Gluten-free at the Cologne Christmas market: what a coeliac can actually eat

UPDATED=2026-09-24READ=5 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

The short answer

Cologne’s Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom fills Roncalliplatz beneath the Cathedral with the usual spread: Glühwein, chestnuts, Reibekuchen, Bratwurst and Lebkuchen. At the stalls, the reliable things are the whole ones: chestnuts, the drink in your mug, and a plain grilled sausage off its roll once you’ve asked. Most of the fried and baked food is wheat. The good news is off the market: Cologne has two dedicated gluten-free cafés on our list, both checked against their own sites.

New to markets? Start with the method: how to eat gluten-free at any Christmas market

This season’s market

The Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom on Roncalliplatz runs from Monday 16 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026, and is closed on Sunday 22 November (Totensonntag). Opening hours, as the organiser prints them: Sunday to Wednesday 11:00 to 21:00, Thursday and Friday 11:00 to 22:00, Saturday 10:00 to 22:00. Official page: koelnerweihnachtsmarkt.com. Check it again nearer the time for any late change.

It’s a mixed market, not a gluten-free one, so treat it the way the hub describes: a market stall is a food business, and asking what’s in the food, and what else touches it, is your right.

What’s likely gluten-free at the stalls, and what isn’t

Cologne’s own signature is Reibekuchen, Rhineland potato pancakes, usually served with apple sauce. As with any potato pancake, the questions are the binder in the batter (usually flour) and the shared fryer, not the potato. The rest follows the hub’s tiers, and no stall is named. Roasted chestnuts, the drink in your mug, and pure coffee or tea are reliably gluten-free by their nature, handling permitting. A plain grilled sausage is meat, fat, salt and spices in the German trade definitions, but the roll, the sauce and the grill are the question. Gebrannte Mandeln and currywurst sauce are ask-first. Lebkuchen, Stollen and waffles are wheat almost every time.

Getting there and staying

We don’t yet have a gluten-free breakfast we can vouch for at a Cologne stay, so we don’t name one here. For self-catering, look for a labelled “glutenfrei” range in supermarkets and organic shops, and read the label each time.

FAQ

What can I eat at the Cologne Christmas market if I’m coeliac?
The whole things: roasted chestnuts, the Glühwein in your mug, coffee and pure teas, and a plain grilled sausage taken off its roll after asking what else is on the grill. Most of the fried and baked stalls are wheat.

Is Reibekuchen gluten-free?
The potato is. The usual binder is flour and the fryer is often shared with breaded food, so ask what’s in the batter and whether it’s fried separately.

Are there dedicated gluten-free places in Cologne?
Yes. Isabella Glutenfreie Pâtisserie on Kettengasse and gesund & süß on Benesisstraße are both gluten-free by their own description, checked against their own sites. Beyond those, several restaurants, cafés and shops on our list offer gluten-free options.

Is Glühwein gluten-free?
By its legal definition, Glühwein is wine sweetened and spiced, with no gluten-containing ingredient. Ask about a ready spice or punch mix. The duty to declare allergens applies even though the drink carries no ingredient list.
