Is caramel gluten-free? Usually, check malt and biscuit
Usually, yes. Caramel is cooked sugar, often with butter and cream.
What to check
- Caramel sweets and bars can contain barley malt, wafers or biscuit. Read the label.
- Caramel sauces: usually fine; check any malt or thickener.
- Caramel colour (E150) on a label is a colouring, and it’s gluten-free.
