Is soy gluten-free? Soybeans are, soy sauce usually isn’t
Soybeans are naturally gluten-free, and so are plain tofu, edamame and most soy milk.
What to check
- Soy sauce: most soy sauce is brewed with wheat. Look for tamari or a soy sauce labelled gluten-free.
- Marinated and flavoured soy products: marinades often contain soy sauce. Read the label.
- Soy flour and textured soy protein: usually fine, but check for cross-contact on the pack.
- “Soy” in an ingredient list means soybeans; “soy sauce” is the one to watch.
