluten Free. No place in this edition carries it yet.
GF-serving ยท written protocolA kitchen that also cooks with wheat and describes its gluten-free handling in writing.
AIC network ยท in its own wordsThe venue says on its own site that it is part of the AIC network. AIC’s list of network venues is for members, so this is the venue’s claim, shown as it makes it.
AIC ยท AFC accreditedThe venue’s own site claims AIC’s Alimentazione Fuori Casa (AFC) accreditation, the association’s formal eating-out programme and a step beyond a network affiliation.
Checked by us / Checked onlineโ€œChecked by usโ€ means a person at HTGF checked the venue in person. โ€œChecked online ยท not visitedโ€ means a person applied our rule to the venue’s own website; nobody stood in the room.

Around Lake Garda, gluten-free

Lake Garda is shared by three regions: Veneto along the east shore and around Peschiera in the south-east, Lombardy on the west and south-west shores, and Trentino at the northern tip. Each has its own branch of AIC, the Italian coeliac association, and this page goes round the shore in five areas. In the south-east, Peschiera del Garda is the rail gateway from Verona: La Gelateria HomeMade and La Rocca, a pizzeria and trattoria, are in the town, Antica Osteria Busocaldo is outside it, about 3 km from the lake front by our estimate, and Pizzeria Saloon is inside Gardaland, the theme park between Peschiera and Lazise. In the south-west, Il Vicolo is in Sirmioneโ€™s old town, a few minutes on foot from the castle by our estimate, and Desenzano has Kapperi, which describes itself as a gluten-free restaurant, and Rose & Sapori on the lake-front promenade. Up the east shore are La Cantinetta in Bardolino, Pizzeria Ristorante Catullo on Gardaโ€™s lake-front promenade and Bar Pizzeria da Pedro in Malcesine; up the west shore, Ristorante Pizzeria Minerva in Manerba, Ristorante & Pizzeria Al Torchio in Tignale and Ristorante Gemma in Limone; and in the north, Ristorante Pizzeria Lโ€™Ora in Riva del Garda, Pizzeria Ristorante al Fiume in Arco and Bambloo, a gelato shop, in Torbole. Each card shows the place as it describes itself on its own site, and none carries a โ˜…: apart from Kapperi, every one is a mixed kitchen or counter that also works with wheat. Two hotels that write about gluten-free food on their own sites, Hotel Eden in Brenzone and Hotel Monte Baldo in Limone, are under โ€œWhere to stayโ€. The towns are spread right round the lake, so plan by area: the railway reaches the lake at Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione in the south, for the north you take the train to Rovereto and bus B332, and buses and, in season, boats do the rest.

A day that works, while the boats still run (until 1 November 2026): take a regional train from Verona Porta Nuova to Peschiera del Garda, about 13 minutes. Have lunch at La Rocca, which says on its own menu that it has a gluten-free dough but no separate kitchen: say the sentence, hear how they handle it, then decide. Walk the lake front, then have a cup at La Gelateria HomeMade, a couple of minutes on foot from La Rocca by our estimate; it says it has followed AICโ€™s protocol for its gelato since 2024, so ask which flavours are made under it, and ask about cones and biscuit toppings before you choose. For a second day, take the train on the Milan line to Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione. Lunch at the bistro of Rose & Sapori on the lake-front promenade, open every day from 12.30 to 15.00 by its own site: most of its menu comes in a gluten-free version, prepared, it says, in separate areas with dedicated equipment. Then take Arriva bus LN026 or LN008 to Sirmione for the castle at the entrance to its old town; Il Vicolo, a few minutes on foot away by our estimate, has a gluten-free bun for its burgers, so ask about the fryer if you want fries. Back in Desenzano, book dinner at Kapperi, which describes itself as a gluten-free restaurant with a dedicated kitchen. Its opening days arenโ€™t on the pages we read, so check first, and confirm at the door that the whole kitchen is still gluten-free, as its site says.

