Gluten-Free Venice: Dedicated Bakery, Cicchetti and Where to Eat (2026)

Gluten-free Italy/Gluten-free Venice
Gluten-free city guide · the places worth planning around

Gluten-Free Venice

Venice is one of Italy’s harder cities for a coeliac, but it works with a plan. One wholly gluten-free bakery-deli near Rialto — MEA Libera Tutti — anchors your day; several bàcari serve gluten-free cicchetti, so the Venetian ritual is not off-limits; and two AIC-affiliated kitchens cover a proper dinner and a gluten-free pizza. The caveat: most cicchetti are built on bread, and the lagoon is thick with tourist traps — so plan around a shortlist rather than wander.

This is not the whole map. We track far more places in Venice than the 16 below; these are the ones we would plan a day around — the one dedicated, wholly gluten-free address first, then the gluten-free-serving kitchens that make the lagoon workable. Venice is small but confusing, so we have grouped them by meal and pinned the sestieri in Plan your trip. Everything else lives in the Atlas, one link down.

How to read this guide

We publish evidence, not vibes. Every card carries the tier the Atlas holds, the venue’s own stated gluten-free handling, a street address from our records, and the date a person last checked it. The ★ is set only by a person at How to Gluten Free — software never sets it, and a community report never earns it. Our four promises are public at howtoglutenfree.com/what-we-promise.

★ DedicatedAn entirely gluten-free kitchen or shop, with no wheat on site, as the Atlas holds it.
GF-servingA kitchen that also cooks with wheat and offers a gluten-free option. Careful ones — but say the sentence, every time.
AIC · AFC accreditedThe venue’s own claim that it follows the Italian coeliac association’s formal eating-out accreditation (AFC). A strong signal in a mixed kitchen — never a reason to skip the sentence.
AIC networkThe venue’s own statement that it has joined the association’s eating-out project — a signal, not the full accreditation. Check the AFC register, and say the sentence.
Checked by us / Checked online“Checked by us” means a person at HTGF checked the venue. “Checked online · not visited” means a person applied our rule to the venue’s own website or map entry — nobody stood in the room.
01 · BREAKFAST & BAKERIES

Breakfast & bakeries

Start here. Venice’s one wholly gluten-free address is a bakery-deli — MEA Libera Tutti, five minutes from Rialto — so bread, pastries and a picnic to carry are solved without a question. A mixed bakery-café by the Rialto market fills in a quick morning stop.

01

MEA Libera Tutti

★ DedicatedBakery, deli & pantry · takeaway

An entirely gluten-free shop, bakery and deli on Calle del Paradiso, five minutes from the Rialto bridge — bread, pasta, pastries, snacks and prepared food to eat on the move or stock the room. It is the one wholly gluten-free address in the centre of Venice, and the stop every coeliac in the lagoon learns by heart.

The gluten-free angle

An entirely gluten-free shop and deli, as our Atlas holds it — a member of the gluten-free travel community flagged it, and its listings are unequivocal: tutto senza glutine, from the bread and pasta to the pastries and snacks (as our Atlas held it on 8 September 2026; no wheat on the premises). The one place in central Venice you can buy without reading a single label with dread — though it is a shop, not a restaurant.

Order

Bread, pastries and prepared food to carry: a picnic for the day out on the water; certified gluten-free pasta and staples to stock the room if you’re self-catering.

Farini

GF-servingBreakfast & lunch · bakery-café

A bakery-café on the Ruga dei Speziali by the Rialto market — a modern all-day counter of bread, focaccia, pastries and quick lunch plates in the busiest food street in Venice, a breakfast or a mid-morning stop right where you’re already walking.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed bakery-café that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (its own site, read 8 September 2026) — gluten-free options on a mostly-wheat counter, not a dedicated kitchen. A bakery is a flour room, so ask which items are gluten-free and how they are kept and stored apart from the wheat ones.

Order

Ask which pastries or lunch plates are gluten-free and made or stored apart; a coffee and a marked gluten-free item — or carry breakfast from MEA (in this band above) instead.

Watch out

A working bakery counter is full of flour and shared surfaces — say the sentence and keep strictly to the items they confirm as gluten-free and separately stored.

02 · PIZZA

Pizza

Venice is not a gluten-free pizza city, but there is one well-signposted answer: a big pizzeria on the Zattere that has joined the AIC eating-out project and keeps a separate gluten-free kitchen for its doughs — a gluten-free pizza and a spritz with a view across the water.

