Usually, yes, for plain flavours. Milk, cream, sugar, eggs and most flavourings contain no gluten. The risk is what gets mixed in, served with it or scooped next to it.

What to check

  • Mix-ins: cookies and cream, cookie dough, brownie, cheesecake with a biscuit base and “crunch” flavours contain wheat.
  • Malt flavours: malted milk and “malt” ice cream contain barley malt.
  • Cones and wafers are wheat unless labelled gluten-free.
  • Tubs at home: read the ingredient list; wheat and barley are named in the EU and UK.