Mind the season. The passenger boats run on an autumn timetable until 1 November 2026, with many runs daily only until 11 October; from 2 November 2026 to 12 March 2027 the only boat on the lake is the Torri del Benaco-Toscolano Maderno car ferry, about 30 minutes a crossing. ATV buses 482 (Verona airport to Peschiera) and 483 (Peschiera along the east shore to Malcesine) stop after 18 October and return on 21 March 2027; the trains, ATV 484 and 164, Arriva LN026 and LN027 and bus B332 to Riva keep running. Many kitchens close for the winter too, and each card gives its season as the venue states it: Pizzeria Ristorante Catullo in Garda closes for holidays from 1 to 30 November, Bar Pizzeria da Pedro in Malcesine is open every day from April to the first week of November and only at weekends in winter, Ristorante Pizzeria Minerva in Manerba gave 1 April as its 2026 reopening date, and Hotel Edenโ€™s restaurant is open from Easter to 17 October. Where a card says the season isnโ€™t stated, check before you go. Gardaland is open every day until 1 November 2026, closed from 2 November to 4 December, then open on set days for Magic Winter until 6 January 2027. The park says its gluten-free meals are made by an outside specialist company, reheated in a microwave kept for them and served at the table still sealed, at its main restaurants, Pizzeria Saloon among them, and that it runs a gluten-free kiosk in the Dragon Empire area. It also says there is gluten in its pizzeria and kitchens, and it asks you to speak to staff about ingredients before you order; check that the pack is still closed when it reaches you.

Across Italy, many places belong to the coeliac associationโ€™s eating-out programme, Alimentazione Fuori Casa (AFC). AIC calls them ยซinformatiยป, informed: staff trained on coeliac disease, AICโ€™s rules for preparing gluten-free food, a signed agreement, and an in-depth visit from AIC at least once a year. It is not a certificate, and joining is voluntary: plenty of kitchens serve gluten-free food outside it. Around the lake the programme is run by three regional branches: AIC Veneto for Peschiera, Gardaland and the east shore, AIC Lombardia for Sirmione, Desenzano and the west shore, and AIC Trentino for Riva, Arco and Torbole. A venue receives the AFC window sticker when it completes the training, and in Lombardy every AFC venue receives a new one each year, so look for it at the door; in Lombardy a pizzeria that joins must also have an oven kept for gluten-free pizza. AIC Trentino makes a point worth knowing: an AFC place needs no separate kitchen or special equipment, only set procedures to keep gluten-free food from contamination, so the sticker means trained procedures, not a gluten-free kitchen. It adds that almost every restaurant now says it can cater for coeliacs, but mistakes are often made through poor knowledge of how a gluten-free meal must be prepared. On this page, Antica Osteria Busocaldo, La Gelateria HomeMade, Kapperi and Rose & Sapori say on their own sites that they belong to AICโ€™s network; AICโ€™s list of member places is for its members, so that is their claim, shown as they make it. Visitors can buy AIC Mobile Welcome, a 15-day version of the AIC Mobile app, also in English. AIC advises booking ahead so the kitchen can get ready. When you book, and every time you order, say you have coeliac disease: ยซSono celiacoยป or ยซSono celiacaยป.

01 ยท PESCHIERA & GARDALAND

Peschiera & Gardaland

The south-east corner of the lake, in Veneto, and the easiest arrival: regional trains from Verona Porta Nuova reach Peschiera del Garda in about 13 minutes (โ‚ฌ4.05 on Trenitalia’s own planner), and until 18 October 2026 ATV bus 482 runs every hour from Verona airport to Peschiera. Gardaland, the big theme park, sits between Peschiera and Lazise at Castelnuovo del Garda, on ATV bus 164. The park says its gluten-free meals are made by an outside specialist company, reheated in a microwave kept for them and served still sealed, at its main restaurants, and that it runs a gluten-free kiosk in the Dragon Empire area. Its own calendar shows it open every day until 1 November 2026, closed from 2 November to 4 December, then open on selected days for Magic Winter until 6 January 2027.

Antica Osteria Busocaldo

GF-servingAIC network ยท in its own wordsLunch & dinner

Opening days are not stated on the pages we read, so check before you go.

An osteria outside Peschiera town, towards Castelnuovo, about 3 km from the lake front (our estimate): a sit-down meal away from the lakeside crowds, from a kitchen that puts its coeliac menu on its home page.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen that says on its own site it is part of the AIC network (its own site, read 30 September 2026: ยซRistorante del circuito AIC Lโ€™osteria รจ segnalata dallโ€™AIC e offre un menu dedicato ai celiaciยป, in our English: a restaurant in the AIC circuit, listed by AIC, with a menu for coeliacs). Its gluten-free menu, dated December 2025, adds that it belongs to AIC’s Alimentazione Fuori Casa project. AIC’s list is for members, so this is the osteria’s claim, shown as it makes it.

Order

Ask for the gluten-free menu, as the osteria itself asks you to (ยซRichiedi il menรน dedicato al senza glutineยป), and order from it.

Watch out

A kitchen that also cooks with wheat: say the sentence, and book ahead, as AIC advises for its network venues.

La Gelateria HomeMade

Opening months are not stated on the pages we read; many lakeside places close for part of the winter, so check before you go.

