Gluten-free at the Merano Christmas market (Meran)

UPDATED=2026-09-24READ=5 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

The short answer

Merano, Meran in German, strings its Christmas market along the Passer promenade and into Piazza Terme. South Tyrol is bilingual, so you can ask in Italian or German. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts and the drink in your mug. Most of the regional stall food, from barley soup to Knödel, Tirtlan and Strudel, is barley, wheat or rye. The real win is in town: FIABA, a 100% gluten-free bakery and shop.

New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market

This season’s market

The Mercatini di Natale di Merano / Meraner Weihnacht run from 26 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, as the organiser prints it. Opening hours, as the organiser prints them: Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 19:00, Friday, Saturday and public holidays (26 December and 1 January) 10:00 to 20:00, Sunday 10:00 to 19:00. The food stalls stay open later. The market is closed on 25 December and has shorter hours on 24 and 31 December and 6 January. Official page: merano-suedtirol.it.

The organiser places the market on the Passeggiata Lungo Passirio and Piazza Terme, with more spots from Piazza della Rena and its Christmas village to the Passeggiata d’Inverno, Piazza Duomo and Piazza del Grano. Its page has no gluten-free or allergen information, so treat this as a mixed market, the way the hub describes: a market is a food business, and asking what’s in the food, and what else touches it, is your right.

What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t

Same tiers as anywhere, and no stall named. Roasted chestnuts (caldarroste, Kastanien) are gluten-free by nature; ask whether the roasting drum is used for anything else. Vin brulé / Glühwein is wine, sugar and spices, and coffee and pure teas carry no gluten ingredient, handling permitting. Ask only about a ready spice or punch mix.

The South Tyrolean line-up is mostly off the list. Barley soup (Gerstsuppe, zuppa d’orzo) is barley by name, and Knödel (canederli), Tirtlan and Strudel are usually wheat or rye doughs. Strauben are a flour batter, and Krapfen are wheat bakes. Candied almonds are ask-first: ask whether anything is dusted on after roasting. A plain grilled sausage can work taken off the roll and put on a plate. The roll is wheat and the grill is shared, so ask what’s in the sausage and what else goes on the grill.

The three questions to ask a stall

Where to stay

Gluten-free options, read against the venue’s own info

  • Hotel Weiss, Via della Val Venosta 38, Rablà (Rabland), Parcines, just outside Merano. Its own site says it is certified by the Italian coeliac association and serves gluten-free bread from Dr. Schär plus at least two kinds of house-made gluten-free bread at breakfast. Confirm the gluten-free breakfast, and that the hotel is open on your dates, when you book.

Combine it with Bolzano and Bressanone

Base yourself in Bolzano and make Merano a day, or stay near Merano and do the trip the other way round.

  • Bolzano (Bozen), the Waltherplatz market, with a dedicated gluten-free pizzeria, a gelateria and a 100% gluten-free shop in town.
  • Bressanone (Brixen), the cathedral-square market, with an entirely gluten-free gelateria in the old town.
