Gluten-Free Cagliari: a dedicated kitchen, a gluten-free shop and pizza for coeliacs

Gluten-free city guide ยท the places worth planning around

Gluten-Free Cagliari

Cagliari is a Mediterranean port city built on Sardinian cooking, and Sardinian cooking runs on semolina: the fregola, the malloreddus, the culurgiones, the pane carasau and the seadas are all wheat. What makes Cagliari one of the more reassuring places in Italy to be a coeliac is the island itself. Coeliac disease is well known here, and understood as the everyday medical fact it is. That awareness runs deep: the national coeliac association AIC is active across the island, the Sardinia region funds its coeliac residents with a monthly voucher (the buono celiachia) spent in shops and pharmacies, and gluten-free versions of the Sardinian classics, even the semolina ones, are unusually easy to find. And the naturally gluten-free ground is broad once you ask: the roast meats, the seafood and bottarga, the pecorino, the almond sweets and the mirto.

This is not the whole map, and Cagliari is honest work. It is a smaller city than Rome or Naples, and its verified, wholly gluten-free bench is genuinely small (a dedicated gluten-free kitchen-bakery and a dedicated gluten-free shop, both in the new town), so this is honestly a guide of gluten-free-serving kitchens led by two dedicated (โ˜…) addresses, grouped by the quarter you’ll be walking. We name the dedicated bench as small, rather than pad the 10 with places that on a closer look turned out to be elsewhere on the island. Everything else lives in the Atlas, one link down.

How to read this guide

We publish evidence, not vibes. Every card carries its tier, the venue’s own stated handling, a street address, and the date a person last checked it. The โ˜… is set only by a person at How to Gluten Free: software never sets it, and a community report never earns it. Our four promises are public at howtoglutenfree.com/what-we-promise.

โ˜… DedicatedA kitchen or shop with no gluten in it.
GF-serving ยท written protocolA kitchen that also cooks with wheat and describes its gluten-free handling in writing.
AIC networkThe venue’s own site states an AIC network affiliation: its staff are trained by the Italian coeliac association. Not the full eating-out accreditation, and never a reason to skip the sentence.
AIC ยท AFC accreditedThe venue’s own site claims AIC’s Alimentazione Fuori Casa (AFC) accreditation, the association’s formal eating-out programme and a step beyond a network affiliation.
Checked by us / Checked onlineโ€œChecked by usโ€ means a person at HTGF checked the venue in person. โ€œChecked online ยท not visitedโ€ means a person applied our rule to the venue’s own website or map entry; nobody stood in the room.

Cagliari on foot, gluten-free

The places on this page are in the lower town and the newer city around it, not up on the Castello hill. In the Marina, the old port quarter behind Via Roma, are Gelateria PeterPan, a mixed gelateria at Via Roma 1 on the harbour front, and Nerocarbone, a mixed grill and pizzeria on Piazza Costituzione below the Bastione di Saint Remy; Savory, a mixed restaurant, is on Via Sassari near the station, and La Lira, a mixed pizzeria and grill, is a few minutes west of the station on Viale la Plaia. In Stampace, on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Cavรฒ Bistrot and Forma, both mixed kitchens with a gluten-free option, are a few minutes apart on foot, by our estimate. East of Castello, Likitta, a mixed cafรฉ and crรชperie that, a coeliac dining listing says, takes care over its gluten-free crรชpes and gelato, is on Piazza Garibaldi in Villanova, and a little further on, in San Benedetto, are the two entirely gluten-free addresses: Man.gia, a gluten-free kitchen, bakery and pizzeria on Via Ottone Bacaredda, and CELIAbbiamo, a gluten-free shop with a pastry counter on Via Vincenzo Monti, a few minutes apart on foot by our estimate. Piga ยท Gluten Free Store, a gluten-free shop run by the Piga pharmacy, is further north on Via Liguria. The lower town is walkable: from the station on Piazza Matteotti it is about 10 minutes on foot to Piazza Costituzione, and about 10 more to Piazza Garibaldi, by our estimate. Castello is the climb: it sits on a limestone hill about 100 metres above the sea, and from Via Roma up to the Cathedral square is about 15 to 20 minutes on foot, uphill, by our estimate. The Comune lists the public lifts up to Castello as running, with reduced hours, so check on the day. The Poetto beach is out of the centre, a bus ride to the east.

