Gluten-Free Osaka: okonomiyaki, curry and rice-flour bakeries, for coeliacs

UPDATED=2026-09-29READ=15 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL
Gluten-free city guide · the places worth planning around

Gluten-Free Osaka

Osaka’s own dishes are wheat dishes: okonomiyaki and takoyaki are made from a wheat batter, kushikatsu is breaded and deep-fried, and soy sauce is in most sauces and broths. The good news is that Osaka has a small group of places where everything is gluten-free, including an okonomiyaki restaurant, and three of them are in Namba.

This is a short list on purpose: 14 places whose own website, menu or Instagram we read on 29 September 2026, each quoted in its own words. Six are entirely gluten-free by their own words; five more call themselves gluten-free cafés or a gluten-free bakery, and three are mixed kitchens with gluten-free food. Everything else we track in Osaka is on the live map, one link down.

How to read this guide

We publish evidence, not vibes. Every card carries the venue’s own words about how it handles gluten, a street address from our records, and the date we last checked it. The ★ is set only by a person at How to Gluten Free: software never sets it, and a community report never earns it. Our four promises are public at howtoglutenfree.com/what-we-promise.

★ DedicatedA bakery, kitchen or shop with no gluten in it, in its own words and on our check.
GF-serving · written protocolA kitchen that also cooks with wheat and describes its gluten-free handling in writing.
Checked by us / Checked online“Checked by us” means a person at HTGF checked the venue in person. “Checked online · not visited” means we applied our rule to the venue’s own website or page; nobody stood in the room.
01 · ENTIRELY GLUTEN-FREE

Entirely gluten-free

Six places whose own words say everything they make is gluten-free: curry, okonomiyaki and savoury crêpes for a meal, and rice-flour sweets and bakes for the afternoon. Three of them are in Namba.

01

Spys Oasis

★ DedicatedCurry lunch & bar

A curry restaurant in Namba at lunch and a bar in the evening, where the gluten-free claim covers the drinks and the seasonings as well as the food.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site: «All products (from ingredients to beverages and seasonings) are 100% gluten-free and milk product-free».

Order

A curry at lunch. Its own words put the seasonings inside the gluten-free claim, so that includes the soy sauce and miso.

Watch out

It serves chicken and pork curries too, so it isn’t a vegan place. Its site gives lunch 11:30 to 15:00 and the bar 18:00 to midnight, closed Thursday, and posts its trading days each month.

Gluten-Free&Vegan OKONOMIYAKI Vim

★ DedicatedOkonomiyaki

Osaka’s signature dish without the wheat: an okonomiyaki restaurant in Namba with gluten-free in its name.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site: «全ての料理とドリンクがグルテンフリーかつヴィーガンフードで、化学添加物を一切使用していません。» (every dish and drink is gluten-free and vegan, with no chemical additives).

Order

Okonomiyaki, the reason to come.

Watch out

Its site doesn’t say what the sauces are made with: ask whether the okonomiyaki sauce and the soy sauce are gluten-free (tamari). The street address isn’t on its own site; listings give 1-3-13 Namba. Its site links to the Spys Oasis Instagram.

A savoury crêpe for lunch.

Watch out

Its site gives Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 17:00, closed Monday. It doesn’t say what goes into the seasonings, so ask whether any soy sauce in the fillings is gluten-free (tamari).

Order

Bakes from the counter and a drink.

Watch out

Four vegan cafés and a bakery that call themselves gluten-free. On each card we say what their own words don’t cover and what to ask.

07

Buddha (ブッダ)

GF-servingPlant-based lunch

A plant-based lunch café whose own words say every meal is made without wheat.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site: «ALL vegan & Glutenfree お食事は全てプラントベース・小麦・卵・乳・白砂糖・添加物・保存料不使用。» (all meals are plant-based, with no wheat, eggs, dairy, white sugar, additives or preservatives).

Order

A weekday lunch plate.

