Gluten-free at the York Christmas Market
The short answer
York Christmas Market lines Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square with Alpine chalets, in the middle of the old city. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, coffee or a pure tea. Waffles, crΓͺpes and most baked and battered stall food are wheat. We haven’t walked this market yet. Two things to plan around: the market is closed every Tuesday, and Pig & Potato, a dedicated gluten-free restaurant and bar about 5 minutes away, is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

This season’s market
York Christmas Market runs from Thursday 12 November to Monday 21 December 2026, Wednesday to Monday, as Make It York prints it. It’s closed every Tuesday for a weekly rest day, a trial this year. It’s open 10:30 to 19:00, except on Monday 21 December, the last day, when it’s open 10:30 to 17:00. Alpine chalets line Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square. Check the official page before you go. It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes.
Getting there: York station is about 15 minutes on foot from Parliament Street (our estimate). The organiser recommends local buses, and York Park & Ride has free parking at six sites with frequent electric buses into the centre. Shopmobility York, on the top floor of Piccadilly Car Park, hires out mobility scooters, powerchairs and wheelchairs and opens on Sundays for the Christmas markets (Visit York).

What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t
The same tiers apply here as anywhere, and no stall named. Roasted chestnuts, mulled wine in your mug, and coffee or a pure tea are gluten-free by their nature, if they’re served without cross-contact. Roasted almonds are ask-first: sugar, almonds and cinnamon only, or something added after roasting, and are they open beside other sweets? Waffles, crΓͺpes and doughnuts need their own labelled flour and a clean iron or fryer to be genuinely gluten-free, and most aren’t. A plain grilled sausage or burger patty taken off its roll, with the marinade and the grill asked about first, is the reasonable order. We haven’t sourced a UK trade definition of the sausage the way we have for Germany’s Bratwurst, so ask rather than assume.

Where to eat a real gluten-free meal in York
We mark each place by how we know it: a genuinely dedicated kitchen, or a listing we haven’t checked yet. Except at Pig & Potato, always tell them you have coeliac disease and confirm how they handle it on the day.
The numbered pin matches the numbered place below. The places we haven’t checked yet aren’t pinned.

Getting there and staying
From the airport: from Leeds Bradford Airport, take the FLYER bus to Leeds station, then the train to York. The airport’s buses run daily from about 06:00 to about 22:00, and you can buy through bus-and-rail tickets (Leeds Bradford Airport). Leeds to York takes around 25 minutes by train, and Manchester to York around 90 minutes (Visit York).
By train: York station has step-free access to all platforms, and the platforms are level with the main entrance (National Rail).
The first weekend: on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November, engineering work affects trains between Leeds and York. TransPennine Express diverts its trains via Castleford, with rail replacement buses where that isn’t possible, and Northern’s Leeds to York service via Micklefield won’t run (TransPennine Express).
Park & Ride and driving: Park & Ride buses are low-floor and wheelchair-accessible. The car park gates normally lock 15 minutes after the last bus, and a Β£50 release fee applies if your car is locked in (iTravel York). On Tuesdays, when the stalls are closed, the Goodramgate, King’s Square and Colliergate loop is open to Blue Badge holders; on market days vehicles are restricted in the footstreets (Make It York).
Prices and timetables as printed on 1 October 2026; check them before you travel.
Staying: We don’t yet have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a York stay, so we don’t name one here.
FAQ
What can I eat at the York Christmas Market if I’m coeliac?
The reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, coffee or a pure tea. Waffles, crΓͺpes and most stall food are wheat, so ask before anything fried or battered.
Are there dedicated gluten-free places in York?
Yes. Pig & Potato, about 5 minutes on foot from the market, says on its own site that its entire menu is 100% gluten-free. It’s closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Is the York Christmas Market open every day?
No. In 2026 it’s open Wednesday to Monday, from Thursday 12 November to Monday 21 December, and closed every Tuesday. Pig & Potato is closed on Tuesdays too, so a Tuesday visit gets you neither.
Is mulled wine gluten-free?
By recipe, mulled wine is wine, sugar and spices. Ask about a ready spice mix before you assume.