A day that works (not a Sunday, when the market is closed): start in San Benedetto at the market, which trades in a temporary hall in Piazza Nazzari while its historic building is renovated, from 07:00. Man.gia, the entirely gluten-free kitchen and bakery, is about 10 minutes away on foot, by our estimate, for bread and pastries from its own lab; take something for later, and check its hours first (its older site on Via Mameli is temporarily closed, so go to Via Ottone Bacaredda). CELIAbbiamo is a few minutes from it, but through September 2026 it worked on collection by appointment only, per its own site, so check before you go. From Man.gia it is about 10 minutes on foot, uphill, to the Cittadella dei Musei and the National Archaeological Museum on the north side of Castello, by our estimate, next to the San Pancrazio tower (closed for restoration: see it from outside). Walk through Castello to the Cathedral, about 5 minutes, then past the Elephant Tower (temporarily closed) to the Bastione di Saint Remy and its terrace, about 5 minutes. Come down from the Bastione to Piazza Costituzione, where Nerocarbone is, and on into Villanova: Likitta on Piazza Garibaldi is about 10 minutes on foot, by our estimate, for a gluten-free crรชpe or a cup of gelato (a mixed counter, so ask for the crรชpe to be made on a clean surface or a separate iron, as its card says). For dinner, Man.gia is about 5 minutes from Likitta, for a pizza from its dedicated oven or fresh gluten-free pasta. Or eat at a mixed kitchen: Forma on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II for its gluten-free pasta, or Nerocarbone for grilled meat or a gluten-free pizza; there, say the sentence and ask how the gluten-free food is kept apart. On a sunny afternoon, swap the second half for the Poetto: CTM lines PF and PQ run from by the station along Via Roma and past Bonaria to the beach; buy your ticket before you board.

Across Italy, many places belong to the Italian coeliac associationโ€™s eating-out programme, Alimentazione Fuori Casa (AFC). AIC calls them ยซinformatiยป, informed: staff trained on coeliac disease, AICโ€™s rules for preparing gluten-free food, a signed agreement, and an in-depth visit from AIC at least once a year. It is not a certificate, and joining is voluntary: plenty of kitchens serve gluten-free food outside it. AIC Sardegna, the associationโ€™s Sardinian branch, was founded in Cagliari at the end of 2022 and speaks for about 8,000 coeliacs in Sardinia, on Ministry of Health figures. It says every AFC place receives an AFC window sticker each year to display, so look for the current yearโ€™s, and that AIC members can see the list of AFC places nearby in the AIC app. The cards on this page donโ€™t mention AIC for any of these places; in a mixed kitchen an AFC sticker is a strong signal, not a guarantee. AIC advises booking ahead so the kitchen can get ready. When you book, say you have coeliac disease.

Sardinian cooking leans on durum wheat and semolina: pane carasau, fregola, malloreddus, culurgiones and seadas all contain gluten, so order them only where a gluten-free version is on the menu. For bread and fresh pasta without that worry, go where there is no wheat in the kitchen: Man.gia makes its own gluten-free bread and fresh gluten-free pasta. In a mixed kitchen, ask about the pasta water, the fryer and the sauces. Say the sentence before ordering, every time, dedicated kitchen or not: ยซSono celiaco/aยป, I have coeliac disease. For pizza or pasta, ask ยซLa pizza o la pasta senza glutine la fate con impasto e pentola separati?ยป (is the gluten-free pizza or pasta made with a separate dough and pot?), and for anything fried, ยซPer il fritto, cโ€™รจ una friggitrice dedicata al senza glutine?ยป (for fried food, is there a dedicated gluten-free fryer?). For a day on the Poetto or a trip out of town, carry your own food: stock up first at Piga ยท Gluten Free Store, at CELIAbbiamo (check its hours) or at a pharmacy. For the rest of the island, see our Sardinia guide.