03

OKE Zattere

GF-servingAIC networkPizza & aperitivo · Neapolitan

A big pizzeria and restaurant right on the Zattere promenade, its tables looking across the water to the Giudecca — pizza, pasta and Venetian plates with a sunset view. This is the place for a gluten-free pizza and a spritz on the fondamenta, the most relaxed evening a coeliac can plan in the centre.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed pizzeria that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen — but a well-signposted one: its own site states it has joined the AIC eating-out project and keeps a separate gluten-free kitchen for its doughs, dishes and desserts. We credit that as an AIC network affiliation (check the AFC register to confirm whether it is the full accreditation); you still say the sentence.

Order

A gluten-free pizza from the separate kitchen, and a spritz on the water; ask that it is made and fired apart from the wheat pizzas.

Watch out

A large wheat pizzeria — say the sentence and confirm your pizza comes from the separate gluten-free kitchen, not the main oven line.

03 · LUNCH & STREET FOOD

Lunch & street food

The Venetian street-food ritual — cicchetti — is built on bread, so the reliable daytime move is a sit-down lunch or a picnic from MEA (in Breakfast & bakeries above). These four central kitchens all keep a gluten-free line; carry MEA’s bread and prepared food for a day out on the water.

04

1000 Gourmet Venezia

GF-servingLunch & dinner · Venetian

A contemporary Venetian kitchen a few steps behind the Basilica, on Calle dei Specchieri — the sit-down restaurant of the Gruppo 1000, which runs a bakery-café alongside it, so a coeliac can plan both a proper meal and a morning stop in one attentive group, a minute from the Piazza.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (its own site, read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen. The Gruppo 1000 markets gluten-free choices across its restaurant and bakery-café; the kitchen still cooks with wheat, so say the sentence and ask how each plate is kept apart.

Order

Ask which of the day’s Venetian plates are made gluten-free; a grilled fish or a naturally gluten-free risotto is lower-risk ground — confirm the stock and the pan.

Watch out

A busy central kitchen that also works with wheat pasta and bread — say the sentence and confirm each plate and its preparation, not just the menu label.

Impronta Restaurant Venice

GF-servingLunch & dinner · modern Italian

A modern all-day bistro near Campo Santa Margherita — an open kitchen doing contemporary Italian cooking from lunch through dinner, well used to coeliac diners and one of the more reliable central sit-downs in Dorsoduro, in the liveliest evening quarter of the city.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (found via a map search and a gluten-free traveller’s account, read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen. A contemporary kitchen that handles gluten-free requests as a matter of course; it still cooks with wheat, so say the sentence and confirm each plate.

Order

Ask which of the day’s plates are made gluten-free; the grilled and naturally gluten-free dishes are lower-risk ground, and confirm any fried item uses a clean pan or a dedicated fryer.

Watch out

An open kitchen that also cooks with wheat pasta and bread — say the sentence and confirm each plate and its preparation.

La Zucca

GF-servingLunch & dinner · vegetable-forward

A much-loved little restaurant by a canal bridge near Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio — famous for cooking that puts seasonal vegetables at the centre (though it isn’t strictly vegetarian), a warm, wood-lined room away from the crowds and a menu with unusually broad naturally gluten-free ground.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen. A vegetable-led menu means many plates are naturally gluten-free, and diners report plenty of choice suitable for coeliacs; it still cooks with wheat pasta and flour, so say the sentence and confirm each plate.

Order

The vegetable-based plates and a naturally gluten-free main; ask which of the day’s dishes are made gluten-free and kept clear of flour and the wheat-pasta water.

Watch out

A small kitchen that also makes wheat pasta and flour-based dishes — say the sentence, book ahead and mention it is for a coeliac, and confirm each plate.

Km0 Venezia Osteria

An osteria on the fondamenta by the Papadopoli gardens, a two-minute walk from Piazzale Roma and the arrival bridges — short-supply-chain Venetian cooking right by the gateway, the natural first meal off the bus or the last before you leave, without a long walk with your bags.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed osteria that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (a member of the gluten-free travel community flagged it; read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen. A small km0 kitchen that will cook around a coeliac; it works with wheat, so say the sentence and confirm each plate.

Order

A grilled fish or meat secondo and a naturally gluten-free risotto; ask which of the day’s plates are made gluten-free and kept apart from the wheat pasta.

Watch out

A small kitchen that also cooks with wheat pasta and bread — say the sentence and confirm each plate and its preparation, especially at a busy arrival-hour service.

04 · DINNER

Dinner

Book ahead and tell them you are coeliac. The best-signposted dinner is Frary’s by the Frari — a Mediterranean kitchen that carries the Italian coeliac association’s formal eating-out accreditation — and four more Venetian kitchens across the sestieri keep a gluten-free line.

