Is ranch dressing gluten-free? Often, but check the bottle
Often, but not always. Ranch is buttermilk, mayonnaise or sour cream, herbs and spices, none of which contains gluten. Bottled dressings and seasoning mixes are where it varies.
What to check
- Thickeners and fillers: some mixes use wheat flour or wheat starch. In the US, wheat has to be declared on the label.
- Malt: barley malt or malt vinegar can appear in flavourings. In the US, barley isn’t a declared allergen, so read the ingredient list itself.
- Ranch-flavoured snacks: check separately; the seasoning on a snack is a different product.
- In restaurants: ask whether the ranch is house-made or bottled, and check the bottle.
