Gluten-Free Modena: bakery, pizza, piadina and shops for coeliacs

Gluten-free city guide Β· the places worth planning around

Gluten-Free Modena

This guide to gluten-free Modena lists 12 places: 7 marked β€œβ˜… Dedicated” and 5 marked β€œGF-serving”. Every card gives the street address, what to order and how we know it: 6 checked on their own website, 2 listed by AIC and 4 listed by a directory (not yet checked by us); the guide was last updated in October 2026. Say you have coeliac disease every time you order, at a β˜… place too.

Modena is the city of tortellini, tigelle and gnocco fritto, all of them wheat. It is also the city of Parmigiano Reggiano and traditional balsamic vinegar, both gluten-free by nature. And for a city its size, it has a deep gluten-free bench: a gluten-free bakery, a 100% gluten-free bistrot, a dessert shop in the Italian coeliac association’s eating-out programme, and a pizzeria branch that makes only gluten-free pizza.

This is a short list on purpose: 12 places whose own website or page we read on 28 September 2026, each quoted in its own words. Seven are entirely gluten-free by their own words or their own name; the rest are mixed kitchens, a gastronomia and pizzerias with a clear gluten-free line. Everything else we track in Modena is on the live map, one link down.

How to read this guide

We publish evidence, not vibes. Every card carries the venue’s own words about how it handles gluten, a street address, and the date we last checked it. The β˜… is set by How to Gluten Free from the venue’s own published words, and a community report never earns it. Our four promises are public at howtoglutenfree.com/what-we-promise.

β˜… DedicatedA bakery, kitchen or shop with no gluten in it, in its own published words.
GF-serving Β· written protocolA kitchen that also cooks with wheat and describes its gluten-free handling in writing.
AIC networkThe venue’s own site or page states an AIC link: staff trained by the Italian coeliac association. Never a reason to skip the sentence.
AIC Β· AFC accreditedThe venue’s own site claims AIC’s Alimentazione Fuori Casa (AFC) accreditation, the association’s formal eating-out programme.
Visited / Own website / ListedEach place says how we know it. β€œVisited by us”: someone from HTGF was there in the month shown (a visit, not a lab test). β€œChecked on its own website”: we read the venue’s own gluten-free wording in the month shown. β€œListed by” and the name of a coeliac association (AIC, Coeliac UK and others): that association lists the place. β€œListed by a directory”: a gluten-free directory lists it and we have not read it at the source yet.
Before you go

Modena on foot, gluten-free

Modena’s historic centre is compact, and its sights sit close together: from Piazza Grande, the Cathedral, the Ghirlandina, the Palazzo Comunale and the Mercato Albinelli are all within a few minutes, the Palazzo Ducale, the Teatro Comunale and the Palazzo dei Musei about 5 minutes away, and the Giardini Ducali about 10, all on foot and by our estimate. The station is about 15 minutes on foot from Piazza Grande, by our estimate, with the Museo Enzo Ferrari close to it. Three places on this page are in that centre: Dulzy on Via Farini, entirely gluten-free crΓͺpes, waffles and frozen yoghurt, about 5 minutes on foot from Piazza Grande by our estimate, and two mixed kitchens with gluten-free dishes, Osteria Stallo del Pomodoro on Largo Hannover and Fusorari on Piazzale Torti, a few steps from the Cathedral. Most of the entirely gluten-free places are outside it: SForno on Viale Sigonio is about 10 minutes on foot west of Piazza Grande, Le stelle di Adua on Via Pascal about 15 and Essenza Glutine on Via Buonarroti about 20, all by our estimate; Luigi Teperino Β· Gluten Free, at Viale Gramsci 141, is north of the station, about 10 minutes on foot from it. Doppiozero on Via Paganelli is a short bus or bike ride away, and Starbene Senza Glutine, Ci Piace Senza Glutine, Apicella and Pizzeria Anissa are best reached by bus or car.

A day that works, ideally a Saturday, when SForno is open in the morning and the afternoon and the Palazzo Ducale gives its guided tours (the Galleria Estense and Luigi Teperino’s gluten-free pizzeria are closed on Mondays). Start in Piazza Grande with the Cathedral and the Ghirlandina at the time you booked, then walk through the Mercato Albinelli, a few minutes away, to look rather than to eat. Dulzy on Via Farini, about 5 minutes on foot from the square by our estimate, is entirely gluten-free, so a crΓͺpe or a waffle there makes an easy mid-morning stop; check its hours first. The Palazzo Ducale, for the weekend tour you booked, is about 5 minutes on foot beyond it. For lunch, walk west past the Palazzo dei Musei and the Galleria Estense to Essenza Glutine on Via Buonarroti, an entirely gluten-free gastronomia and bistrot, about 20 minutes on foot from the museums by our estimate; Le stelle di Adua on Via Pascal, an entirely gluten-free gastronomia with fresh gluten-free pasta, is about 10 minutes from each. On the way back, SForno on Viale Sigonio, an entirely gluten-free artisan bakery, opens again at 16:30, about 10 minutes on foot from Piazza Grande. End the day north of the station at Luigi Teperino Β· Gluten Free, Viale Gramsci 141, where every pizza is gluten-free, open from 18:00; the Museo Enzo Ferrari is about 10 minutes on foot from it, by our estimate, if you want to see it first (open until 19:00 through October, until 18:00 from November).

