Gluten-free at the Wrocław Christmas market: what you can actually eat

UPDATED=2026-09-25READ=4 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

The short answer

WrocÅ‚aw’s Christmas market fills the Rynek, Plac Solny and the streets between them from late November into January. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, mulled wine in your mug, coffee or a pure tea. Pierogi are a flour dough and oscypek comes off a shared pan, so both need a question first. The good news is in the city itself: two dedicated gluten-free bakeries we’ve checked against their own pages.

New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market

This season’s market

The WrocÅ‚aw Christmas Market (Jarmark Bożonarodzeniowy) runs from 20 November 2026 to 7 January 2027. Opening hours, as the organiser prints them: daily 10:00 to 21:00. It’s closed on 24 and 25 December and on 1 January. On 26 December it opens at 13:00. On 31 December the stalls selling goods close at 17:00, while food and drinks stay open until 02:00 on 1 January. Official page: jarmarkbozonarodzeniowy.com.

The organiser lists the market on all four sides of the Rynek, on ul. Åšwidnicka and ul. OÅ‚awska, and on Plac Solny. It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes.

What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t

Same tiers as anywhere, and no stall named. Roasted chestnuts are naturally gluten-free. By recipe, mulled wine (grzaniec) is wine, sugar and spices; ask only whether a ready spice mix goes in. Coffee and pure teas without additives are gluten-free; with flavoured ones, check.

Pierogi, sold at stall after stall, are a dough of flour and water whatever the filling. Unless a stall can show you labelled gluten-free flour and its own pot, treat them as containing gluten. Oscypek is a smoked cheese made from salted sheep’s milk, with no flour in the recipe. It’s often pan-fried and served with cranberry jam, so ask what else goes in that pan and what’s in the jam. A grilled sausage (kieÅ‚basa) usually comes with bread that contains gluten, often off a shared grill, and gluten can also hide in a sausage’s spice mix. Ask first, and take it on a plate.

Getting there and staying

WrocÅ‚aw links by train with both Kraków and Warsaw, so it fits into a longer Christmas trip through Poland. We don’t yet have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a WrocÅ‚aw stay, so we don’t name one here. The two dedicated bakeries above are the easier start to the day.

FAQ

What can I eat at the WrocÅ‚aw Christmas market if I’m coeliac?
The reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, coffee or a pure tea. Pierogi are a flour dough, so treat them as containing gluten. Ask before anything grilled or fried.

Are there dedicated gluten-free places in Wrocław?
Yes. Piekarnia Zdrowe Bezglutenowe and WOLNA are dedicated gluten-free bakeries we’ve checked against their own pages.

Is oscypek gluten-free?
The cheese itself is salted sheep’s milk, smoked, with no flour in the recipe. At a stall it’s often pan-fried and served with cranberry jam, so ask about the pan and the jam.

Is mulled wine (grzaniec) gluten-free?
By recipe, mulled wine is wine, sugar and spices. Ask about a ready spice mix before you assume.