Watch out

Weekdays only: its site gives Monday to Friday, 10:30 to 15:30. It doesn’t say anything about soy sauce, so ask whether it is gluten-free (tamari).

Shinsekai Paprika Shokudo (新世界パプリカ食堂)

GF-servingTakoyaki & kushikatsu

Takoyaki and kushikatsu, two Osaka classics, in a vegan restaurant in Shinsekai. Its own page puts it right behind Kushikatsu Daruma.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site: «パプリカ食堂は100%植物性、グルテンフリーにこだわっています» (Paprika Shokudo is committed to being 100% plant-based and gluten-free).

Order

The takoyaki and kushikatsu, which its menu marks vegan and gluten-free.

Watch out

Not everything on the menu carries the gluten-free mark: the vegan ramen section has none, and an enoki dish with butter soy sauce (えのきバター醤油) has no gluten-free note, so ask about the noodles and the soy sauce. The draft beer contains barley, as its drinks menu says. Its site gives 12:00 to 15:00 and 17:30 to 21:30, closed Wednesday and some other days (see its Instagram).

Vege DELI Sumiyoshi Taisha (ベジ)

GF-servingDeli & bowls

A small vegan and gluten-free deli by Sumiyoshi Taisha.

The gluten-free angle

Its Instagram bio (read 29 September 2026): «ヴィーガン & グルテンフリー / Vegan & Gluten Free», and «当店人気 No1 ブッダボウル» (our most popular dish: the Buddha bowl).

Order

The Buddha bowl.

Watch out

The bio doesn’t say that every dish is gluten-free, so ask, and ask whether the soy sauce is gluten-free (tamari). Listings give slightly different street numbers; check its Instagram before you go.

Anosaki Konosaki (アノサキコノサキ)

GF-servingCafé

A café in Nakazakicho that calls itself a gluten-free café in its own account name.

The gluten-free angle

Its Instagram (read 29 September 2026): the account name «アノサキコノサキ グルテンフリーカフェ/中崎町カフェ» (Anosaki Konosaki gluten-free café, Nakazakicho café) and the bio «グルテンフリー×低カロリー×発酵食» (gluten-free, low-calorie, fermented food).

Order

Lunch, after asking what is gluten-free today.

Watch out

Its own words don’t say whether the whole menu is gluten-free, so ask. Fermented food often means soy sauce or miso: ask whether they are gluten-free.

03 · SOBA, WAFFLES AND A CAFÉ WITH OPTIONS

Soba, waffles and a café with options

Three mixed kitchens with gluten-free food in their own words: 100% buckwheat soba near Hozenji, gluten-free waffles in Kitahorie, and a café with a gluten-free menu. Say the sentence every time.

12

Genji-soba (源氏蕎麦)

GF-servingSoba

A soba restaurant near Hozenji with 100% buckwheat noodles and a dashi soy sauce made without wheat.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site: «We also cater to health-conscious customers with gluten-free options, vegan dishes, and meals suitable for those with celiac disease», and «当店の商品には、グルテンフリーの十割そば( 100% そば粉)と、小麦不使用のだし醤油があります。» (its gluten-free juwari soba is 100% buckwheat, and its dashi soy sauce is made without wheat).

Order

The juwari soba (十割そば) with the wheat-free dashi soy sauce.

Watch out

This is a soba and tempura kitchen with gluten-free options, not a gluten-free kitchen: ask whether your soba is boiled in its own water, and skip the tempura unless they can tell you the batter and fryer are gluten-free. Go to the new shop on Hozenji Sando; its site says the old shop at 4-5-8 Namba is closed for the time being.

Café NoHo

GF-servingWaffles

A waffle and gelato café in Kitahorie where the homemade waffles are all gluten-free.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site: «オールグルテンフリーの自家製ワッフル» (homemade waffles, all gluten-free).

Order

A waffle.

