Are French fries gluten-free? The potato is, the fryer decides

UPDATED=2026-09-28READ=2 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

The potato is gluten-free. Whether the fries are depends on two things: what is on them and what else is cooked in the same oil.

What to check

  • The fryer. If battered fish, breaded chicken or onion rings go into the same oil, the fries pick up gluten. Ask: “Do the fries have their own fryer?”
  • Coatings. Some “extra crispy”, “seasoned” or “beer-battered” fries have a wheat-flour coating. On a bag, read the ingredients.
  • Flavourings. A few fast-food fries list wheat in their flavouring. Check the allergen list for the country you are in, because recipes differ.
  • At home: plain frozen fries or your own cut potatoes in clean oil are the easy win.
