Manchester Β· gluten-free Chinese

6 Chinese restaurants in and around Manchester say on their own websites that they have a gluten-free menu or gluten-free options (◐). 4 of them describe how they keep it apart: a separate fryer, separate oil or separate woks. None says it is a fully gluten-free kitchen, so order from the gluten-free menu and say you have coeliac disease. Updated October 2026.

How gluten-free Chinese food works in Manchester

The places on this page are spread across Greater Manchester: one in the Northern Quarter in the city centre, the others in Altrincham, Whitefield, Cheadle Hulme, Hazel Grove and Astley. All of them have a regular menu as well as a gluten-free menu or gluten-free options. 4 describe on their own sites how they keep gluten-free food apart, and each card quotes them.

Coeliac UK’s advice for Chinese food: avoid wheat noodles and soy sauce, and watch out for dishes with gluten cooked in the same pan as yours. Rice is gluten-free and rice noodles are a good swap, but check they aren’t cooked in soy sauce or in oil used to fry spring rolls.

So ask three things when you order. Which soy sauce goes into the gluten-free dishes? Are they cooked in a clean wok or pan? And does anything fried for you go into oil that never sees battered food or spring rolls? In the UK, β€œgluten-free” on a menu means 20 parts per million or less, also for food that isn’t prepacked. Coeliac UK’s Gluten Free Accreditation goes to venues that follow its standards, processes and training; we show it on a card only when the venue’s own site says so.

Questions

Is Chinese food gluten-free?

Not by default. Coeliac UK lists wheat noodles and soy sauce among the things to avoid, and dishes can pick up gluten from a shared pan or from oil used for spring rolls. Plain rice is gluten-free. The 6 places on this page have gluten-free menus or options, in their own words.

Is gluten-free Chinese food in Manchester safe for coeliacs?

It depends on each kitchen. 4 of the 6 places on this page say on their own websites that they fry or cook gluten-free dishes separately, and Ming’s also writes that it can’t guarantee zero cross-contamination because it’s one kitchen. None says it is fully gluten-free, so say you have coeliac disease every time you order.

Which Chinese restaurants in Manchester have a separate gluten-free fryer?

Sweet Mandarin in the Northern Quarter and PhatChows in Altrincham say so on their own websites. Ming’s in Whitefield says gluten-free orders are fried in separate oil when needed, and Rainbow88 in Cheadle Hulme says its gluten-free food is deep fried separately.

Can I get a gluten-free Chinese takeaway in Manchester?

Several of these places do takeaway: PhatChows offers collection and delivery, Sweet Mandarin does takeaway and Rainbow88 has a takeaway menu. Ask for the gluten-free menu and say it’s for someone with coeliac disease.
