Is tequila gluten-free? Yes, check flavoured and pre-mixed drinks

Yes. Tequila is gluten-free. It is distilled from the blue agave plant. Coeliac UK lists distilled spirits as gluten-free.

What to check

• “100% agave” tequila is made from agave sugars only. “Mixto” tequila may add other sugars (up to 49%), and it is still distilled.
• Flavoured tequilas, cream liqueurs and ready-made margarita mixes can have added ingredients. Read the label.
• Beer-based cocktails (a michelada, for example) contain gluten unless the beer is gluten-free.
