Are gummy bears gluten-free? Usually, check the label
Usually, yes. Gummy bears are sugar, glucose syrup, gelatine or a plant gelling agent, flavour and colour.
What to check
- Liquorice and some chewy sweets are made with wheat flour. Read the ingredients.
- Some sweets are dusted with starch; wheat starch would be named in the EU and UK.
- Glucose syrup made from wheat is gluten-free, and the EU exempts it from allergen labelling.
- Pick-and-mix: shared scoops and liquorice next to the gummies mean cross-contact.
