Is hummus gluten-free? Yes, it’s what comes with it
Yes. Hummus is gluten-free. It’s chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), lemon juice, garlic, olive oil and salt. Shop-bought hummus is usually just as simple, though flavoured versions are worth a glance at the label.
What to check
- What it’s served with: pitta, flatbread and crackers are wheat. Ask for vegetables, or bring gluten-free bread.
- Toppings: fried chickpeas, crispy onions or bread croutons on top.
- Shared bowls: a dip that people have been scooping with pitta has crumbs in it.
- Mezze plates: falafel is often fried in shared oil, and some falafel mixes contain flour.
