London Β· gluten-free bakeries

London has 6 bakeries we rate as dedicated gluten-free kitchens (β˜…), from croissants in Notting Hill and Covent Garden to tarts in Kensington and baguettes in Chiswick, and 2 more that sell gluten-free bakes (◐). Several open only on certain days or work by order, so check the card before you go. A further 3 are listed by a directory or an online map listing, and we haven’t checked them yet.

How gluten-free bakeries work in London

London’s dedicated gluten-free bakeries are spread out, and several are small kitchens rather than shops: some open only a few days a week, some sell through collection, a market stall or a Saturday opening. Check the day before you cross town.

In the UK, “gluten-free” on food means 20 parts per million or less. Some gluten-free bakes use gluten-free wheat starch, wheat starch processed to remove the gluten, and some use oats; if you avoid either, ask. Where a bakery holds Coeliac UK’s accreditation, we show it only when its own site says so.

At the counter, ask three things. Is everything here gluten-free, or only some bakes? Is it baked here, in your own kitchen? And in a mixed bakery: how are the gluten-free bakes kept and served apart?

Questions

Are gluten-free bakeries in London safe for coeliacs?

It depends on the kitchen, not the city. We rate the 6 β˜… bakeries on this page as dedicated gluten-free kitchens, and each card quotes what they say themselves, such as Dendara’s “We do not have any gluten on site”. In a mixed bakery, ask where the gluten-free bakes are made. Always say you have coeliac disease.

Where can I get gluten-free croissants in London?

At Libby’s in Notting Hill, at Copains on Neal Street in Covent Garden, and from Manna Dew in Battersea, which sells by collection and at a Friday afternoon bake sale.

Which gluten-free bakeries in London open at weekends?

Libby’s in Notting Hill opens on Saturdays and Sundays; Dendara in Kensington and Ma Ma Boutique Bakery in Chiswick open from Wednesday to Sunday; Vida Bakery in East London opens on Saturdays; The Free From Bakehouse stall at Borough Market trades Tuesday to Sunday.

What is gluten-free wheat starch?

Wheat starch processed to remove the gluten so that the food stays within the gluten-free limit of 20 parts per million. Libby’s uses it in some bakes and says on its own site that a small number of people with coeliac disease choose to avoid it.
