Gluten-Free Edinburgh

This guide to gluten-free Edinburgh lists 12 places: 2 marked β€œβ˜… Dedicated” and 10 marked β€œGF-serving”. Every card gives the street address, what to order and how we know it: 11 checked on their own website and 1 listed by a directory (not yet checked by us); the guide was last updated in October 2026. Say you have coeliac disease every time you order, at a β˜… place too.

Edinburgh’s classics are hard going with coeliac disease: shortbread is made with wheat flour, fish suppers come in batter, and haggis is made with oatmeal. The good news: two bakeries where everything is gluten-free, a brewery founded by two coeliac friends, and a handful of mixed kitchens that explain in their own words how they handle gluten-free food.

This is a short list on purpose: 12 places whose own website or menu we read on 29 September 2026, each quoted in its own words. Two are entirely gluten-free; the rest are mixed kitchens with gluten-free options. Everything else we track in Edinburgh is on the live map, one link down.

How to read this guide

We publish evidence, not vibes. Every card carries the venue’s own words about how it handles gluten, a street address, and the date we last checked it. The β˜… is set by How to Gluten Free from the venue’s own published words, and a community report never earns it. Our four promises are public at howtoglutenfree.com/what-we-promise.

β˜… DedicatedA bakery, kitchen or shop with no gluten in it, in its own published words.
GF-serving Β· written protocolA kitchen that also cooks with wheat and describes its gluten-free handling in writing.
Visited / Own website / ListedEach place says how we know it. β€œVisited by us”: someone from HTGF was there in the month shown (a visit, not a lab test). β€œChecked on its own website”: we read the venue’s own gluten-free wording in the month shown. β€œListed by” and the name of a coeliac association (AIC, Coeliac UK and others): that association lists the place. β€œListed by a directory”: a gluten-free directory lists it and we have not read it at the source yet.
Before you go

Edinburgh on foot, gluten-free

Edinburgh is a small city for its fame. VisitScotland puts it plainly: Β«Edinburgh is easily explored on foot with most key attractions within walking distance of each other.Β» The places on this page gather in three areas: the south side around Marchmont and Bruntsfield, the New Town streets north of Princes Street, and Leith down by the water.

A day that works: breakfast or a cake box at Confelicity or Sugar Daddy’s, then a walk across the Meadows to the National Museum and up to the Royal Mile, about 15 to 20 minutes. After the Castle and the gardens, Frederick Street is five minutes away for an early dinner at CΓ΄te or Greenwoods. On another evening, take the tram or a bus down Leith Walk to Nobles by Bellfield, where Bellfield’s own beers, gluten-free in the brewery’s own words, are on tap (the guest beers are not).

In August, when the Festival Fringe fills the city, and around Christmas, when the market takes over East Princes Street Gardens, tables go fast. Book ahead, and say β€œcoeliac” when you do: it is the word staff here know.

01 Β· ENTIRELY GLUTEN-FREE

Entirely gluten-free

Two bakeries where everything is gluten-free, in their own words: a takeaway cake bakery in Marchmont and a bakery cafΓ© in Bruntsfield run by a coeliac chef. Every Edinburgh bakery whose own site we have read, on one page: gluten-free bakery in Edinburgh: 5 places, 2 dedicated. Start here.

01

Sugar Daddy’s Bakery

β˜… DedicatedBakery

A takeaway bakery where everything is baked gluten-free on the premises: cupcakes, pastries, cookies and cakes, for coeliacs and everyone else.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site: Β«everything we bake is completely gluten free, including cupcakes, pastries, cookies, celebration cakes and wedding cakesΒ», and Β«We cater for coeliacs and gluten eaters alikeΒ».

Order

Cupcakes, pastries or cookies to take away.

Watch out

Takeaway only, and daytime only: its site gives Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 3 pm. It bakes with other allergens, nuts included, so mention any other allergy.

Confelicity Bakery

β˜… DedicatedBakery cafΓ©

A gluten-free bakery and cafΓ© founded by a chef with coeliac disease: sourdough, celebration cakes, breakfast, lunch and seasonal bakes.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site: Β«A dedicated gluten-free bakery and cafΓ©.Β» The founder’s story: Β«After a Coeliac diagnosis, James missed eating so many gluten-containing foodsΒ».

Order

Breakfast or lunch at a table, and a loaf of the sourdough to take away.

Watch out

Daytime only: its site gives Wednesday to Sunday, 8 am to 3 pm, closed Monday and Tuesday.

02 Β· BREAKFAST, COFFEE & CAKE

Breakfast, coffee & cake

A breakfast cafΓ© with gluten-free toast, and two bakeries that bake with wheat but keep a few gluten-free things on the counter. All mixed: say the sentence every time.

03

Greenwoods Edinburgh

GF-servingBreakfast & brunch

A breakfast and brunch cafΓ© with gluten-free toast among the bread choices, dishes marked where a gluten-free version is available, and a gluten-free lager from Leith.

