Is rice paper gluten-free? Usually, but some contain wheat
Usually, yes. Rice paper, the wrapper for fresh spring rolls, is normally made from rice flour, tapioca starch, water and salt.
What to check
- The ingredients: some rice papers contain wheat flour. In the EU and UK wheat is named and highlighted.
- A pack doesn’t have to say gluten-free if the ingredients are naturally gluten-free, so the ingredient list decides.
- In restaurants: the wrapper may be fine and the dipping sauce not. Hoisin and soy-based dips usually contain wheat; fish sauce dips usually don’t.
