Southport Β· gluten-free fish and chips

4 fish and chip places in and around Southport say in their own words that they offer gluten-free fish and chips. One is fully gluten-free (β˜…): Al-lee’s Gluten Free Kitchen on Stanley Street, whose own Facebook page says its menu, fish and chips included, comes from its fully gluten-free kitchen. Fylde in Marshside, Chippy T towards Birkdale and The Good Catch in Freshfield, Formby (Mondays and Tuesdays only) also cook with gluten (◐) and don’t say how the gluten-free fish is fried, so ask about the oil. One more place is listed by a directory or an online map listing, and we haven’t checked it yet. Updated October 2026.

How gluten-free fish and chips works in Southport

The places on this page are spread along the coast, from Marshside north of the town centre to Freshfield in Formby to the south. They say in their own words that they offer gluten-free fish and chips. Apart from Al-lee’s Gluten Free Kitchen, whose whole kitchen is gluten-free, none describes its fryers, so the oil is the question to ask.

Coeliac UK’s advice on takeaways: chips, or fish in gluten-free batter, are not gluten-free if they’re fried in the same oil as battered food with gluten. Ask about the oil for the chips too, because shops often rotate it. Taking the batter off battered fish doesn’t help, because the fish has already picked up gluten. The NHS lists fish as naturally gluten-free, but not breaded or battered fish.

So ask three things when you order. Is the batter gluten-free? Do the gluten-free fish and the chips go into oil that never sees battered food? And is there a gluten-free night or a dedicated gluten-free fryer? Coeliac UK says some shops have one or the other. In the UK, β€œgluten-free” on a menu means 20 parts per million or less, also for food that isn’t prepacked. Coeliac UK’s Gluten Free Accreditation goes to venues that follow its standards, processes and training; we show it on a card only when the venue’s own site says so.

Questions

Is fish and chips in Southport gluten-free?

Not as standard: the NHS lists fish as naturally gluten-free, but not battered fish. The 4 places on this page say in their own words (website or Facebook page) that they offer gluten-free fish and chips or a gluten-free option. Ask for it clearly when you order.

Is gluten-free fish and chips in Southport safe for coeliacs?

It depends on the oil, not the town. Coeliac UK says chips, or fish in gluten-free batter, are not gluten-free if they’re fried in the same oil as battered food with gluten. Al-lee’s Gluten Free Kitchen says its whole kitchen is gluten-free; the other places on this page don’t say how their gluten-free fish is fried, and The Good Catch writes that slight traces may be found, so ask about the oil and say you have coeliac disease.

Which days can I get gluten-free fish and chips at The Good Catch?

Its menu says gluten-free fish and chips are served every Monday and Tuesday, alongside the usual menu; one line on its site says Mondays only, so ring ahead to check.