01 ยท MARINA, VIA ROMA & THE PORT

Marina, Via Roma & the port

The tight grid between the harbourfront and the hill: the Marina quarter, where Cagliari meets the sea. Via Roma runs along the port under its long arcades, the ferries for Sicily and the mainland come and go, and the lanes behind fill with trattorie and aperitivo tables. It is where most visitors arrive and where the evening passeggiata ends: a gelato on the seafront, a kitchen that knows the coeliac conversation, and a gluten-free pizza a little further west along the port.

01

Gelateria PeterPan

GF-servingGelato & breakfast

A gelateria right on Via Roma, under the arcades that face the port: the sweet stop on the seafront where the ferries come in, a cup with the harbour in front of you at the start or the end of the passeggiata, exactly where you’ll be walking off the boat or heading up into the old town.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed gelateria (a coeliac dining listing, read 8 September 2026): a gluten-free option, not a dedicated counter. Most artisan gelato is naturally gluten-free, but a shared counter keeps wafer cones and biscuit-based flavours, so take a cup and confirm the flavour.

Order

A cup, not a cone; ask which flavours are gluten-free and request a fresh scoop and spoon from a clean tub.

Watch out

A busy shared counter with wheat cones and biscuit toppings: say the sentence, take a cup, and confirm the flavour is one they keep gluten-free.

02

Savory

GF-servingLunch & dinner

A restaurant on Via Sassari, in the grid between the port and Piazza Matteotti with its palm trees and the station: an easy central lunch or dinner a step from where the buses and trains come in, and a kitchen noted for staff who understand what coeliac means.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen: a coeliac dining listing notes staff knowledgeable about coeliac needs (read 8 September 2026). A gluten-free option handled with care, not a dedicated kitchen. It works with wheat pasta and bread, so say the sentence and confirm each plate.

Order

Ask which of the day’s plates can be made gluten-free; a grilled secondo or a naturally gluten-free Sardinian dish (the roast meats, the seafood) is lower-risk ground. Confirm the pan and the water.

Watch out

A kitchen also cooking wheat pasta and bread: the protocol is a good sign, but say the sentence and confirm each plate and its preparation.

La Lira pizzeria bisteccheria

GF-servingPizza & grill

A pizzeria and grill on Viale la Plaia, the road running west along the port toward the salt lagoon and its flamingos: pizza and grilled meats in a big, local room away from the tourist centre, and one noted for keeping a large part of its menu gluten-free.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed pizzeria: a coeliac dining listing describes it as mostly gluten-free with measures in place (read 8 September 2026). A strong gluten-free signal in a mixed kitchen, not a certified dedicated one. A wheat pizza oven still runs, so say the sentence and confirm the separate dough and oven.

Order

A gluten-free pizza from the separate dough, or a grilled meat, since the bisteccheria side is naturally gluten-free ground; confirm the base, the tray and the grill are kept clear of the wheat line.

Watch out

A busy pizza oven and a floured counter alongside the grill: say the sentence and confirm the gluten-free dough, tray and preparation before you order.

02 ยท STAMPACE & THE CASTELLO APPROACH

Stampace & the Castello approach

The old town rising from the port: Stampace, the medieval quarter of churches and workshops, and above it the walled citadel of Castello on its limestone ridge, with the Bastione di Saint Remy looking out over the city and the bay. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele climbs through Stampace toward the towers, lined with restaurants; this is the walking heart of Cagliari, and where three of the city’s gluten-free-serving kitchens sit within a few minutes of each other.

04

Cavรฒ Bistrot

GF-servingLunch, dinner & aperitivo

A bistrot at the foot of the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, where Stampace meets the climb to Castello: a relaxed room for a plate and a glass through the day, from lunch to the evening aperitivo, in the middle of the old-town walk.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed bistrot: a coeliac dining listing notes it offers gluten-free options (read 8 September 2026). A gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen. It works with wheat, so say the sentence and ask which plates are made gluten-free and kept apart.

