Gluten-free at the Prague Christmas market: what you can actually eat

UPDATED=2026-09-24READ=5 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

The short answer

Prague’s big Christmas market fills Old Town Square, and the same organiser runs a second one on Wenceslas Square. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, mulled wine in your mug, coffee or a pure tea. Trdelník, the pastry turning on a spit at stall after stall, is a yeast dough and not gluten-free. The good news is Prague itself: several dedicated gluten-free bakeries, cafés and restaurants we’ve checked, so you can eat a proper meal around the market instead of snacking through it.

New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market

This season’s market

The Old Town Square Christmas market (Staroměstské náměstí) runs from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, 10:00 to 22:00, as the organiser prints it. The Wenceslas Square market (Václavské náměstí) has the same dates and hours. Both are run by Taiko. Official page: trhypraha.cz.

It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes: a market stall is a food business, and asking what’s in the food is your right.

What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t

Same tiers as anywhere, and no stall named. Roasted chestnuts are naturally gluten-free. By recipe, mulled wine (svařák) is wine, sugar and spices; ask only whether a ready spice mix goes in. Coffee and pure teas without additives are gluten-free; with flavoured ones, check.

Trdelník is a yeast dough wound around a stick, baked and rolled in sugar. The protected Slovak original, Skalický trdelník, lists wheat flour first. It looks like a plain sweet, which is exactly why it catches people out: treat it as wheat. Langoš, the fried flatbread, is made from a white-bread yeast dough, so it’s wheat too. A grilled sausage (klobása) usually comes with bread that contains gluten, often off a shared grill, and gluten can also hide in a sausage’s spice mix. Ask first, and take it on a plate. Popcorn is gluten-free only if nothing with gluten goes into the machine, and roasted almonds or other sweets on an open counter next to pastries can pick up crumbs. Ask first, and prefer packed.

Getting there and staying

Prague is well connected by air and rail across Europe. We don’t yet have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a Prague stay, so we don’t name one here. Until we do, breakfast at one of the dedicated bakeries or cafés above is the easier plan than negotiating at a hotel buffet.

FAQ

What can I eat at the Prague Christmas market if I’m coeliac?
The reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, coffee or a pure tea. Trdelník and langoš are wheat doughs. For a grilled sausage, ask about the bread, the grill and the spice mix, and take it on a plate.

Is trdelník gluten-free?
No. It’s a yeast dough baked on a spit and rolled in sugar, and the protected original recipe starts with wheat flour. It looks like a plain sweet, which is why it catches people out.

Are there dedicated gluten-free places in Prague?
Yes, several. Bassotto, Arepas De Lyna, U Vojtěcha, Restaurace U Agamy, Cukrárna Klárka and Cukrárna Buchta are dedicated gluten-free places we’ve checked. More are listed as dedicated but not yet checked by us.

Is mulled wine (svařák) gluten-free?
By recipe, mulled wine is wine, sugar and spices. Ask about a ready spice mix before you assume.