An artisan gelateria in Peschiera that puts gluten-free at the centre of its story: its site calls it a ยซgelateria senza glutineยป, and since 2024 it has followed the Italian coeliac association’s protocol for its gelato.

The gluten-free angle

In its own words (its own site, read 30 September 2026): ยซDal 2024 aderiamo al protocollo dell’Associazione Italiana Celiachia per un gelato senza glutineยป, in our English: since 2024 we have followed the AIC protocol for gluten-free gelato. It says it is part of the AIC network; AIC’s list is for members, so this is the shop’s claim, shown as it makes it.

Order

A cup, or ask whether they keep gluten-free cones; ask which flavours they make under the AIC protocol.

Watch out

Ask about cones and biscuit toppings on the counter before you choose.

A pizzeria and trattoria in Peschiera that tells you plainly what it can and can’t do, which is exactly what you want to know before you sit down in a mixed kitchen.

The gluten-free angle

Its own English menu page (read 30 September 2026): โ€œGLUTEN-FREE DOUGH is also available (but we do not have separate kitchen facilities)โ€. A gluten-free dough in a shared kitchen, stated honestly by the venue itself.

Order

The gluten-free pizza; ask how they keep it apart from the wheat dough and flour on the counter, and whether it bakes in the same oven.

Watch out

No separate kitchen, in its own words: say the sentence, hear how they handle it, then decide.

Pizzeria Saloon

GF-servingLunch inside the park

Open only on days the park is open (the park’s calendar: every day until 1 November 2026, closed 2 November to 4 December); the park says each restaurant’s opening days can change.

The pizzeria in Gardaland’s Western Village, one of the places where the park serves its gluten-free meals: the lunch answer when you are inside the park for the whole day.

The gluten-free angle

The park’s own words (its gluten-free menu, read 30 September 2026): โ€œOur dedicated products for a gluten-free diet are produced by an external and certified company. They are heated up in a dedicated microwave oven and served at the table still sealedโ€. The park’s page for the Saloon carries the tag โ€œGluten Free Proposalsโ€, and its help centre lists the Saloon among the places serving the gluten-free menu. The park also says there is gluten in its pizzeria and kitchens.

Order

Ask for the gluten-free menu at the counter; the meal comes sealed, so check the pack is still closed when it reaches you.

Watch out

The park asks you to speak to staff about ingredients before ordering, and says staff can advise only on the 14 legal allergens. The menu file we read is dated 2025, so prices may have moved.

02 ยท SIRMIONE & DESENZANO

Sirmione & Desenzano

The south-west of the lake, in Lombardy. Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione station is on the Milan line: regional trains from Milano Centrale take 1 h 23 min (โ‚ฌ10.50) and from Brescia about 15 to 22 minutes, and Autostradale runs a direct bus from Bergamo airport to the station (120 minutes, from โ‚ฌ15.50 online). Sirmione, on its peninsula, has no station: Arriva buses LN026 and LN008 link it with Desenzano. Two of the kitchens with the most to say about gluten-free on their own sites are here in Desenzano.

Opening months are not stated on the pages we read; check before you go.

A restaurant-pizzeria on Viale Rovereto in Riva with gluten-free pizza on request.

The gluten-free angle

The house pizzas are wheat, so this is a mixed kitchen.

Order

Gluten-free pizza, asked for when you order; ask about the oven and the tray.

Watch out

Bambloo

GF-servingGelato & sorbet

Opening months are not stated on the page we read; check before you go.

A gelato shop in Torbole that makes vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free alternatives, with fruit sorbets it calls naturally free of gluten and lactose.

The gluten-free angle

Its own English site (read 30 September 2026) speaks of โ€œvegan, gluten-free or lactose-free alternativesโ€ and of โ€œa fresh, light and naturally gluten- and lactose-free ice creamโ€. It speaks of alternatives, so we show it as a shop with gluten-free choices, not a gluten-free-only one.

Order

A fruit sorbet in a cup; ask which flavours are gluten-free.

Watch out

Ask about cones, biscuit flavours and the scoops before you choose.

09 ยท Gluten-free shopping

Gluten-free shopping

For self-catering, a picnic on a boat day, or a winter trip when many lakeside kitchens are closed.

