Gluten-free at the Warsaw Old Town Christmas market: what you can actually eat
The short answer
This page covers Warsaw’s Christmas market at the Barbakan in the Old Town, on the MiÄ™dzymurze. It is not the market on Plac Defilad by the Palace of Culture, which is a separate event in a different part of the city. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, the mulled wine in your mug, coffee or a pure tea. Pierogi are a flour dough, so treat them as containing gluten. We haven’t walked this market ourselves yet, but Warsaw gives you two dedicated gluten-free bakeries we’ve checked, plus a wider list of places to look at.
New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market
This season’s market
This year’s dates go up on the market’s listing page: pik.warszawa.pl. When we checked on 24 September 2026, they weren’t printed yet, so look again before you travel. When you search, check you have the right market: the Plac Defilad market has its own separate listing. It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes.
What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t
Same tiers as anywhere, and no stall named. Pierogi are a dough of flour and water whatever the filling, so treat them as containing gluten unless a stall shows you a gluten-free flour. Roasted chestnuts are naturally gluten-free; ask whether the drum is used for anything else. Mulled wine (grzaniec) is wine, sugar and spices by recipe; ask about a ready spice mix. Coffee and pure teas without additives are gluten-free; beer contains gluten. A grilled sausage (kiełbasa) is mostly meat and spices; the roll, the shared grill and any sauce are the real risk, so ask, and take it on a plate.

We don’t yet have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a Warsaw stay, so we don’t name one here.