08

Frary’s

GF-servingAIC · AFC accreditedLunch & dinner · Mediterranean

A Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern restaurant on the fondamenta beside the Frari — twenty years of Greek, Levantine and southern cooking, and one of the very few Venice kitchens that carries the Italian coeliac association’s formal eating-out accreditation, so a coeliac can plan a proper, varied dinner around it.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen — but a well-signposted one: its own site states aderiamo al programma ufficiale AIC per la somministrazione di piatti senza glutine and names the AIC: alimentazione fuori casa circuit. We credit the AFC badge from its own words; still say the sentence.

Order

Ask for the gluten-free menu; the naturally gluten-free mezze — falafel, grilled meats and vegetables, rice dishes — are the varied lower-risk ground, and confirm anything fried uses a dedicated fryer.

Watch out

A kitchen that also cooks with wheat flatbread and couscous — say the sentence, order from the gluten-free menu, and check the fryer for anything fried.

La Vecia Cavana

GF-servingDinner · Venetian & seafood

A long-standing Venetian restaurant off the Strada Nova near Santi Apostoli — fish, lagoon cooking and a handsome old boat-shed dining room, one of the Cannaregio kitchens with a real record of feeding coeliacs, so you can plan a proper Venetian dinner around it.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving with a stated protocol (read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen. It comes up in the coeliac directories and shows the Italian coeliac association’s logo on its own site, but with no accreditation wording, so we credit no chip and you say the sentence; check the AIC register or confirm in person before you rely on it.

Order

Ask for the gluten-free options and a grilled or baked fish secondo; risotto and naturally gluten-free lagoon dishes are lower-risk ground — confirm the stock and the pan.

Watch out

A kitchen that also cooks with wheat pasta and fried starters — say the sentence, confirm each plate, and check the fryer for anything fried.

GF-servingDinner · modern Venetian

A small modern-Venetian kitchen on Via Garibaldi, the wide market street near the Biennale gardens — a short, careful menu of lagoon and seasonal cooking in the most local corner of Castello, a dinner well away from the tourist churn behind San Marco.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (a member of the gluten-free travel community flagged it; read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen. A small, hands-on kitchen that will cook around a coeliac when asked; it works with wheat, so say the sentence and confirm each plate.

Order

Tell the kitchen you’re coeliac when you book; ask which of the day’s plates can be made gluten-free — a grilled fish or a risotto is lower-risk ground.

Watch out

Ristorante Ai Cesendeli

GF-servingDinner · Venetian & pizza

A neighbourhood restaurant and pizzeria on a quiet fondamenta near La Fenice — named for the cesendeli, the old Venetian lanterns — doing Venetian classics and pizza a short walk from the opera house, a calmer dinner in the middle of the tourist zone.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (a member of the gluten-free travel community flagged it; read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen, listed with gluten-free choices including pizza. The room cooks with wheat, so say the sentence and ask how the gluten-free plates and any pizza are kept apart.

Order

A Venetian fish or meat secondo, or a gluten-free pizza made and fired apart from the wheat ones; confirm the separate base, peel and prep.

Al Giardinetto da Severino

GF-servingLunch & dinner · Venetian

A grand old Venetian restaurant behind San Marco, open since 1949, with a courtyard garden under a pergola off Ruga Giuffa — traditional lagoon cooking in a room that has been feeding travellers for three generations, and one that keeps a gluten-free section on its menu.

The gluten-free angle

On the evidence we read, this is a long-running mixed Venetian restaurant that keeps a Senza Glutine menu section — not a verifiably dedicated kitchen — so we hold it as gluten-free-serving (found via a map search and checked against its own site, read 8 September 2026). It shows the coeliac association’s logo without accreditation wording, so we credit no chip; say the sentence and confirm the handling.

Order

Order from the gluten-free section; a grilled or baked fish and a naturally gluten-free risotto are lower-risk ground — confirm the stock, the pan and any fried starter.

05 · GELATO & SWEET THINGS

Gelato & sweet things

One serious modern gelateria between Rialto and San Marco, used to the question. It is a mixed counter, not a dedicated one — take a cup, ask for a fresh scoop, and order by flavour.

13

Suso

GF-servingGelato

One of Venice’s serious modern gelaterie, tucked in a sotoportego between Rialto and San Marco — small-batch gelato with a following, the sweet stop on the walk across the busiest stretch of the city, open late into the evening.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed gelateria that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (found via a map search and checked against its listing, read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated counter. Most artisan gelato is naturally gluten-free, but a busy shared counter keeps wafer cones and biscuit-based flavours, so take a cup and confirm the flavour.

Order

A cup, not a cone; ask which flavours are gluten-free and request a fresh scoop and spoon from a clean tub.

Watch out

A busy mixed counter shares scoops between tubs and keeps wheat cones and biscuit toppings — say the sentence, take a cup, and confirm the flavour is one they keep gluten-free.

