Gluten-free at the supermarket in Germany: chains, own brands and what to read on the pack

UPDATED=2026-10-14READ=17 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

Gluten-free shopping in Germany is easiest at dm, Alnatura and REWE, which show the most gluten-free products under one brand on their own websites: on 14 October 2026 dm’s own brand dmBio listed 370 products on its gluten-free page, Alnatura said the Alnavit brand it sells is always gluten-free (more than 70 products), and REWE’s own line REWE frei von had 26 gluten-free products. EDEKA, Rossmann, Kaufland and ALDI also sell own-brand packs labelled glutenfrei; in all we read 45 products labelled glutenfrei on 7 chains’ own websites. On the pack, look for the word glutenfrei or the crossed-grain symbol, then read the ingredient list, where wheat (Weizen), spelt (Dinkel), barley (Gerste), rye (Roggen) and oats (Hafer) must be highlighted.

How we checked this page: on 14 October 2026 we read each chain’s own website: its gluten-free range page and, for every product named here, its product page, where we looked for the word glutenfrei. Where a site needs a full browser we read it in one. We also read the EU labelling rules on EUR-Lex and the German Coeliac Society’s (DZG) page for visitors. This page is about sealed, labelled packs only. Ranges change and differ from branch to branch, so the pack in your hand has the last word. Last checked 14 October 2026.

On this page:

Which supermarkets in Germany are easiest for gluten-free shopping?

The 9 chains below show gluten-free products or a gluten-free range on their own websites (read 14 October 2026). The table shows what each one calls its line, in its own words, and whether we could find named products online.

Chain Its gluten-free line or brand What we found online Branches on the HTGF Atlas
dm-drogerie markt dmBio (gluten-free page) 8 products named below Yes, Shops tab
REWE REWE frei von 8 products named below Use the chain's store finder
Alnatura Alnavit ("immer glutenfrei") 8 products named below Use the chain's store finder
Rossmann enerBiO (products labelled glutenfrei) 7 products named below Yes, Shops tab
EDEKA EDEKA HerzstΓΌcke (products labelled glutenfrei) 5 products named below Use the chain's store finder
ALDI Nord ENJOY FREE 5 products named below Yes, Shops tab
ALDI SÜD none found online 4 products named below Use the chain's store finder
Kaufland K-FREE GLUTENFREI a range page, no product list Yes, Shops tab
denn's Biomarkt no line name (gluten-free organic products) a range page, no product list Yes, Shops tab

In short: dm, REWE and Alnatura make it easiest to plan ahead online; at EDEKA and Rossmann the gluten-free packs sit inside the general own brand, so the word glutenfrei on the pack is what you look for.

What gluten-free food does dm sell?

dm, the drugstore chain, has a gluten-free page for its own organic brand: "Alle glutenfreien Produkte von dmBio" (all gluten-free products from dmBio), which listed 370 products on 14 October 2026, including spices and tea. Its online shop also has a separate section: "Bei uns im dm-Onlineshop haben wir einen speziellen Bereich fΓΌr alle glutenfreien Lebensmittel angelegt" (we have set up a special section for all gluten-free food in our online shop). These eight dmBio packs show glutenfrei on dm's product pages:

What gluten-free food does Rossmann sell?

Rossmann has no separate gluten-free line. Its own organic brand enerBiO prints glutenfrei in the name of the products that carry the claim, and Rossmann's site lists them under that name. These seven enerBiO products showed glutenfrei on their Rossmann product pages on 14 October 2026:

Product (name on the pack) What it is Wording on the chain's page
enerBiO Glutenfreie Haferflocken Feinblatt Bioland, 500 g (Contains oats labelled gluten-free.) fine oat flakes glutenfrei in the product name

Source: Rossmann's own product pages, read 14 October 2026.

At Rossmann, check for glutenfrei in the name: enerBiO also sells ordinary Haferflocken Feinblatt (oat flakes) and Dinkel Herzen (spelt) without the claim.

What is in REWE's gluten-free range, REWE frei von?

REWE's own free-from line is called REWE frei von. In REWE's words: "REWE frei von bietet dafΓΌr eine Vielzahl an glutenfreien Produkten" (REWE frei von offers a wide range of gluten-free products). The line also includes lactose-free dairy, so read the pack: on 14 October 2026, 26 of the 40 products in REWE's own frei von list were named as gluten-free. Eight of them:

Product (name on the pack) What it is Wording on the chain's page
REWE frei von Penne glutenfrei, 500 g penne pasta glutenfrei in the product name
REWE frei von Spaghetti glutenfrei, 500 g spaghetti glutenfrei in the product name

REWE frei von covers bread and rolls as well as pasta and baking, so a REWE is worth a look on your first day.

What gluten-free food does EDEKA sell?

