Are Cheerios gluten-free? Original US Cheerios are labelled so, UK and European ones aren’t

It depends on the country. Two different companies sell cereals called Cheerios, with different recipes.

US Cheerios (General Mills)

  • Original Cheerios in the US are labelled gluten-free; check the box for each flavour. General Mills says it cleans its oats mechanically to remove wheat, barley and rye, then tests the finished cereal.
  • If you prefer oats grown and handled as gluten-free from the field, look for “purity protocol” oats.
  • A small number of people with coeliac disease also react to oats themselves. If oats don’t agree with you, talk to your doctor or dietitian.

UK and European Cheerios (Nestlรฉ)

  • Made from oats, wheat and barley. They are not gluten-free. In Germany they’re sold as Multi Cheerios (oats, wheat, barley, maize, rice); in Italy as Cheerios Miele (oats, wheat, barley).
  • So a box bought in London, Berlin or Milan is a different product from the one in New York.