Across Italy, many places belong to the coeliac association’s eating-out programme, Alimentazione Fuori Casa (AFC). AIC calls them Β«informatiΒ», informed: staff trained on coeliac disease, AIC’s rules for preparing gluten-free food, a signed agreement, and an in-depth visit from AIC at least once a year. It is not a certificate, and joining is voluntary: plenty of kitchens serve gluten-free food outside it. AIC Emilia-Romagna, whose regional office is here in Modena, adds that it cannot take responsibility for a venue’s gluten-free service, which stays with the venue. Member places show the AFC sticker with the current year on the entrance door, so look for it; Dulzy says on its own site that its kitchen has been in the programme since 2015. AIC’s list of member places is for its members, but visitors can buy AIC Mobile Welcome, a 15-day version of the AIC Mobile app, also in English. The Region also has its own rules for food businesses that prepare gluten-free food, and its Alimenti&Salute site publishes, province by province, the businesses notified and authorised to prepare and serve it (the Modena list was last updated in July 2025): a place to check a venue, but not a guarantee either. AIC advises booking ahead so the kitchen can get ready. When you book, and every time you order, say you have coeliac disease: Β«Sono celiacoΒ» or Β«Sono celiacaΒ»; AIC Emilia-Romagna also suggests asking for the person in charge of the gluten-free service.

Modena’s own food is where the traps are. Tortellini, tigelle and gnocco fritto are wheat; gluten-free versions exist, but only from a gluten-free kitchen or with the label. Le stelle di Adua makes fresh gluten-free pasta, so ask there about the tortellini; in a mixed kitchen, ask Β«La pasta senza glutine la cuocete in una pentola a parte, con acqua nuova?Β» (do you cook the gluten-free pasta in a separate pot, in fresh water?). The stalls of the Mercato Albinelli are fresh pasta, tortellini and bread, and La Bonissima, the local producers’ food fair in Piazza Grande from 16 to 18 October 2026, has bakery stands too; none of them is on this page, so walk them and eat elsewhere. Every pizzeria on this page except Luigi Teperino Β· Gluten Free also makes wheat pizza, so ask Β«Come preparate la pizza senza glutine? Impasto, banco e forno sono separati?Β» (how do you make the gluten-free pizza? Are the dough, the work surface and the oven kept separate?). For Teperino, go to number 141 on Viale Gramsci: the brand’s other pizzerias, including the one at Viale Gramsci 106, are not gluten-free. We haven’t checked a Modena hotel breakfast yet, so confirm a gluten-free breakfast when you book, or have breakfast at Starbene Senza Glutine, an entirely gluten-free bakery-cafΓ© on Via Vignolese, in the south of the city. For a day out to Maranello, stock up at Ci Piace Senza Glutine, an entirely gluten-free specialist shop with a bar for fresh gluten-free baking.

Are the dough, the work surface and the oven kept separate?”). For fresh pasta: La pasta senza glutine la cuocete in una pentola a parte, con acqua nuova? (β€œDo you cook the gluten-free pasta in a separate pot, in fresh water?”)

Good to know

  • β€œSenza glutine” means 20 mg/kg (20 ppm) or less, the EU and Codex threshold. A label that says it, means it.
  • Tortellini, tigelle and gnocco fritto contain wheat. Gluten-free versions exist, but only from a gluten-free kitchen or with the label.
  • Parmigiano Reggiano and traditional balsamic vinegar are gluten-free by nature. Cured meats usually are too; check the label on anything flavoured or pre-sliced.
  • An AIC link is a strong signal in a mixed kitchen, not a guarantee. It means the staff have been trained by the Italian coeliac association. Say the sentence anyway.

Eating gluten-free in Modena: common questions

Where can I eat gluten-free in Modena?

The cards are grouped in 4 chapters, from β€œBakery, pastry & sweet” to β€œGluten-free shop”. Each card gives the address, what to order and how we know it. Before you go, check the opening hours, and say you have coeliac disease when you order.

Are there fully gluten-free places in Modena?

In this Modena guide, 7 places are marked β€œβ˜… Dedicated”: SForno Β· Senza Glutine, Dulzy, Starbene Senza Glutine, Essenza Glutine, Le stelle di Adua, Luigi Teperino Β· Gluten Free and Ci Piace Senza Glutine. Each β˜… card says how we know it and when; still say you have coeliac disease when you order.

Are tortellini gluten-free in Modena?

Classic tortellini are not: they are fresh pasta made with wheat flour, so ask for gluten-free ones by name. In this Modena guide, 1 card names tortellini under β€œOrder”: Le stelle di Adua (β€œβ˜… Dedicated”). At a kitchen that also cooks wheat pasta, ask that yours is cooked in a separate pot of fresh water.

How do I ask for gluten-free food in Italian?

In Modena, say this sentence in Italian before you order: β€œSono celiaco/a. Non posso mangiare glutine e devo evitare anche la contaminazione con farina di grano, pane, pasta, pizza, briciole e olio di frittura condiviso.” In English: β€œI have coeliac disease. I cannot eat gluten, and I also need to avoid cross-contact with wheat flour, bread, pasta, pizza, crumbs and shared frying oil.” Say it every time, at a place marked β€œβ˜… Dedicated” too, and then ask how your food is kept apart.

Is Modena safe for coeliacs?

It depends on the kitchen, not the city. Each card says how we know it and when. Say you have coeliac disease at every order, β˜… places included, and ask how your food is kept apart from flour, crumbs and shared fryer oil.

Closures and lost dedicated status are logged as dated facts on the live page, never as judgements. A closed door, a changed menu, a new dedicated place: hello@howtoglutenfree.com or the report button in the app. Readers keep this page alive.

Every listing carries a source and a last-checked date. This guide is a communication and travel aid, not a guarantee, and not medical advice. Kitchens, owners and ways of working change; check at the door.

  • Addresses and dates: HTGF Atlas, read 2 October 2026.
  • Each venue’s gluten-free handling is quoted from its own website or page as we found it; we never print a third party’s claims as our own check.
  • Map links open a Google Maps search for the name and address on file; where a postcode isn’t on file, none is shown.
