Naples Β· gluten-free pastry

In Naples, 2 pastry shops are dedicated gluten-free kitchens in our rating (β˜…): the Leopoldo Senza Glutine pastry bar on Piazza Cavour, with sfogliatelle, babΓ  and pastiere from the Leopoldo group’s gluten-free line, and Casa Infante Zero Glutine in the Vomero, with the brand’s β€œZero Glutine” line. Another 4 bakeries and counters also work with wheat and have a gluten-free line or a few gluten-free sweets (◐): bread and pastry, taralli, cannoli, cornetti and graffe. A further 6 are listed by a directory or an online map listing, and we haven’t checked them yet.

How gluten-free pastry works in Naples

Neapolitan pastry is made of wheat: sfogliatella, babΓ , pastiera, cornetto, graffa. On this page two places are dedicated gluten-free kitchens in our rating: the Leopoldo Senza Glutine pastry bar on Piazza Cavour and Casa Infante Zero Glutine in the Vomero. The others are bakeries and counters that also work with wheat and have a gluten-free line or a few gluten-free items.

In a mixed bakery the flour is everywhere, so two things count: where the gluten-free item is made, and how it is kept and served at the counter. The graffa and the classic cannolo shell are fried: ask whether the gluten-free ones go into separate oil.

At the counter, ask three things. Which sweets are gluten-free, and are they made here or in a dedicated lab? How do you keep them apart in the display and when you serve them? And for anything fried: is the oil only for gluten-free? Always say you have coeliac disease.

  1. Leopoldo Cafebar Senza Glutine

    β˜… Dedicated Pastry bar Β· gluten-free

πŸ“ Piazza Cavour 78/79, 80137 Napoli Β· Piazza Cavour, by the Archaeological Museum Β· Open in Google Maps β†—

Serves: The Neapolitan morning from the Leopoldo gluten-free line: sfogliatelle, babΓ , pastiere and other Neapolitan pastries, with coffee.

How they handle it: The Leopoldo pastry group lists this shop as β€œLeopoldo Senza Glutine Piazza Cavour 78/79 Napoli”. Its FAQ says β€œi prodotti gluten-free vengono preparati separatamente dalla pasticceria tradizionale napoletana per evitare la contaminazione incrociata” (the gluten-free products are made separately from the traditional pastry, to avoid cross-contamination), and the group names β€œulteriori due laboratori di produzione, dedicati rispettivamente al senza glutine e senza lattosio ed alla produzione di taralli” (production labs, one for gluten-free and lactose-free, one for taralli).

Watch out: The group’s other shops in Naples sell its traditional pastry: for gluten-free, come to this one on Piazza Cavour.

  2. Casa Infante Zero Glutine

β˜… Dedicated Pastry shop Β· Zero Glutine line

πŸ“ Largo Antignano 20, Napoli Β· Vomero, Largo Antignano Β· Open in Google Maps β†—

Serves: Neapolitan cakes from the brand’s gluten-free line, such as β€œPastiera Senza Glutine” and β€œCrostata Caracciolo Senza Glutine”.

How they handle it: The Casa Infante brand sells this line on its own site under the heading β€œZERO GLUTINE Delizie che possono gustare tutti” (treats everyone can enjoy). The brand says this for the line, not for this shop: its site doesn’t describe how the Largo Antignano shop handles gluten-free.

Watch out: Brand-level words only: ask whether everything on the counter is gluten-free, and say you have coeliac disease.

Are gluten-free bakeries in Naples safe for coeliacs?

It depends on the kitchen, not the city. We rate the 2 β˜… places, Leopoldo Senza Glutine on Piazza Cavour and Casa Infante Zero Glutine in the Vomero, as dedicated gluten-free kitchens, and each card quotes what the place or its brand says: the Leopoldo group, for example, says its gluten-free products are made separately from its traditional pastry. In the other bakeries, ask where the gluten-free item is made and how it is served. Always say you have coeliac disease.

Where can I get a gluten-free sfogliatella in Naples?

At Leopoldo Senza Glutine on Piazza Cavour: sfogliatelle are in the Leopoldo group’s gluten-free line, with babΓ  and pastiere. Ask what is in that day.

Can I get a gluten-free cannolo in Naples?

AMMU Cannoli Espressi Siciliani on Via Chiaia offers a gluten-free shell next to the classic fried one, and fills the cannoli to order. Ask how the gluten-free shell is stored and for a clean piping bag.

Where can I find gluten-free cornetti and graffe in Naples?

The menu of Parentesi Graffe on Via Conte di Ruvo lists gluten-free cornetti, a gluten-free graffa and gluten-free muffins next to the regular ones. The graffa is fried: ask whether the gluten-free one goes into separate oil.
