Is gnocchi gluten-free? Usually not, most gnocchi contain wheat flour
Usually not. Potato gnocchi are made from potato and wheat flour, so ordinary gnocchi contain gluten. Gnocchi alla romana are made from semolina, which is durum wheat.
Gluten-free gnocchi
They exist: made with potato and rice flour, corn starch or other gluten-free flours, and labelled gluten-free. At home they’re easy to make with a gluten-free flour blend.
Eating out
In Italy, some restaurants offer gluten-free gnocchi. Ask whether they’re cooked in fresh water rather than the pasta pot, and whether the sauce contains flour.
