Gluten-free at the Graz Christmas market: what a coeliac can eat
The short answer
Advent in Graz spreads across the old town’s squares, with the main Christkindlmarkt in front of the town hall on the Hauptplatz. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, the drink in your mug, coffee or a pure tea. Most of the dough-based stall food is wheat. We haven’t walked this market yet, and we haven’t checked a Graz kitchen ourselves, so this page gives you the market, the method and a short list of places with gluten-free options that we haven’t checked yet.
New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market
This season’s market
The Christkindlmarkt vor dem Rathaus on the Hauptplatz runs from 20 November to 24 December 2026. Opening hours, as the organiser prints them: stalls daily 11am to 8pm, food and drink daily 11am to 10pm, and 11am to 2pm on 24 December.
Around it, more than a dozen smaller Advent markets fill other squares and courtyards, from the Franziskanerviertel and the Mehlplatz to the Schloßberg. Most open on 20 November and close on 23 or 24 December, each with its own hours. Official page for all of them: holding-graz.at/de/advent-in-graz.
These are mixed markets, not gluten-free ones, so treat them the way the hub describes: a market stall is a food business, and asking what’s in the food, and what else touches it, is your right.
What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t
Same tiers as anywhere, and no stall named. Roasted chestnuts (Maroni), the Glühwein in your mug, and coffee or a pure tea are reliably gluten-free by their nature, handling permitting: ask whether the chestnut drum is used for anything else. Austria’s Jagertee, made from spirit, tea and Inländerrum, has no cereal in its definition and sits in the same column. Schupfnudeln, Kässpätzle and Strauben are wheat almost every time, and Lángos is a bread dough. Gebrannte Mandeln and Kartoffelpuffer are ask-first: ask whether anything is dusted on the almonds after roasting, and ask about the binder and the fryer for the Puffer. For the grill sausage itself, we haven’t found a source on what goes into Austrian grill sausages, so we make no claim either way: ask at the stall, and have it without the roll, which is wheat.

Getting there and staying
We don’t yet have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a Graz stay, so we don’t name one here. Graz pairs well with Vienna on an Austrian Advent trip: see our Vienna page, where the dedicated gluten-free kitchens are.
FAQ
What can I eat at the Graz Christmas market if I’m coeliac?
The whole things: roasted chestnuts, the Glühwein or Jagertee in your mug, coffee and pure teas. Schupfnudeln, Kässpätzle, Strauben and Lángos are wheat. Ask about the grill sausage, and take it without the roll.
Are there dedicated gluten-free places in Graz?
Not on our list yet. A handful of Graz places are listed with gluten-free options, not yet checked by us (see the list above), and the Atlas shows what we hold for Graz, each entry with its evidence label. This page will change as soon as we’ve checked a kitchen properly.
When does the Graz Christmas market run in 2026?
The Christkindlmarkt on the Hauptplatz runs from 20 November to 24 December 2026, as the organiser prints it. The other Advent markets around the old town have their own dates and hours on the official Advent in Graz page.
Is mulled wine gluten-free?
By EU definition Glühwein is wine, sugar and spices, with no gluten-containing ingredient. Ask about a ready spice mix. Allergens must be declared on alcoholic drinks over 1.2% too.