The gluten-free angle

Its own menu: Β«Toast choices: white, brown, gluten free, homemade soda bread or homemade vegan soda bread.Β»

Order

Breakfast on gluten-free toast, or a dish marked Β«gluten free availableΒ».

Watch out

Gluten-free toast sits next to the wheat breads: ask whether it goes through its own toaster or a toaster bag. The menu itself only says to tell your server about allergies. Hours on its site: Monday to Friday 8 am to 2.30 pm, weekends 8 am to 3.30 pm.

Krema Bakehouse

GF-servingBakery

A bakery of Greek-inspired cakes and traybakes, with some of them gluten-free.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site describes a range of cakes and traybakes Β«including vegan and gluten-free optionsΒ».

Order

Whichever traybake is gluten-free that day. Ask at the counter.

Watch out

This is a wheat bakery first (buns and layered doughs), so flour is part of the room. Ask how the gluten-free bakes are made, kept and boxed. Its site gives no hours or street number: check before you go.

Patina

GF-servingBakery cafΓ©

A bakery cafΓ© that bakes everything on site by hand, with a few gluten-free things marked on its menu: a brownie, the soup of the day and two salads.

The gluten-free angle

Its own menu: Β«Chocolate Brownie (gluten free)Β» and Β«Soup of the Day (gluten free)Β».

Order

The soup or a salad for lunch, and the brownie.

Watch out

Croissants, sourdough and pastries are baked here, so flour is in the air. Ask how the brownie is kept apart. Its site gives no opening hours. It used to call itself a bar and restaurant; the site now shows the bakery cafΓ© only.

03 Β· GLUTEN-FREE BEER

Gluten-free beer

A brewery founded by two coeliac friends, whose own beers are all gluten-free, and its second bar in Leith with a kitchen. Guest beers on tap are not always gluten-free: check each one.

06

Bellfield Brewery

GF-servingTaproom

The brewery’s own taproom. Every Bellfield beer is gluten-free in its own words, and it publishes gluten test results for them on its site.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site: Β«Bellfield was founded by two friends who are both Coeliac.Β»

Order

Any Bellfield beer on tap; its tap list marks them gluten-free.

Watch out

The taproom also pours guest beers that are not gluten-free, so check each one on the tap list. Food comes from guest pop-ups or takeaways, not its own kitchen: ask each one separately. Hours on its site: Wednesday to Sunday, from 2:30 pm on weekdays and noon at weekends.

Nobles by Bellfield

GF-servingBar & kitchen

Bellfield’s second venue, a bar with its own kitchen, where most of the menu is gluten-free or can be adapted, and Bellfield’s gluten-free beers are on tap.

The gluten-free angle

Its own menu: Β«Most dishes on the menu are gluten free or can be easily adapted, and the team are always happy to help with dietary requirements.Β»

Order

Dishes marked (GF) on the menu, with a Bellfield beer.

Watch out

The menu has fried snacks: ask whether the fryer is shared with anything breaded. Guest beers on the list are not all gluten-free. Food hours on its site: Wednesday and Thursday 5 to 9 pm, Friday to Sunday noon to 9 pm.

04 Β· DINNER

Dinner

A French brasserie chain that names its Coeliac UK accreditation, a family Italian with gluten-free pasta and pizza bases, two chains with gluten-free menus on request, and a restaurant with a gluten-free burger bun. All mixed kitchens: the sentence matters every time.

08

CΓ΄te Edinburgh

GF-servingFrench brasserie

A French brasserie with plenty of gluten-free dishes, from a chain that describes its gluten-free kitchen practice in detail.

The gluten-free angle

Its own gluten-free page: Β«We are very proud to be a long-standing partner of Coeliac UK and have been accreditedΒ» since 2016, and Β«In the kitchen, we have dedicated gluten free counter spaces, equipment and utensils.Β»

Order

Dishes marked GF on the menu. They come to the table with a gluten-free flag.

Watch out

The accreditation is written for the whole chain, not for this branch alone. Say the sentence anyway, and check for the gluten-free flag when your plate arrives. Hours on its site: from 8 am every day.

Jolly

GF-servingItalian

A family-run Italian with a traditional pizza oven, open since 1972, that makes most dishes with gluten-free pasta or pizza bases on request.

The gluten-free angle

Its own menu: Β«GLUTEN-FREE: Ask and we will happily prepare most dishes with gluten-free pasta / pizza bases.Β»

Order

A pizza on a gluten-free base, or pasta made gluten-free.

Watch out

Its site says nothing about the oven or the pasta water. Ask whether the gluten-free pizza bakes on the same oven floor as the wheat pizzas, and whether the pasta gets its own water. Breadcrumbed mozzarella is on the starters: skip anything fried unless the fryer is kept for gluten-free food.

Bella Italia

GF-servingItalian

Two branches of the Italian chain, both with gluten-free options in their own words. There is no separate gluten-free menu: gluten-free pasta and pizza are made on request.