EDEKA says on its own site: "Die EDEKA Eigenmarke: In vielen MΓ€rkten verfΓΌgbar sind glutenfreie BrΓΆtchen, Brote, Pasta oder Knusperbrot" (EDEKA's own brand: gluten-free rolls, bread, pasta or crispbread are available in many stores). On 14 October 2026 EDEKA's own product search for glutenfrei returned five products, all from its brand EDEKA HerzstΓΌcke:

Product (name on the pack) What it is Wording on the chain's page
EDEKA HerzstΓΌcke Spaghetti glutenfrei, 500 g spaghetti (corn and chickpea flour) glutenfrei in the name and the description
EDEKA HerzstΓΌcke Fusilli glutenfrei, 500 g fusilli (corn and chickpea flour) glutenfrei in the name and the description

EDEKA HerzstΓΌcke glutenfreie WeltmeisterbrΓΆtchen seeded rolls glutenfrei in the name and the description

Source: EDEKA's own product pages, read 14 October 2026.

EDEKA itself says “in many stores”, so the range differs from one EDEKA to the next.

Does ALDI sell gluten-free food?

Yes, but ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD are two separate companies with their own ranges, and the sign outside tells you which one you're in. ALDI Nord's website lists ENJOY FREE Glutenfreies Brot, a gluten-free bread made with corn and rice. ALDI SÜD showed no gluten-free line on its website on 14 October 2026; the permanent products it labels Glutenfrei online were snacks. Both chains show only part of their store range online. What we found:

ALDI Product (name on the pack) What it is Wording on the chain's page
ALDI Nord ENJOY FREE Glutenfreies Brot gluten-free bread (corn and rice) Glutenfreies in the product name

Source: ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD's own product pages, read 14 October 2026.

ALDI’s online lists are short, so treat them as a sample: in the store, the word glutenfrei on the pack is what counts.

What gluten-free food does Alnatura sell?

Alnatura, the organic supermarket chain, sells the brand Alnavit and describes it as "immer glutenfrei, oft auch laktosefrei" (always gluten-free, often lactose-free). Alnatura says the Alnavit free-from range has more than 70 organic foods. Eight of them, each with a glutenfrei badge on Alnatura's product page on 14 October 2026:

Product (name on the pack) What it is Wording on the chain's page
Alnavit Buchweizen BrΓΆtchen, 120 g buckwheat rolls glutenfrei badge; legal name starts with Glutenfrei
Alnavit Helles Schnittbrot, 200 g sliced light bread glutenfrei badge; legal name starts with Glutenfrei

Alnavit is the one brand in this guide described as always gluten-free; Alnavit packs are sold in other shops too, MΓΌller’s online shop lists them, for example.

Which chains have a gluten-free range but no product list online?

Two more chains name a gluten-free range on their own websites but list no products we could check:

  • Kaufland calls its line K-FREE GLUTENFREI: “K-FREE GLUTENFREI – unsere Eigenmarke fΓΌr glutenfreie Produkte” (our own brand for gluten-free products). The line page names chocolate muffins, lemon cake, seeded rolls, white rolls and pasta, and says its K-FREE pasta is 98 percent corn flour and 2 percent chickpea flour. (Kaufland)
  • denn’s Biomarkt, the organic supermarket chain, has a page called “Glutenfreie Produkte in deinem Biomarkt” (gluten-free products in your Biomarkt) but no product list online. (denn’s Biomarkt)

Sources: Kaufland and denn's Biomarkt, own websites, read 14 October 2026.

Which chains showed no gluten-free line online?

On 14 October 2026 we found no gluten-free line on the websites of Lidl (its own search for glutenfrei found no match), Netto Marken-Discount (its search showed online-shop items only, no food) and PENNY (only a line on its vegan brand page saying many products are gluten- or lactose-free). That doesn’t mean their stores sell nothing gluten-free: the German Coeliac Society lists Lidl and Netto among the supermarkets where you can find gluten-free products. Read the pack.

How do you read a German label in two minutes?

You read a German pack in two steps: the claim on the front, then the highlighted words in the ingredient list (Zutaten). EU law makes the second step reliable, because every gluten grain must be named and highlighted.

