Is Worcestershire sauce gluten-free? It depends on the vinegar
It depends on the recipe. Worcestershire sauce is made from vinegar, molasses, anchovies, tamarind, onion and spices. The question is the vinegar: many versions, especially traditional British ones, use malt vinegar made from barley; others use spirit or distilled vinegar.
What to check
- The label: “malt vinegar” or “barley malt vinegar” means barley. Coeliac UK’s guidance is that malt vinegar is suitable only when the product is labelled gluten-free.
- The same brand can differ by country, so read the bottle in front of you, not the one at home.
- In dishes: Worcestershire sauce hides in Caesar dressing, Bloody Marys, marinades, burgers, gravies and some barbecue sauces. Ask.