06 · APERITIVO & THE EVENING

Aperitivo & the evening

This is the Venetian ritual a coeliac usually watches from the side: the bàcaro, an ombra of wine and a plate of cicchetti at the end of the day. Most cicchetti are built on bread and shared boards, so the gluten-free ones are a subset — the polenta- and fish-based small plates, away from the crostini. These three bàcari confirm gluten-free choices, so you can take part; say the sentence and keep to what they confirm.

14

Osteria Barababao

GF-servingAperitivo & dinner · cicchetti

A modern osteria and bàcaro near Santi Apostoli — cicchetti and small plates over an ombra of wine, then a sit-down dinner of Venetian dishes: the place to join the cicchetti ritual, the Venetian aperitivo a coeliac usually has to watch from the side, keeping to the cicchetti they confirm gluten-free.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed osteria that our Atlas holds as gluten-free-serving (its own site, read 8 September 2026) — a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen. Cicchetti are mostly built on bread and polenta, so the gluten-free ones are a subset: say the sentence and ask which small plates and which secondi are gluten-free and kept apart.

Order

Ask which cicchetti are gluten-free — the polenta- and fish-based ones are the natural ground, away from the crostini; then a gluten-free secondo.

07 · Plan your trip

Plan your trip

Where to base yourself

  • Castello & San Marco — the centre: the dedicated MEA Libera Tutti shop (5 min from Rialto), 1000 Gourmet behind the Basilica, Suso gelato and a calmer dinner at Ai Cesendeli near La Fenice.
  • Cannaregio — the northern, lived-in sestiere and a great bàcaro strip: a Venetian dinner at La Vecia Cavana and the cicchetti at Osteria Barababao.
  • Dorsoduro — the liveliest evening quarter, and the best cluster in this guide: Impronta near Campo Santa Margherita, gluten-free pizza on the water at OKE Zattere, and the Bakarò bàcaro on the campo.
  • San Polo — around the Rialto market and the Frari: the AFC-accredited Frary’s, the historic Ostaria Antico Dolo, and the Farini bakery-café for the morning.
  • Santa Croce — the gateway by Piazzale Roma: La Zucca near Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio, and Km0 for the first or last meal by the bridges.

Gluten-free-aware stays

We do not yet hold a Venice stay with a documented gluten-free breakfast in our records, so we name none here rather than guess. The reliable model is a room with a fridge plus a dedicated stop from this guide.

For self-catering, stock the room from MEA Libera Tutti — bread, pasta, pastries and prepared food, all wholly gluten-free — and carry a picnic for the days you are out on the water, where dedicated options run out. Pharmacies (farmacie) carry certified staples too.

The one sentence to say

Say it before ordering, every time — dedicated kitchen or not.

Sono celiaco/a. Non posso mangiare glutine e devo evitare anche la contaminazione con farina di grano, pane, pasta, pizza, briciole e olio di frittura condiviso.

I have coeliac disease. I cannot eat gluten, and I also need to avoid cross-contact with wheat flour, bread, pasta, pizza, crumbs and shared frying oil.

Get the full Italian dining card with the follow-up questions →

Two more that go a long way: La cucina è interamente senza glutine? — “Is the kitchen entirely gluten-free?” — and birra senza glutine when you want a beer, since most Italian lagers are barley.

Good to know

  • “Senza glutine” means ≤ 20 mg/kg (20 ppm) — the EU and Codex threshold. A label that says it, means it.
  • Cicchetti are built on bread. The Venetian small-plates ritual runs on crostini and shared boards, so most of it is off-limits — but the polenta- and fish-based cicchetti (baccalà mantecato, sardines, polpette) are the natural ground. Ask which the bàcaro keeps gluten-free, away from the crostini. More on this in whether coeliacs can eat bread in Italy.
  • The tourist-trap caveat. The calli behind San Marco and along the main routes are dense with tourist-menu restaurants that will say yes to anything — Venice is where an unplanned meal is most likely to go wrong. Plan around this shortlist, book dinner ahead, and carry a picnic from MEA for the days you are out on the water.
  • AIC and AFC are strong signals, not guarantees. A venue in the Italian coeliac association’s eating-out programme (AFC) follows documented cross-contact procedures — worth knowing in a mixed kitchen, and never a reason to skip the sentence. We credit a badge only from the venue’s own claim; a bare logo without accreditation wording earns none.
  • Gelato is mostly naturally gluten-free, but the cones, the biscuit inclusions and a shared scoop are the trap — keep to a cup, ask for a fresh spoon, and check the flavour.
  • Getting around. Venice is walkable but a maze — pin every place before you go, because signal and street numbers both fail you. The vaporetto covers the Grand Canal and the islands (Murano, Burano, Torcello); pack food from MEA for a day on the water.
  • New to gluten-free travel? Start with our gluten-free 101 and how cross-contact works before you go.