Order

Ask which of the day’s plates can be made gluten-free; a naturally gluten-free board (Sardinian pecorino, cured meats, olives) with a marked gluten-free item is easy aperitivo ground. Confirm anything toasted or plated is kept clear of wheat.

Watch out

A shared kitchen and counter working with bread: say the sentence and confirm each plate and its preparation.

05

Forma

GF-servingLunch & dinner ยท pasta

A restaurant further up the Corso Vittorio Emanuele in Stampace: Italian cooking with a proper pasta menu, and a gluten-free line that puts a plate of well-cooked pasta within reach in the middle of the old town, the sort of dish a coeliac usually watches other people eat.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen (a coeliac dining listing, read 8 September 2026): a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen. A kitchen cooking wheat pasta all service is the risk, so say the sentence and confirm the gluten-free pasta is a separate dough boiled in clean water.

Order

The gluten-free pasta if they have it, with a naturally gluten-free sauce; confirm a clean pot of water, away from the wheat pasta.

Watch out

Wheat pasta cooked a metre away: say the sentence and confirm the gluten-free pasta and its water and pan are kept clear.

Nerocarbone

GF-servingDinner ยท grill & pizza

A grill-and-pizza restaurant on Piazza Costituzione, right below the Bastione di Saint Remy where Castello meets the Marina: charcoal-grilled meat and pizza in a lively room at the foot of the great staircase, an easy dinner at the centre of the evening passeggiata.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed kitchen (a coeliac dining listing, read 8 September 2026): a gluten-free option, not a dedicated kitchen. It runs a wheat pizza oven and a grill, so say the sentence and ask for the gluten-free option kept apart.

Order

A charcoal-grilled meat (naturally gluten-free ground) or a gluten-free pizza from the separate dough; confirm the grill, the tray and the preparation are kept clear of the wheat line.

Watch out

A busy grill and a shared pizza oven: say the sentence and confirm the separate dough and a clean grill before you order.

03 ยท VILLANOVA & SAN BENEDETTO (THE NEW TOWN)

Villanova & San Benedetto (the new town)

East of Castello the city opens into the everyday quarters where Cagliari actually lives: Villanova, the old artisans’ district around the long market street of Via Garibaldi, and beyond it San Benedetto, the modern grid with its great covered market, one of the largest in Italy. This is the least touristy part of the walk and, not by chance, where the city’s gluten-free scene runs deepest. Awareness of coeliac disease runs deep on the island, and it shows most here: the guide’s two dedicated addresses, a wholly gluten-free kitchen-bakery and a wholly gluten-free shop, sit in this quarter, alongside a cafรฉ and a specialist store.

07

Man.gia

โ˜… DedicatedPizza, bakery & restaurant ยท dedicated gluten-free

A wholly gluten-free kitchen, bakery and pizzeria in San Benedetto, a step from the covered market. Its name plays on the Italian mangia, ‘eat’, and it does the whole day gluten-free: bread and pastries from its own lab, pizza from a dedicated oven, and a full restaurant menu. In a city where Sardinian cooking runs on semolina, this is the address that gives a coeliac the run of the table.

The gluten-free angle

An entirely gluten-free kitchen, bakery and pizzeria (own site, read and cross-checked 11 September 2026). The kitchen states it is built for gluten intolerance, with its own bread-and-pasta lab. Its second, older site on Via Mameli is temporarily closed (Via Bacaredda is the one that’s open), so confirm the dedicated set-up as you would anywhere.

Order

The things Sardinia’s semolina classics usually put out of reach: gluten-free bread, a gluten-free pizza from the dedicated oven, fresh gluten-free pasta, all from a kitchen with no wheat in it.

CELIAbbiamo

โ˜… DedicatedShop & pastry ยท gluten-free

A gluten-free shop and fresh-pastry counter on Via Vincenzo Monti, near the market: bread, pasta, baked goods, frozen staples and a case of fresh gluten-free pastries, the address to stock a self-catering room or carry a picnic for the hills and the Poetto beach. It takes the regional coeliac voucher (buono celiachia), the mark of an established local gluten-free retailer.

