Are Rice Krispies gluten-free? No, they contain malt

• UK: rice flour, sugar, barley malt extract and wheat gluten.
• Italy: rice flour, sugar, barley malt extract (estratto di malto d’orzo) and wheat gluten.
• US: the ingredient list includes malt flavor, and the product is not labelled gluten-free. Malt flavouring is usually made from barley.

What to know

• Rice Krispies Treats bars are made with the same cereal, so they are not gluten-free either.
• Homemade marshmallow squares: use a crisped rice cereal labelled gluten-free, and check the marshmallows.
• Kellogg’s has sold gluten-free cereals in some countries. Only a pack that says gluten-free counts.
