Gluten-free at the Helsinki Christmas market: what you can actually eat

The short answer

Helsinki’s Christmas market, Tuomaan markkinat (St Thomas’s Market), fills Senate Square from late November until just before Christmas. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, and glögi once you’ve asked what’s in it. Joulutorttu and piparkakku, the two classic Finnish Christmas bakes, are wheat. The good news is off the square: Helsinki has three dedicated gluten-free places we’ve checked against their own sites, a bakery café, a specialty shop and a cookie café.

This season’s market

The Helsinki Christmas Market (Tuomaan markkinat) runs from 27 November to 22 December 2026 on Senate Square. Opening hours, as the organiser prints them: Monday to Thursday and Sunday 11:00 to 19:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 20:00. Official page: tuomaanmarkkinat.fi.

Alongside the stalls, the organiser mentions a licensed food court. It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes.

What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t

We never name an individual stall, and we haven’t seen this year’s stall list. These are the Finnish Christmas foods and drinks you may meet, and how they sit for gluten.

• Glögi is Finland’s mulled drink. It’s made with wine, or without alcohol by using fruit or berry juice instead, with spices such as cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and ginger. Under EU rules a drink over 1.2% alcohol doesn’t need an ingredient list, but allergens such as gluten must still be declared, so the seller should be able to tell you. Ask what the base is and whether a ready spice mix goes in.
• Roasted chestnuts are naturally gluten-free. They’re roasted in the shell, so ask whether the drum is used for anything else.
• Roasted almonds are usually almonds, sugar and cinnamon. Ask whether anything is dusted on after roasting, and pass on ones sitting open beside biscuits and cakes.
• Joulutorttu, the star-shaped Christmas pastry, is traditionally puff pastry filled with prune jam. Treat it as containing gluten unless it’s labelled gluten-free.
• Piparkakku, Finnish gingerbread, is made with wheat flour. Same rule: gluten unless labelled gluten-free.

• Magnolia Coffee & Bakery Tripla, bakery café, Mall of Tripla, 4th floor, Firdonkatu 2. Its own site says all its products are gluten-free, and that it bakes without wheat flour.
• Keliapuoti, gluten-free specialty shop, Hakaniemi Market Hall, 1st floor, Hämeentie 1. By its own description, a shop for gluten-free pastries, cakes, breads and dry goods.
• Se. Cookies & Coffee by NE KEKSIT, cookie café, Itämerenkuja 1, Ruoholahti. Its own site says all its cookies are gluten-free.

• Restaurant Green Hippo – Töölö, restaurant, Sandelsinkatu 2. Its own page says there are plenty of gluten-free options and marks gluten-free dishes on the menu.

Senate Square is in central Helsinki. We don’t yet have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a Helsinki stay, so we don’t name one here. Until we do, the three dedicated places above are the easiest way to plan a gluten-free breakfast or coffee stop.
