Gluten-free at the Vilnius Christmas market: what you can actually eat
The short answer
Christmas in Vilnius centres on Cathedral Square (Katedros aikštÄ—), where the city’s Christmas tree goes up each year; last season a Christmas market surrounded it. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts and the mulled wine (karštas vynas) in your mug. Meduoliai, the Lithuanian honey biscuits, and most other baked sweets are a flour bake, so treat them as wheat. For a proper meal, Vilnius is still a thin city on our list: one bakery listed as dedicated gluten-free and three places listed with gluten-free options, none of them checked by us yet.
New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market
This season’s market
The tree on Cathedral Square and the season’s events are part of the city’s “Christmas in Vilnius” festival. This year’s dates are on the organiser’s page: kaledossostineje.lt. It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes.
What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t
Same tiers as anywhere, and no stall named. Roasted chestnuts are naturally gluten-free; ask whether the drum is used for anything else. Mulled wine is wine, sugar and spices by recipe. Like any alcoholic drink over 1.2%, it needs no ingredient list, but the seller must still be able to tell you if it contains a gluten allergen, so ask about a ready spice mix. Roasted almonds are ask-first: is it just almonds, sugar and cinnamon, or is anything dusted on after roasting, and are they open beside other sweets? Meduoliai are made from flour, honey and eggs in the usual recipe, so treat them as a pass unless a stall shows you otherwise.