The gluten-free angle

An entirely gluten-free shop and pastry counter, (a coeliac travel guide’s listing, read 8 September 2026). It is a shop, not a kitchen: read the labels and treat it as a pantry stop.

Order

Gluten-free bread, pasta and baked goods to carry or to stock the room, and a fresh gluten-free pastry from the case; certified packaged goods to read and trust.

Watch out

Through September 2026 the shop was on collection-by-appointment only, per its own site; check the current opening hours before you go.

Likitta

GF-servingBreakfast, crรชpes & gelato

A cafรฉ and crรชperie on Piazza Garibaldi, the top of Villanova’s long market street: sweet and savoury crรชpes, gelato and a sit-down break in a lived-in local square, and a counter noted for a real gluten-free protocol on the crรชpes and gelato a coeliac usually can’t share.

The gluten-free angle

A mixed cafรฉ: a coeliac dining listing describes protocols in place for the gluten-free crรชpes and gelato (read 8 September 2026). A gluten-free option handled with care, not a dedicated counter. The batter and cones are wheat, so say the sentence and confirm the gluten-free crรชpe is made on a clean surface or a separate iron.

Order

A gluten-free crรชpe made on a clean surface, or a cup of gelato; confirm the batter, the iron and the scoop are kept clear of the wheat ones.

Watch out

A shared crรชpe iron and gelato counter: say the sentence and confirm the gluten-free preparation before you order.

GF-servingShop & pharmacy ยท gluten-free

The gluten-free store run by the Piga pharmacy: a shelf-lined shop of gluten-free bread, pasta, biscuits and staples, filling the regional coeliac prescription (buono) and stocking the brands a coeliac trusts. The reliable place to load up for a self-catering stay or a day out to the beach and the coast.

The gluten-free angle

A shop specialising in gluten-free food rather than a kitchen (own site, read 30 September 2026: ยซNegozio specializzato nella vendita di alimenti senza glutine e intolleranze alimentariยป): a pantry stop; read the labels as you would anywhere.

The San Benedetto market trades in its temporary hall in Piazza Nazzari Monday to Friday 07:00 to 14:00 and Saturday 07:00 to 15:00, closed on Sunday; CTM line M stops at ยซvia Bacaredda – mercato civicoยป. 06 ยท Getting around

Getting around

From the airport by train, around the city by CTM bus, up to Castello and out to the Poetto. Fares change, so each line carries the date we read it.

From Cagliari Elmas airport

  • Train (Trenitalia) from the airportโ€™s own station, Elmas Aeroporto, to the centre of Cagliari in under 10 minutes, on average every 20 minutes. On weekdays the first train leaves the airport at 6:03 and the last at 23:07; from Cagliari, the first leaves at 5:10 and the last at 22:00. Airport to the centre: โ‚ฌ1.30.Trenitalia, read 30 September 2026
  • Train tickets: from the ticket machines in the terminalโ€™s Arrivals hall and at the station, in the Trenitalia app, on trenitalia.com, at stations and at authorised sellers. Or use Tap&Tap: tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express card on a validator marked TAP&TAP before you board, and tap it again at your destination station to end the journey.Trenitalia and SOGAER, Cagliari airport, read 30 September 2026
  • Taxi: the airportโ€™s page gives a minimum fare of โ‚ฌ17 for a daytime ride to the city centre. That is a minimum, not a fixed fare, and the page gives no night fare, so ask the driver before you set off. Radio taxis in Cagliari, all 24 hours: Quattro Mori (070 400101), Rossoblรน (070 6655) and Cagliari 0707055 (070 7055).SOGAER, Cagliari airport, read 30 September 2026

City buses (CTM)

  • CTM tickets: single โ‚ฌ1.30, valid 90 minutes from validation on the whole CTM network; 12 rides โ‚ฌ13.00 (90 minutes each); day ticket โ‚ฌ3.30, valid 24 hours from validation, not a calendar day; weekly card โ‚ฌ12.00, valid 7 days.CTM, read 30 September 2026
  • Buying tickets: CTM tickets are electronic, either a chip ticket on paper (Chip On Paper) or the rechargeable CTM Card, sold at CTM Points, authorised sellers and ticket machines, or as digital tickets in the Busfinder and Around Sardinia apps. ยซContactlessยป on CTMโ€™s pages means these chip tickets, not paying with your bank card.CTM, read 30 September 2026
  • On board: have a valid ticket before you board, and validate it at the start of every trip and at every change. All stops are request stops: signal the bus with your hand. One piece of hand luggage up to 25 x 30 x 50 cm travels free.CTM, read 30 September 2026

