Gluten-free at the Kraków Christmas market: what you can actually eat

UPDATED=2026-09-24READ=5 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

The short answer

Kraków’s Christmas market fills Rynek Główny, the Main Market Square. The organiser confirmed to us by email in September 2026 that no food stall offers gluten-free food. So at the market itself, stick to the naturally gluten-free whole things: roasted chestnuts, the mulled wine in your mug, coffee or a pure tea. Pierogi are a flour dough, so treat them as containing gluten. For a real meal, Kraków has a good bench: two dedicated gluten-free places we’ve checked, several more listed as dedicated, and a restaurant whose gluten-free information we’ve read.

New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market

This season’s market

The Christmas market on Rynek Główny is planned, as the organiser prints it, from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, or to 6 January 2027. The final closing date isn’t fixed yet, and opening hours aren’t printed yet. Official page: kiermasze.com.pl. It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes.

What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t

Same tiers as anywhere, and no stall named. Pierogi are a dough of flour and water whatever the filling, so treat them as containing gluten. Oscypek, the salted sheep’s-milk cheese from southern Poland, is cheese at its base, but at a stall it’s often pan-fried and served with cranberry, so ask what else goes in the pan and what’s in the cranberry. Roasted chestnuts are naturally gluten-free; ask whether the drum is used for anything else. Mulled wine (grzaniec) is wine, sugar and spices by recipe; ask about a ready spice mix. Coffee and pure teas without additives are gluten-free; beer contains gluten. A grilled sausage (kieÅ‚basa) is mostly meat and spices; the roll, the shared grill and any sauce are the real risk, so ask, and take it on a plate.

Since the organiser says no stall offers gluten-free food, don’t expect a labelled gluten-free option at the market. Save the real meal for the kitchens below.

Getting there and staying

We don’t yet have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a Kraków stay, so we don’t name one here. The dedicated places above are the steadier bet for breakfast.

FAQ

What can I eat at the Kraków Christmas market if I’m coeliac?
The organiser says no food stall offers gluten-free food, so stick to the whole things: roasted chestnuts, the mulled wine in your mug, coffee and pure teas. Pierogi are a flour dough. Oscypek is cheese at its base, but ask about the pan and the cranberry.

Is oscypek gluten-free?
The cheese itself is salted sheep’s milk, with no flour in it. At a stall it’s often pan-fried and served with cranberry, so ask what else goes in the pan and what’s in the cranberry.

Are there dedicated gluten-free places in Kraków?
Yes. Zapiekane Gluten Free Bistro and Cakester Cafe | MATCHA are dedicated gluten-free places we’ve checked. Several more are listed as dedicated gluten-free but not yet checked by us.

Is mulled wine (grzaniec) gluten-free?
By recipe, mulled wine is wine, sugar and spices. Ask about a ready spice mix before you assume.
