Gluten-free ferries and river cruises: what 18 lines say

UPDATED=2026-10-16READ=26 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

Of the 34 ferry, coastal and river cruise lines we read on their own websites on 16 October 2026, 18 publish gluten-free wording. Another 13 publish nothing on gluten-free on the pages we could read, and 3 pages did not load as text. None of the pages we read guarantees a meal free of gluten or of cross-contact.

How we checked. Read on 16 October 2026. We read each line’s own pages as plain text, without a browser or a login. Quotes are copied from our saved copies and checked against them word for word. Our summaries say what a page says and nothing more. A page without gluten-free wording is not proof that a line refuses gluten-free meals: it means the page we could read says nothing about it. Pages that did not load are listed in their own section. Last verified: 16 October 2026.

Which ferry and coastal lines say gluten-free on their own pages?

14 lines. Each card first says what the line’s pages say in plain words, then gives the line’s own words, then any limit the line states.

How do I ask a line before I sail?

Write before you travel, using the line’s own contact page or booking channel. Put your booking number in the email and ask for a written reply. Write in English unless the line’s site asks for another language. For an Italian line, use the Italian card from our translation cards page.

Subject: coeliac disease, gluten-free meals for my crossing on [date] (booking [number])

Hello, I have a booking for [date] under the name [name] (booking number [number]).

I have coeliac disease, an autoimmune medical condition, not a diet choice or preference.

I cannot eat wheat (including spelt, kamut, durum and semolina), barley, rye or standard oats, or anything made from them: bread, pasta, batter, breadcrumbs, flour.

Even a tiny amount, a crumb, makes me genuinely ill.

Could your restaurant staff tell me which dishes are gluten-free and prepared apart from the others? If I eat at the buffet, could you show me which dishes I can have?

Does this contain soy sauce, malt, flour, breadcrumbs or stock cubes? Could you check?

Could you please check the ingredients with the kitchen? I am very happy to wait.

I can eat rice, corn, potatoes, plain fresh meat and fish, eggs, dairy, vegetables and fruit, as long as they are not cooked with, or alongside, the items above.

Could you reply by email, so that I can plan? If that isn’t possible, please just tell me.

Thank you so much for taking care of this. It genuinely makes all the difference.

Ask again at check-in, and tell the restaurant staff when you sit down or stand at the buffet.

What should I pack for a crossing?

Practical items only. For medical questions, talk to your own doctor or your coeliac association.

  • A copy of your email to the line, with your booking number, and any written reply.
  • A printed translation card in the language of the crew, if the line does not take English.
  • A few snacks you already know are gluten-free, in sealed packs. GNV’s presale page says the gluten-free choice on some routes is limited, so a backup helps. Source: gnv.it, read 16 October 2026
  • The line’s own rule on bringing food on board. Condor’s FAQ says passengers may bring their own food and drink and consume it during the sailing, so check your own line’s rule before you pack. Source: condorferries.co.uk, read 16 October 2026

Frequently asked questions

Do ferry lines serve gluten-free food?

Some do, and they say so on their own pages. Of the 34 lines we read on 16 October 2026, 18 publish gluten-free wording, 13 publish none on the pages we could read, and 3 pages could not be read. The wording runs from gluten-free bread in one buffet to a gluten-free breakfast on a menu.

Is gluten-free food on a ferry safe for coeliacs?

There is no yes for a whole ship. It depends on the dish and the kitchen. Ask which dishes are prepared apart from the others, and whether the buffet items can be checked with the kitchen. 10 lines state a limit on their own pages. 8 name cross-contact or traces: Irish Ferries, Tallink Silja, Color Line, Hurtigruten, Tirrenia, Baleària, Viking River Cruises and AmaWaterways. 2 say the choice is limited: Fjord Line and GNV.

Do I have to tell the line before I sail?

Many lines ask you to say so when you book or before you travel. Hurtigruten asks for at least two weeks before departure, and Viking asks for 90 days. A-ROSA asks guests to contact its service centre before travel. Avalon invites you to share restrictions on day one. Use the line’s own channel, and keep the written reply.

What do the lines say about buffet and à la carte dining?

Tallink Silja recommends its à la carte restaurants for a more tailored dining experience for guests with severe food allergies. We do not rank the options. Whichever you choose, ask the staff how buffet dishes are served and whether they can be checked with the kitchen.

How will I know which dishes are gluten-free on board?

Look for labels, and ask. Tallink Silja’s menu filter has a ‘Gluten free’ label, Condor’s onboard menus label gluten-free products beside vegetarian labels, Finnlines shows special diets and allergens beside the dishes, and Avalon’s menus carry allergen labels that include gluten. Where a menu has no label, ask the staff in that restaurant.
