Gluten-free at the Craiova Christmas market: what you can eat
The short answer
Craiova’s Christmas market is run by the city hall, and this year’s theme is “TΔrΓ’mul elfilor” (Land of the Elves). At the stalls, the things you can most rely on are the whole ones: roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, coffee or a pure tea. Covrigi are a bread made from flour and water, so they aren’t gluten-free. Sarmale have no flour in the traditional recipe, but ask about the cooking liquid.
We haven’t walked this market yet, and we don’t have a checked gluten-free place in Craiova on our map. We’d rather say that plainly. This page grows as soon as we or a reader can confirm somewhere.
New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market
This season’s market
Craiova’s TΓ’rgul de CrΔciun is organised by the city hall (PrimΔria Municipiului Craiova). As the organiser prints it, the 2026 market runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 in the city centre, with stalls open Monday to Thursday 13:00 to 21:00 and Friday to Sunday 10:00 to 22:00. The market is spread across three areas: PiaΘa Mihai Viteazul and Strada Unirii; PiaΘa William Shakespeare, PiaΘa FraΘii BuzeΘti and the Doljana area; and PiaΘa Ierusalim and Strada Theodor Aman.
Official page: primariacraiova.ro (in Romanian). It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes.
What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t
No stall is named here. This is the treats logic, not a review.
Covrigi, the ring-shaped breads you’ll see everywhere, are made from flour and water with poppy seeds, sesame or coarse salt on top. They are not gluten-free, whatever the topping. Sarmale, cabbage leaves rolled around minced pork and rice, have no flour in the traditional recipe. The cooking liquid, any thickener and how the pot is kept warm can vary, so ask first.
Roasted chestnuts are naturally gluten-free. Mulled wine (vin fiert) is wine heated with sugar and spices, and the EU’s legal definition of mulled wine allows no gluten-containing ingredient, so ask only about a ready spice mix. Coffee and pure teas without flavourings are gluten-free.
A grilled sausage (mici, cΓ’rnaΘi) comes with the usual market risks: the bread it’s served with, a shared grill and any sauce. Ask what’s in it and take it on a plate, without the bread. The city’s list of allowed products includes packaged cozonac, biscuits, cakes and gingerbread. Read the label: only a “fΔrΔ gluten” (gluten-free) label counts, and under EU law that means no more than 20 mg of gluten per kg.

Getting there and staying
Craiova can be reached by road and rail from Bucharest; check the current timetable before you plan the day. We don’t have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a Craiova stay, and with no checked place to eat in the city yet, plan your own food: a room with a small kitchen, or labelled gluten-free staples in your bag.
