Is millet gluten-free? Yes, buy it labelled gluten-free
Yes. Millet is naturally gluten-free. Pearl millet, finger millet (ragi), foxtail millet and proso millet all belong to the grass family without containing gluten.
What to check
Millet is often grown, transported and milled alongside wheat and barley, so plain millet grain and especially millet flour can pick up gluten. Choose millet labelled gluten-free (20 mg/kg or less).
Where you’ll meet it
- Porridge and flatbreads, including Indian bajra (pearl millet) and ragi (finger millet) rotis. In a restaurant, ask whether the dough is mixed with wheat flour.
- Gluten-free bread and beer: millet is one of the grains many gluten-free breweries use.