  1. Front: look for glutenfrei or the crossed-grain symbol. Under EU law, glutenfrei means no more than 20 mg of gluten per kg (Regulation (EU) 828/2014).
  2. Back: find Zutaten and scan the highlighted words, usually in bold. EU law lists wheat (such as spelt and khorasan), rye, barley and oats as cereals containing gluten and requires them to be highlighted in the ingredient list (Regulation (EU) 1169/2011).
  3. Oats: if you see Hafer, check that the pack says glutenfrei. Oats in a gluten-free food must be specially produced to keep wheat, rye and barley out.
  4. The trace line: kann Spuren von … enthalten (may contain traces of) is a voluntary note. On a pack labelled glutenfrei, the regulated claim is what tells you the gluten level.
  5. Still not sure? Run the ingredient list through Label Lab, which reads German.
On the pack In English What it tells you
glutenfrei gluten-free A regulated claim: 20 mg of gluten per kg or less.
durchgestrichene Γ„hre crossed-grain symbol A licensed symbol on many gluten-free packs. A pack can say glutenfrei without it.
sehr geringer Glutengehalt very low gluten A regulated claim, but up to 100 mg of gluten per kg: not the same as gluten-free.
Weizen, Dinkel, GrΓΌnkern, Kamut wheat, spelt, green spelt, khorasan All are wheat: gluten grains, highlighted in the list.
Gerste, Gerstenmalz barley, barley malt A gluten grain; malt extract is made from it.
Roggen rye A gluten grain, highlighted in the list.
Hafer oats Only with glutenfrei on the pack; see the oats note below.
weizenfrei wheat-free Not the same as gluten-free: rye or barley can still be in it.
kann Spuren von … enthalten may contain traces of A voluntary note from the maker, not regulated.
von Natur aus glutenfrei naturally gluten-free Often marked with an asterisk after glutenfrei; the 20 mg/kg rule still applies.

Glutenfrei on the front plus no highlighted gluten grain on the back: that's the two-minute check.

Oats need one extra thought. Coeliac UK says most people with coeliac disease can eat gluten-free oats, and that a very small number are still sensitive to them. Several products in this guide contain oats labelled gluten-free (they're marked in the tables). Unsure about oats? Ask your doctor or dietitian.

More on the details: what the asterisk after glutenfrei means on German packs, what the crossed-grain symbol means, what “may contain gluten” really means and oats and coeliac disease. To check an ingredient list on the spot, open Label Lab.

Where do you find a branch near you?

The Shops tab of the HTGF Atlas shows branches of dm, Rossmann, ALDI Nord, Kaufland and denn’s Biomarkt across Germany on one map, each marked as a shop that sells sealed, labelled gluten-free products. Jump straight to dm, Rossmann, ALDI Nord, Kaufland or denn’s Biomarkt. REWE, EDEKA, Alnatura and ALDI SÜD aren’t on the map yet: use REWE’s store finder, EDEKA’s store finder, Alnatura’s store finder or the store selector on aldi-sued.de.

Branches differ: the German Coeliac Society notes that each shop has a different choice of products depending on its size and location.

Who can help you in Germany?

The German Coeliac Society (DZG) has an English page for visitors. It lists supermarkets and drugstores where you can find gluten-free products, explains that licensed gluten-free products carry the crossed-grain symbol, and says that DZG members get a free map of places with gluten-free options; it also offers to send the map’s results for the cities you’ll visit if you email them. DZG: for visitors with coeliac disease (read 14 October 2026).

Gluten-free supermarkets in Germany: your questions

Is dm good for gluten-free shopping?

Yes, dm is one of the easiest places in Germany to find gluten-free packs. Its own brand dmBio has a gluten-free page that listed 370 products on 14 October 2026, and dm's online shop has a separate gluten-free food section. What a branch stocks depends on its size, so look for glutenfrei on the pack.

Does Aldi sell gluten-free bread?

ALDI Nord does: its website lists ENJOY FREE Glutenfreies Brot, a gluten-free bread made with corn and rice (read 14 October 2026). ALDI SÜD, a separate company, showed no gluten-free bread on its website that day; the products it labelled Glutenfrei online were snacks. Stock differs by store, so look for glutenfrei on the pack.

Which German supermarkets have their own gluten-free brand?

REWE (REWE frei von), Kaufland (K-FREE GLUTENFREI) and dm (dmBio, with its own gluten-free page) name a gluten-free own-brand line on their websites, and Alnatura sells Alnavit, a brand it describes as always gluten-free. ALDI Nord sells ENJOY FREE Glutenfreies Brot, and EDEKA (EDEKA HerzstΓΌcke) and Rossmann (enerBiO) label individual own-brand products glutenfrei. We read all of them on 14 October 2026.

Is glutenfrei on a German pack the same as gluten-free?

Yes. Glutenfrei is the German word for the EU gluten-free claim, which allows no more than 20 mg of gluten per kg of food (Regulation (EU) 828/2014). The same rule applies to every pack carrying this claim sold in Germany, whichever chain sells it.

What does "kann Spuren von Gluten enthalten" mean?

It means "may contain traces of gluten". It is a voluntary note from the manufacturer, and no EU rule says when it must be used. On a pack that also says glutenfrei, the regulated claim tells you the gluten level. On a pack without the claim, it is information to weigh, and your dietitian can help you decide how to treat it.

Can I eat oats labelled glutenfrei with coeliac disease?

Most people can. In the EU, oats in a food labelled glutenfrei must be specially produced to keep wheat, rye and barley out (Regulation (EU) 828/2014), and Coeliac UK says most people with coeliac disease can eat gluten-free oats. A very small number still react to them; if you're unsure, or you notice symptoms, talk to your doctor or dietitian.
