Gluten-free bakery in Rome: 7 places, 3 dedicated

Rome Β· gluten-free bakeries
In Rome you’ll find 3 bakeries we rate as dedicated gluten-free kitchens (β ), with cornetti, bread, pizza by the slice and cakes, and another 4 places with gluten-free sweets that we don’t rate as dedicated kitchens (β). A further 4 are listed by a directory or an online map listing, and we haven’t checked them yet.
How gluten-free bakeries work in Rome
Breakfast in Rome is a cornetto and a cappuccino, or a maritozzo filled with cream. In the dedicated gluten-free bakeries you find them on the counter like anywhere else, next to bread and pizza by the slice. Then there are regular pasticcerie with a gluten-free line, and shops selling gluten-free sweets made by other labs: there, what matters is where each item comes from and how it is kept apart.
At the counter, ask three things. Is everything here gluten-free, or only part of it? Is it made in your own lab or brought in? And if the counter is mixed: how do you keep the gluten-free sweets apart, in the display and when you serve them?

Questions
Are gluten-free bakeries in Rome safe for coeliacs?
It depends on the lab, not the city. We rate New Food Gluten Free, Celiachiamo and Forno Dolci Sapori as dedicated gluten-free kitchens, and each card quotes what they say themselves. Where the counter is mixed, ask where the gluten-free sweets are made and how they are served. Always say you have coeliac disease.
Where can I get gluten-free cornetti for breakfast in Rome?
At the seven New Food Gluten Free shops (central by the Ponte Sisto bridge, then Piazza Fiume, San Giovanni, Monteverde, Ponte Milvio, EUR and Casal Palocco), at Celiachiamo on Via Carlo Caneva and at Forno Dolci Sapori on Via di Fontana Candida.
Is a gluten-free cannolo from a regular pastry shop OK for a coeliac?
It can be, but ask how it is made. The gluten-free shell has to be stored and filled apart, with clean tools, away from the wheat shells.
