Gluten-Free Tokyo: dedicated restaurants, rice-flour bakeries and sweets, for coeliacs

UPDATED=2026-09-29READ=17 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL
Gluten-free city guide · the places worth planning around

Gluten-Free Tokyo

Tokyo runs on wheat and soy sauce: ramen, tempura batter, and the shoyu that goes into almost every broth and glaze. The good news is a growing number of places where everything is gluten-free, many of them bakeries and sweet shops working with rice flour (米粉), and a few restaurants too.

This is a short list on purpose: 18 places whose own website, shop page or Instagram bio we read on 29 September 2026, each quoted in its own words. Sixteen say in their own words, or in their name, that what they serve is gluten-free; two more come close, with the questions to ask. Everything else we track in Tokyo is on the live map, one link down.

How to read this guide

We publish evidence, not vibes. Every card carries the venue’s own words about how it handles gluten, a street address from our records, and the date we last checked it. The ★ is set only by a person at How to Gluten Free: software never sets it, and a community report never earns it. Our four promises are public at howtoglutenfree.com/what-we-promise.

★ DedicatedA bakery, kitchen or shop with no gluten in it, in its own words and on our check.
GF-serving · written protocolA kitchen that also cooks with wheat and describes its gluten-free handling in writing.
Checked by us / Checked online“Checked by us” means a person at HTGF checked the venue in person. “Checked online · not visited” means we applied our rule to the venue’s own website or page; nobody stood in the room.
01 · ENTIRELY GLUTEN-FREE: RESTAURANTS & CAFÉS

Entirely gluten-free: restaurants & cafés

Six places where everything on the food menu is gluten-free, in their own words or in their name: a restaurant run by a coeliac owner, rice bowls in Aoyama, tempura in Asakusa, a small izakaya, a vegan café and a rice-flour café. Soy sauce is still the question to ask where the venue doesn’t answer it.

01

Oh Nana!

★ DedicatedLunch & dinner

A gluten-free restaurant in Kanda, opened in March 2026 by an owner with coeliac disease, according to its own about page.

The gluten-free angle

Its own about page calls it «日本初欧米基準のセリアック病対応ができる完全グルテンフリーレストラン» (in its words, Japan’s first fully gluten-free restaurant able to cater for coeliac disease to Western standards), and adds «使用している原材料、 調味料は全てグルテンフリー» (every ingredient and seasoning it uses is gluten-free).

Order

Anything on the menu. Its own words cover the seasonings too, so soy sauce is included.

Watch out

Still new, so hours may change: its site gives lunch 11:30 to 16:00 and dinner 16:00 to 22:00.

05 · Plan your trip

Plan your trip

Where to base yourself

  • Asakusa: Tempura Asakusa SAKURA, Shochikuen Cafe and Otaco are all in Taito ward (chapters 1 and 3).
  • Kanda: Oh Nana! and Gluten-free Izakaya SHION are in Chiyoda ward (chapter 1).
  • Aoyama & Omotesando: L for You, BEYOND SWEETS, RiceHACK and I’m donut? Gluten Free (chapters 1, 2 and 4).
  • Nakameguro, Daikanyama & Ebisu: & OIMO TOKYO CAFE, Miller Cake Store, Premium SOW and Yamano Hitsuji; Jiyugaoka Bakery is further out in Meguro ward (chapters 1, 2 and 3).
  • Elsewhere: NANAN TOKYO and Alchemy in Azabudai, Biossa in Kasuga (Bunkyo), MASHIKAKU in Osaki (Shinagawa), and the second & OIMO TOKYO shop by Yoyogi Park (chapters 2, 3 and 4).

We haven’t checked a Tokyo hotel kitchen ourselves. When you book, ask the hotel about gluten-free breakfast, and pick a room with a fridge: the rice-flour bakeries in chapter 2 make a good stock-up for breakfast.

The one sentence to say

Show it before ordering, every time, dedicated kitchen or not. Coeliac disease in Japanese is セリアック病, and wheat is 小麦 (komugi).

I have coeliac disease, an autoimmune condition, not a diet choice or preference. I can’t eat wheat (including spelt, kamut, durum and semolina), barley, rye or ordinary oats, or anything made with them (bread, pasta, batter, breadcrumbs, flour).

Get the dining card with the follow-up questions →

Two follow-ups that help in Japan. For sauces and broths: 「これに醤油、麦芽、小麦粉、パン粉、固形スープの素は入っていますか?確認していただけますか?」 (“Is there soy sauce, malt, flour, breadcrumbs or stock cubes in this? Could you check?”). For anything fried: 「これは共用のフライヤーや共用の油で揚げましたか?」 (“Was this fried in a shared fryer or shared oil?”)

Good to know

  • Japanese labels flag wheat, not gluten. Wheat (小麦) is one of nine allergens that must be declared on packaged food (Consumer Affairs Agency list, April 2026). Barley (大麦) and rye (ライ麦) are on neither the mandatory nor the recommended list, so look for them, and for malt (麦芽), in the ingredients yourself.
  • Rice-flour bread is not automatically wheat-free. The Consumer Affairs Agency warns that rice-flour products such as 米粉パン can contain gluten or other wheat ingredients, and tells shoppers to ask the staff at in-store bakeries that have no labels.
  • No “may contain” line does not mean no cross-contact. The Agency recommends, but does not require, a warning such as 「本品製造工場では…」 when contamination can’t be ruled out.
  • Soy sauce is the classic trap. Almost all shoyu (醤油) is brewed with wheat, and it goes into tare, tsuyu and marinades. Ask for tamari (たまり), and check that label too: not all tamari is wheat-free.
  • Soba is usually made with wheat too. Most soba noodles are cut with wheat flour; only juwari soba (十割そば, 100% buckwheat) is made without it. Even then, ask whether the noodles are boiled in their own water: many shops cook every noodle in the same pot.
