Are Corn Flakes gluten-free? Standard Kellogg’s aren’t, look for a GF label
Standard Kellogg’s Corn Flakes are not gluten-free. Corn is naturally gluten-free, but the standard recipe adds barley malt for flavour.
What the packs say, by country
- UK: maize, barley malt extract, sugar, salt.
- Germany: Mais, Gerstenmalz (barley malt), Zucker, Salz.
- Italy: mais, estratto di malto d’orzo (barley malt extract), zucchero, sale.
- US: the ingredient list includes malt flavor, and the product is not labelled gluten-free.
- Australia: Kellogg’s sells a separate product, Corn Flakes Gluten Free, made without malt.
What to do
Many supermarkets and gluten-free brands sell corn flakes made without malt and labelled gluten-free. That label is the thing to look for, because “corn” in the name tells you nothing about the malt.