Gluten-free shops inland

  • Gluten Free Sans Souci, Via Stazione 10B, Lugagnano di Sona, inland from the south-east shore, about 15 km from the lake by our estimate; closed on Sundays. Its site calls it a shop for gluten-free specialities: ยซtutto gluten free!ยป (all gluten-free).Gluten Free Sans Souci, read 30 September 2026
  • Food Senza Glutine, Via Piorta 6, Bussolengo, also inland. The brandโ€™s site says its shops carry only gluten-free products (ยซesclusivamente prodotti privi di glutineยป); that is the brandโ€™s page, not the shopโ€™s own, so check the Bussolengo shopโ€™s hours before you go.Food Senza Glutine, read 30 September 2026

What to look for

  • ยซSenza glutineยป on a label means no more than 20 mg/kg (EU Regulation 828/2014). The crossed-grain symbol (Spiga Barrata) is AICโ€™s licensed mark on suitable products, and AICโ€™s product list, the Prontuario degli Alimenti, is also in the AIC Mobile app.AIC, read 30 September 2026
  • For the boat days, and for winter trips when many lakeside kitchens are closed, carry a gluten-free snack. This page

Stock varies from shop to shop. Check the label of every product, every time.

10 ยท Plan your trip

Plan your trip

Where to base yourself

  • Peschiera & Gardaland: the rail gateway from Verona, an osteria and a gelateria that say they are in the AIC network, and the park’s sealed gluten-free meals (chapter 1).
  • Sirmione & Desenzano: the station on the Milan line, a gluten-free burger bun in Sirmione, and two Desenzano kitchens that write at length about gluten-free (chapter 2).
  • The east shore: Bardolino, Garda and Malcesine, pizza and pasta with gluten-free options, and Hotel Eden in Brenzone (chapter 3).
  • The west shore: Manerba, Tignale and Limone, a menu with a full gluten-free section, and Hotel Monte Baldo in Limone (chapter 4).
  • The north: Riva, Arco and Torbole in Trentino, by train to Rovereto and bus B332 (chapter 5).

For self-catering, two shops inland from the south-east shore describe themselves as selling only gluten-free food: Gluten Free Sans Souci at Lugagnano di Sona (Via Stazione 10B, about 15 km from the lake by our estimate, closed on Sundays), whose site says ยซtutto gluten free!ยป, and the Food Senza Glutine shop in Bussolengo (Via Piorta 6), whose brand says its shops carry only gluten-free products. Carry a gluten-free snack for the boat days and for winter trips, when many lakeside kitchens are closed.

The one sentence to say

Say it before ordering, every time.

Sono celiaco/a. Non posso mangiare glutine e devo evitare anche la contaminazione con farina di grano, pane, pasta, pizza, briciole e olio di frittura condiviso.

I have coeliac disease. I cannot eat gluten, and I also need to avoid cross-contact with wheat flour, bread, pasta, pizza, crumbs and shared frying oil.

Get the full Italian dining card with the follow-up questions โ†’

The two that go furthest around the lake: at a table, La pizza o la pasta senza glutine la fate con impasto e pentola separati? (โ€œIs the gluten-free pizza or pasta made with a separate dough and pot?โ€) and, for fried food, Per il fritto, c’รจ una friggitrice dedicata al senza glutine? (โ€œFor fried food, is there a dedicated gluten-free fryer?โ€)

Good to know

  • โ€œSenza glutineโ€ on a label means the product stays within 20 mg/kg (20 ppm), under EU Regulation 828/2014, the rule AIC itself points to.
  • Three AIC regions share the lake. AIC Veneto covers Peschiera, Gardaland and the east shore; AIC Lombardia covers Sirmione, Desenzano and the west shore; AIC Trentino covers Riva, Arco and Torbole. Their lists of network venues are for members, but as a visitor you can buy the 15-day AIC Mobile Welcome inside the AIC Mobile app, also in English.
  • An AFC sticker means trained procedures, not a gluten-free kitchen. AIC Trentino says network venues need no separate kitchen or special equipment, only set procedures, and that almost every restaurant now says it can cater for coeliacs while mistakes still happen. So ask how your dish is made, every time.
  • Winter changes the lake. From 2 November 2026 to 12 March 2027 the only boat is the Torri del Benaco-Toscolano Maderno car ferry. ATV bus 482 from Verona airport runs only until 18 October 2026; after that, take the Airlink bus to Verona Porta Nuova (โ‚ฌ7.00, every 20 minutes) and a regional train to Peschiera (about 13 minutes). Trains, ATV buses 484 and 164, Arriva LN026 and LN027 and the B332 bus to Riva keep running.
  • Getting there: from Bergamo airport, Autostradale runs a direct bus to Desenzano station (120 minutes, from โ‚ฌ15.50 online); from Milano Centrale, regional trains reach Desenzano in 1 h 23 min (โ‚ฌ10.50); from Venice airport, take the ATVO bus to Mestre and the train to Peschiera (about 1 h 16 min by Frecciarossa). For the north shore, take the train to Rovereto and bus B332.