Castello, the station and the Poetto

  • Castello sits on a limestone hill about 100 metres above sea level and is still entered through its medieval gates. On foot it is about 15 to 20 minutes uphill from Via Roma to the Cathedral square (our estimate). The Comune lists the public lifts (Bastione Saint Remy, Scalette Santa Chiara, Unione Sarda) as running, with reduced hours since 1 July 2026 until further notice, so check on the day; CTM lines 7 and 10 link Castello with the rest of the city.Comune di Cagliari, read 30 September 2026; walking time: our estimate
  • Cagliari station faces Piazza Matteotti, where Via Roma runs on west towards Stampace, with the Palazzo Civico on the same square. The airport trains run to and from here.Wikipedia and Trenitalia, read 30 September 2026
  • To the Poetto: CTM line PF leaves from Via Sassari, opposite the station car park, and runs along Via Roma (Molo Sanitร , Molo Dogana), past Bonaria and along Viale Diaz to the Poetto seafront and on to Flumini; line PQ leaves from Piazza Matteotti (third platform) and runs along Via Roma, past Bonaria and along Viale Diaz to the Poetto. Buy your ticket before you board. From 16 September 2026 CTM suspended its summer lines (3P, PEX, 5ZE, 11 and the night circular); PF and PQ are not on that list.CTM, read 30 September 2026
07 ยท Gluten-free shopping

Gluten-free shopping

For a picnic on the Poetto or a stocked fridge if you are self-catering.

Pharmacies and supermarkets

  • Pharmacies (farmacie) sell gluten-free products, says the coeliac association AIC. The free-voucher scheme you may read about is only for people living in Italy.AIC, read 30 September 2026
  • Supermarket own ranges: Conad ยซAlimentumยป and Carrefour ยซCarrefour No Glutenยป.Conad and Carrefour, read 30 September 2026
  • Supermarkets: Carrefour Express at Via Manno 10, on one of the central shopping streets (Monday to Wednesday 08:00 to 22:00, Thursday to Sunday 08:00 to 23:00; holiday hours may vary), and Conad City at Via Sebastiano Satta 9 A (Monday to Saturday 08:00 to 21:00, Sunday 08:00 to 13:30). Their pages donโ€™t list gluten-free stock, so ask in store.Carrefour and Conad store pages, read 30 September 2026

What to look for

  • ยซSenza glutineยป on a label means no more than 20 mg/kg (EU rule). The crossed-grain symbol (Spiga Barrata) is AICโ€™s licensed mark on suitable products.AIC, read 30 September 2026
  • For bread, pasta and pastry, the entirely gluten-free addresses on this page beat any supermarket shelf: Man.gia, a gluten-free kitchen and bakery with its own lab on Via Ottone Bacaredda, and CELIAbbiamo, a gluten-free shop with a pastry counter on Via Vincenzo Monti (through September 2026 it worked on collection by appointment only, per its own site, so check its hours). Piga ยท Gluten Free Store on Via Liguria, run by the Piga pharmacy, stocks certified gluten-free bread, pasta, biscuits and staples: read the labels there too. This page

Stock varies from shop to shop. Check the label of every product, every time.

08 ยท Plan your trip

Plan your trip

Where to base yourself

  • Marina, Via Roma & the port: the harbourfront and the old lanes behind it: a gelato on the seafront, a kitchen with a coeliac protocol, and a gluten-free pizza west along the port (chapter 1).
  • Stampace & the Castello approach: the medieval quarter and the climb to the citadel: a bistrot and a pasta restaurant on the Corso Vittorio Emanuele and a grill on Piazza Costituzione, a few minutes apart (chapter 2).
  • Villanova & San Benedetto (the new town): the everyday quarters and the covered market, where the gluten-free scene runs deepest: the guide’s dedicated gluten-free kitchen-bakery and shop, a cafรฉ and a specialist store (chapter 3).

