Gluten-free fish and chips in Whitby: 3 places
This guide is now part of Gluten-free fish and chips in the UK β

Whitby Β· gluten-free fish and chips
3 fish and chip restaurants in Whitby say on their own websites that they offer gluten-free fish and chips or gluten-free options (β). None of them says there that it has a fryer used only for gluten-free food, so ask about the oil before you order. Two more places are listed by a directory or an online map listing, and we haven’t checked them yet. Updated October 2026.
How gluten-free fish and chips works in Whitby
Whitby’s fish and chip restaurants sit around the harbour, on both sides of the Swing Bridge. The 3 places on this page say on their own websites that they offer gluten-free fish and chips or gluten-free options, and each card quotes them. None of them says on its site that it uses a fryer only for gluten-free food, so the oil is the thing to ask about.
Coeliac UK’s advice on takeaways: chips, or fish in gluten-free batter, are not gluten-free if they’re fried in the same oil as battered food with gluten. Ask about the oil for the chips too, because shops often rotate it. Taking the batter off battered fish doesn’t help, because the fish has already picked up gluten. The NHS lists fish as naturally gluten-free, but not breaded or battered fish.
So ask three things when you order. Is the batter gluten-free? Do the gluten-free fish and the chips go into oil that never sees battered food? And is there a gluten-free night or a dedicated gluten-free fryer? Coeliac UK says some shops have one or the other. In the UK, βgluten-freeβ on a menu means 20 parts per million or less, also for food that isn’t prepacked. Coeliac UK’s Gluten Free Accreditation goes to venues that follow its standards, processes and training; we show it on a card only when the venue’s own site says so.

Questions
Is fish and chips in Whitby gluten-free?
Not as standard: the NHS lists fish as naturally gluten-free, but not battered fish. The 3 places on this page say on their own websites that they offer gluten-free fish and chips or gluten-free options. Ask for it clearly when you order.
Is gluten-free fish and chips in Whitby safe for coeliacs?
It depends on the oil, not the town. Coeliac UK says chips, or fish in gluten-free batter, are not gluten-free if they’re fried in the same oil as battered food with gluten. None of the 3 places on this page says on its website that it has a fryer used only for gluten-free food, so ask about the oil for the fish and the chips, and say you have coeliac disease.
Which chippies in Whitby have a separate gluten-free fryer?
None of the 3 places on this page says so on its website (read in October 2026). Coeliac UK notes that some shops run gluten-free nights or keep a dedicated gluten-free fryer, so it’s worth asking each one.
Where can I get gluten-free fish and chips to take away in Whitby?
Quayside on Pier Road says it can offer gluten-free fish and chips in the restaurant and the takeaway, but not as standard, so talk it through before you order. Trenchers by the station has a takeaway menu too and says gluten-free options are available.