The gluten-free angle

Its own gluten-free page: Β«We will prepare your food in a separate area of the kitchen to avoid cross-contamination and serve it with a gluten-free flagΒ», and Β«We do not offer a specific gluten-free menu.Β»

Order

Gluten-free pasta or pizza, asked for at the start.

Watch out

Tell your server when you arrive, and ask whether the gluten-free pizza shares the oven. The North Bridge branch takes walk-ins only; the second branch is on Hanover Street.

The gluten-free angle

Its own menu: burgers Β«all available on gluten free bunΒ».

Order

A burger on the gluten-free bun.

Watch out

The burgers come with fries, and the same menu has tempura-battered haddock: ask whether the fries have their own fryer before you take them.

Plan your trip

Where to base yourself

  • Marchmont and Bruntsfield: the two entirely gluten-free bakeries, Sugar Daddy’s on Roseneath Street and Confelicity on Bruntsfield Place (chapter 1).
  • Frederick Street, Hanover Street and North Bridge: Greenwoods and CΓ΄te on Frederick Street, and the two Bella Italia branches (chapters 2 and 4).
  • Leith Walk and Leith: Krema Bakehouse on Leith Walk, Jolly on Elm Row and Nobles by Bellfield on Constitution Street (chapters 2, 3 and 4).
  • Elsewhere in the city: the Bellfield Brewery taproom on Stanley Place, Herringbone on Whitehouse Road, Patina at Edinburgh Park and Frankie & Benny’s at Fort Kinnaird. Check the map before you set off (chapters 2, 3 and 4).

We haven’t checked an Edinburgh hotel breakfast ourselves. When you book, ask about a gluten-free breakfast and how the toast is made, and pick a room with a fridge: Sugar Daddy’s and Confelicity (chapter 1) are good for stocking up on cakes and a loaf.

The one sentence to say

Say it before ordering, every time, dedicated kitchen or not. In the UK, β€œcoeliac” is the word staff know.

I have coeliac disease. I can’t eat gluten: no wheat, barley, rye, malt or ordinary oats, and nothing cooked in shared fryer oil or on a surface with flour or crumbs.

Get the dining card with the follow-up questions β†’

Two follow-ups that help. For anything fried: β€œIs the fryer used only for gluten-free food?” For sauces and batters: β€œIs there any malt, beer or soy sauce in this?”

Good to know

  • β€œGluten-free” on a label means no more than 20 mg/kg (20 ppm), the rule in UK law (Regulation (EU) No 828/2014 as kept in UK law).
  • β€œVery low gluten” is not gluten-free. It allows up to 100 mg/kg, and applies to specially processed wheat, rye, barley or oat ingredients.
  • Oats in a gluten-free food must be specially produced to keep them under 20 mg/kg. Ordinary oats are not; if oats don’t suit you, ask about porridge, granola and baking.
  • Chips are the classic trap. Many kitchens and chip shops fry them in the same oil as battered fish or breaded food. Ask about the fryer every time.
  • Haggis is made with oatmeal, and most black pudding contains oatmeal or wheat. Ordinary oats are not gluten-free, so at a full Scottish breakfast, ask which items are gluten-free before you order.

09 Β· Questions

Eating gluten-free in Edinburgh: common questions

Where can I eat gluten-free in Edinburgh?

The cards are grouped in 4 chapters, from β€œEntirely gluten-free” to β€œDinner”. Each card gives the address, what to order and how we know it. Before you go, check the opening hours, and say you have coeliac disease when you order.

Are there fully gluten-free places in Edinburgh?

In this Edinburgh guide, 2 places are marked β€œβ˜… Dedicated”: Sugar Daddy’s Bakery and Confelicity Bakery. Each β˜… card says how we know it and when; still say you have coeliac disease when you order.

Is shortbread gluten-free in Edinburgh?

The classic is not: shortbread is made with wheat flour, fish suppers come in batter, and haggis is made with oatmeal. In this Edinburgh guide, 4 cards name gluten-free baking under β€œOrder”: Sugar Daddy’s Bakery (β€œβ˜… Dedicated”), Confelicity Bakery (β€œβ˜… Dedicated”), Krema Bakehouse (β€œGF-serving”) and Patina (β€œGF-serving”). At a cafΓ© that also bakes with wheat, ask how the gluten-free bakes are kept apart; if you avoid oats, ask about those too.

What should I say when I order gluten-free in Edinburgh?

In Edinburgh, say this sentence before you order: β€œI have coeliac disease. I can’t eat gluten: no wheat, barley, rye, malt or ordinary oats, and nothing cooked in shared fryer oil or on a surface with flour or crumbs.” Say it every time, at a place marked β€œβ˜… Dedicated” too, and then ask how your food is kept apart.

Is Edinburgh safe for coeliacs?

It depends on the kitchen, not the city. Each card says how we know it and when. Say you have coeliac disease at every order, β˜… places included, and ask how your food is kept apart from flour, crumbs and shared fryer oil.