For self-catering, the reliable model is a room with a fridge plus a gluten-free shop from the guide (CELIAbbiamo and the Piga ยท Gluten Free Store, both in the new town, chapter 3) for bread, pasta and staples, and the dedicated Man.gia (chapter 3) for a whole gluten-free meal or a bakery run; pharmacies (farmacie) carry certified staples too, and Sardinia’s coeliac provision is deep. Carry a picnic for the Poetto beach and the day trips out along the coast and into the interior, where gluten-free options thin out.

The one sentence to say

Say it before ordering, every time, dedicated kitchen or not.

Sono celiaco/a. Non posso mangiare glutine e devo evitare anche la contaminazione con farina di grano, pane, pasta, pizza, briciole e olio di frittura condiviso.

I have coeliac disease. I cannot eat gluten, and I also need to avoid cross-contact with wheat flour, bread, pasta, pizza, crumbs and shared frying oil.

Get the full Italian dining card with the follow-up questions โ†’

The two that go furthest in Sardinia: at a table, La pizza o la pasta senza glutine la fate con impasto e pentola separati? (โ€œIs the gluten-free pizza or pasta made with a separate dough and pot?โ€) and, for the fried food and the sweets, Per il fritto, c’รจ una friggitrice dedicata al senza glutine? (โ€œFor fried food, is there a dedicated gluten-free fryer?โ€)

Good to know

  • โ€œSenza glutineโ€ means โ‰ค 20 mg/kg (20 ppm), the EU and Codex threshold. A label that says it, means it.
  • AIC affiliation comes in two levels. An AIC network venue has staff trained by the Italian coeliac association and follows its documented cross-contact procedures. An AFC-accredited venue (AIC’s Alimentazione Fuori Casa programme) goes a step further, on the association’s formal eating-out register, and AIC Sardegna keeps its own active list. Both are strong signals in a mixed kitchen; neither is a guarantee, and neither is a reason to skip the sentence.
  • Sardinia’s classics are semolina, but the island knows gluten. The fregola, the malloreddus, the culurgiones, the pane carasau, the seadas and the pardulas are durum wheat or semolina: they are not gluten-free. But because Sardinia has such deep coeliac awareness, gluten-free versions of them are unusually easy to find, and much of the rest of the table is naturally on your side: the roast porceddu, the seafood and bottarga, pecorino sardo, the almond sweets (amaretti, sospiri) and mirto are naturally gluten-free; confirm the pasta water, the fryer and the sauces.
  • The coeliac voucher and the pharmacies. Sardinia funds its coeliac residents with a monthly voucher (the buono celiachia); as a visitor you can’t use it, but it means the island’s shops and pharmacies (farmacie) carry a deep range of certified gluten-free staples (bread, pasta, biscuits), so stocking a self-catering room is easy. The city’s gluten-free shops (chapter 3) are the fullest.
  • Getting around: the old town is compact but steep: the Marina and Stampace run flat along the port, Castello is a climb (public lifts help you up). The Poetto beach is a few kilometres east, an easy bus ride; carry a gluten-free snack for the beach and for the day trips out to Nora, the coast and the interior, where options thin out fast.

Closures and lost dedicated status are logged as dated facts on the live page, never as judgements. A closed door, a changed menu, a new dedicated place: hello@howtoglutenfree.com or the report button in the app. Readers keep this page alive.

Every listing carries a source and a last-verified date. This guide is a communication and travel aid, not a guarantee, and not medical advice. Kitchens, owners and protocols change; verify at the door.

  • Tiers, addresses and dates: the HTGF Atlas (entries checked by a person only), read 17 September 2026.
  • Venue protocols are quoted from the venue’s own website or listing as we found it; we never print a third-party source’s claims as our own check.
  • Map links open a Google Maps search for the name and address on file; where a postcode is not on file, none is shown.