Watch out

The waffles are gluten-free, the kitchen isn’t: its lunch menu has included couscous, which is wheat. Ask how the waffles are kept apart, and ask about the gelato before you order it.

Cafe Mahana

GF-servingCafé lunch

A café with many gluten-free, low-sugar and low-calorie dishes on its menu.

The gluten-free angle

Its own site: «グルテンフリーや低糖質、低カロリーにこだわったメニューを多数取り揃えています。» (many dishes focused on gluten-free, low-sugar and low-calorie eating).

Order

The dishes it names as gluten-free.

Watch out

A café with gluten-free dishes, not a gluten-free kitchen: say the sentence and ask about soy sauce. Its own site says pets live in the café. It gives 11:30 to 18:00, closed Thursday and about two Sundays a month.

04 · Plan your trip

Plan your trip

Where to base yourself

  • Namba (Chuo Ward): Spys Oasis, Vim and Naki Vegan Sweets (chapter 1), and Genji-soba on Hozenji Sando (chapter 3).
  • Nakazaki (Kita Ward): Etincelle Crepe (chapter 1) and Anosaki Konosaki (chapter 2).
  • Elsewhere in the city: Comeconoco and Cafe Mahana (Chuo Ward), FOLK (Fukushima Ward), Café NoHo (Kitahorie, Nishi Ward), Paprika Shokudo (Shinsekai, Naniwa Ward), Buddha (Higashinari Ward), My Bakery (Joto Ward) and Vege DELI (Sumiyoshi Ward).

We haven’t checked an Osaka hotel kitchen ourselves. When you book, ask about a gluten-free breakfast and pick a room with a fridge: My Bakery (chapter 2) bakes only with rice flour, and Comeconoco (chapter 1) is good for a box of sweets.

The one sentence to say

Show it before ordering, every time, dedicated kitchen or not. Coeliac disease in Japanese is セリアック病, and wheat is 小麦 (komugi).

I have coeliac disease, an autoimmune condition, not a diet choice or preference. I can’t eat wheat (including spelt, kamut, durum and semolina), barley, rye or ordinary oats, or anything made with them (bread, pasta, batter, breadcrumbs, flour).

Get the dining card with the follow-up questions →

Two follow-ups that help in Japan. For sauces and broths: 「これに醤油、麦芽、小麦粉、パン粉、固形スープの素は入っていますか?確認していただけますか?」 (“Is there soy sauce, malt, flour, breadcrumbs or stock cubes in this? Could you check?”). For anything fried: 「これは共用のフライヤーや共用の油で揚げましたか?」 (“Was this fried in a shared fryer or shared oil?”)

Good to know

  • Japanese labels flag wheat, not gluten. Wheat (小麦) is one of nine allergens that must be declared on packaged food (Consumer Affairs Agency list, April 2026). Barley (大麦) and rye (ライ麦) are on neither the mandatory nor the recommended list, so look for them, and for malt (麦芽), in the ingredients yourself.
  • Rice-flour bread is not automatically wheat-free. The Consumer Affairs Agency warns that rice-flour products such as 米粉パン can contain gluten or other wheat ingredients, and tells shoppers to ask the staff at in-store bakeries that have no labels.
  • No “may contain” line does not mean no cross-contact. The Agency recommends, but does not require, a warning such as 「本品製造工場では…」 when contamination can’t be ruled out.
  • Soy sauce is the classic trap. Almost all shoyu (醤油) is brewed with wheat, and it goes into tare, tsuyu and marinades. Ask for tamari (たまり), and check that label too: not all tamari is wheat-free.
  • Okonomiyaki and takoyaki are wheat dishes by default. The batter is normally wheat flour, and the sauces that go on top (okonomiyaki sauce, Worcestershire-style sauce, soy sauce) usually contain wheat. Even where a shop makes a gluten-free batter, ask whether it is cooked on a griddle (teppan, 鉄板) shared with wheat batter.
